Referees coaching players

I remember Phil Gould saying it's ironically the coaches fault that this happens.

At the ref/coach meeting at the start of one year, coaches told the refs to tell them if they are offsides, holding on too long etc. so they wouldn't give a away a penalty.

I think it's a good thing. It's better than watching a game of penalties.

Goes to show that anybody currently coaching in the NRL should no be able to give input into how the game is run. They only want what's best for their team, not the game as a whole.

 Let me guess. Roosters match ? No doubt though your opinions on only one side being coached are completely unbiased.

I said I had only noticed it in one game. It was brought up by the coach after the game and Strerlo and all the guys on the footy show on the Sunday made a point of asking why the referees acted the way they did as they saw it as being unfair.

The commentary team discussed it on the night during the game

It was blatant and thankfully I have not seen it since nor noticed it in any other games. Even ones including the Roosters so I believe it was an anomaly

Yeah it's flippen annoying hearing the refs telling them to get onside, use your foot, stay behind the kicker, etc etc. I would like to think they should just stop talking and start blowing penalties and hope the players would smarten up. However, I think most of the players are too dumb to smarten up to this. I mean it's round 20 and I'm still seeing muppets trying to take quick taps within 10 metres of the try line. If the players can't figure that out, then there isn't much hope for them figuring out the rest of the rules on their own

It's worse when they warn a player about doing something, the player does it anyway and nothing happens.
The first thing they need to do is f**k the refs mic off, it puts unnecessary pressure on them knowing everyone can hear what they are saying.

If the ref's don't then you end up with 40 penalties a game and everyone will love that.

exactly.

Refs coach players - makes players look amateur
Alternative
Refs blow 60 penalties a game - makes players look amateur.

Here's an idea, hows about players stop trying to bend the rules and start playing in the spirit of the game.

Every club is guilty of this. There are no exceptions.

I'd be less annoyed by it if I didn't have to hear every word they'd say. It is really amateurish but as stated if it wasn't there the game would look more like yawnion.

There has to be some happy medium though

Why the F##K should a ref have to tell a player to "Stay OUT,or You're OFF".
They learn that in under 7s .
These are grown men ,who if they cant stay onside should spend time in the Reggies till they grasp the concept.

Most of the problems could be cleared up easily(it would be a painful few weeks with a penaltyathon in nearly every game but it would be worth it .

As for the wrestling etc..simple.
Yell tackled & give the tackler 2-3 seconds to get off ..if not a penalty.

& if they don't take notice 5 in the bin.

Explain the rules & how they will be governed at the beginning of the season & enforce them.

Go watch an under 12 game ,..1 ref ,,free flowing ,no wrestling.
Why does it have to be so hard at top level.

Oh the coach had a whine in the presser. I guess Roosters really were hard done by.

When different TV pundits question something, you kind of realise there might be a little bit more to it.

As I said, it only happened once. I generally feel the refs strike a decent balance between letting the game flow and pinging repeat offenders overall.

Agreed , although I think you would see a fair few massive score lines a s most teams cant defend a repeat set .. better than hearing moooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooovvee every effing tackle

Case in point: Manly get penalised after ref claims they weren't square for three consecutive tackles. Maybe if they were penalised the first tackle they weren't square they would have been square for the next two?

LET THE REFS REFEREE THE RULES!!

This whole "if we penalise it they won't do it anymore" doesn't really work since we still have 20 odd penalties a game. "The players will learn to do it, they learn it as 6 year olds", well why do we still have 4 or 5 penalties for being inside the 10 every game.

It's ridiculous and irritating to watch. When it gets to the point refs telling players how to form a scrum. Come on ffs

Or 'Time your run' on kick offs

one of my favourites - "play it with your foot" and another one, when refs tell players to get onside before one of their team mates kicks for touch - it happens more in the NRL than it does in under 10's.

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but it seems a reflection of society where a certain age group can't be criticised because that damages them. It's this silly approach that causes problems for them, as they don't know how to handle a situation when they make a mistake. Of course they can't be criticised.

Seriously guys, toughen up & smarten up - learn the rules without being spoon fed by gutless officials. They are only doing this under instruction from the NRL - it's pathetic ! The excuse is that this approach builds a relationship between players & officials, that's just too much politically correct garbage from people who don't know the game.

People blow up now when they don't tap it with their foot and are told to go back and do it again, imagine how much they will blow up when the opposition gets a scrum 20m out.

A simple "tap it with your foot" or "wait till they are behind you" lets the game flow a lot smoother without the need for endless errors. "But players will learn pretty quick", yeh that's why we still give away 10m penalties every game.

I'd love to see this place explode if a ref decided to award a scrum 20m out because the player 'tapping' it didn't release the ball.

Can't stand it. What other sport has that? Referees coaching players instead of just applying the friggen rules. Completely ridiculous. And miking up the refs so we have to hear it!! It makes footy almost unwatchable for me these days.

They need to just get back to basics with refereeing. Go back to one ref, take the friggen microphones off em, stop the coaching and accept that you can never get a perfect game. And realise that in the process of trying to get a perfect game you just end up with an over refereed frustrating inconsistent mess of a game which is what we have now.

Anyone see the penalty against... uhh either Mannah or Fui in the first half? Can't remember which one it was, but the ref is like 1m away yelling and gesturing at him to get up, and the player is looking straight at him. Doesn't get up, gets penalised. Might need some extra tutoring, how dumb can you get?

Is there another code in the world where the referees actively coach the players throughout the entire game?

Union refs coach front rowers only. Every other player just has to get on with it.

League refs seem to want to coach everyone, but they do it randomly.

Seems it's just the rugby codes though.

Can't recall it ever in NFL. Never seen it in soccer.

I can't even imagine it happening in cricket.
