ok, what about christians in other clubs?? who are they.

Joe Gulaveou (fuggin spelling!! sorry) he is a dedicated christian - Panthers won a premiership with him in the side and there are a few more at penrith. 2003 was there year.

i'm sure there are heaps more in the NRL.

interesting thread youve started Macca.

See the thing is with Christians (any religeon for that matter) some foloow it because they believe it is the right thing to do,they are usually peace loving people whom are quiet and well peacefull
Then there are the Christians who use there belief as an excuse...ie.6 days of the week they can do what ever they like be it right or wrong and then pop off to church on a Sunday and make everything good in there eyes, all sins forgiven.
Now this is My Opinion and take from it what you will,I believe that the Christians in League are of the later example. Not all of course, but most.
Go out on the pizz, play up and play the real mongrel on the field, but have the slate cleaned at the end of each week by a quick prayer or a trip to the local church.
Thats how I see it anyhow.

Well not Simmo. He's teetotal practically. Don't know about the others TBH.

However is the lack of fitting into the footy "norm" another unintentional splitting mechanism?

Of course it is,it's a deadset factor thats for sure.
I know a lot of religious people and have differing opinions of them all .
The bottom line is Religion blinds people to reallity and nothing can xhange that.
Hell! Pray all you like before a game.....TIME WASTING!!!!!!!
But to disagree with a religious person is like arguing with a Log....the wise have no chance!

This argument has been around for 40 years. Catholics getting favouritism, De La Salle getting favouritism. Sure, I guess it has happened on occasions but not all the time. These players that out themselves as Christians publicly show a lot more guts than those who sit at a computer keyboard and anonymously criticise.

I think big Stevo will be sorely missed next year.
Can't see how religion has an affect on the field, maybe helps keep some of the players out of trouble off the field of play.

editing nthcronullalocal's list to the de la players who played more than a handful of games in first grade

not a bad list, can't see the great conspiracy

LOL use the WHOLE list and you can. There are several blokes who were not and were never going to be first grade quality play first grade because they came from the right side of the tracks.

Its a conspirasy by a whole lot of twisted people to load us up with christians, de la players , and aborigine's to keep us from winning a premiership!!!!!!

Thats a tad discriminitive, i dont see how religion is keep any team from winning premierships or games. Christianity is a personal thing and the way you chose to follow that is your choice.Players who are chrisitans are no different to players who aren't, By having christian players in a team wouldnt bring negativity or anything like that.I think it would bring closeness, unity and a positive vibe.

Half of the sharks team are christians i think, this doesnt effect them on the field, by being soft or whatever..
I think just accept who they are and let them play on field the way they are..

I'm gonna prey before bed tonight that we get a win tomorrow. Does that make me religious because if it works then I will do it for the rest of the year.

What has religion got to do with footy? What a person believes in should have no effect on their abilities and talents. Race should not be an issue either.

exactly...however, we have respect what people have got say. thats the point of a forum, isn't it. it comes down to peoples experience with religion/sprituality... some get a good run and others have a bad run.

lets get back to footy

Poor post actually.

As people have indicated one of the "gripes" is this "Hey, I'm a Christian" palava. Yet you say it is a private thing? If it's so private why the need to broadcast it to everyone? Seems every Christian footballer whenever interviewed can't resist letting that slip out. Seems we know many of the Christian footballers but hear bugger all about the Calathumpians. Borders on propoganda actually.

Is the infamous Sharks prayer session private? We all know about it, we all know who leads it, we all know who participates. Private? Hardly.

If half the Sharks team are Christians, saying it effects them on the field or not is conjecture. Like everything else it's subject to opinion and can't be defined. You certainly can't say with certainty it doesn't.

The saddest thing is, if we all agree that Christianity has no bearing on the Sharks softness, they are running out of excuses.

Closeness, unity and a positive vibe huh? Has to be one of the most naive, introspective things ever written here. Unless everyone is on the same path it has just as much potential to be divisive. Probably not, just on the surface of it, but if there are such Christians in the club who are pushing their supposed personal beliefs and values on others it won't bring about unity.

Fact of it is, when you shout it from the rooftops, expect the snipers to take shots. Or, keep it private as you say it should be.

John Hopoate is a mormon. How does his religious beliefs affect his on-field conduct. As for me, I always thought that Jim See was god, along with Jimmy Hendrix, Jimmy Page and Jim Morrison.
