A fact few Roosters fans can forget (and boy do we wish we could) -

imageMain_14_99.jpg

Well Captain Apollo from Paul Vautin's perspective, the feeling is mutual. LOL :sto:

Fatty Vautin reveals he wishes he had seen his playing career out at the Sea Eagles, not the Roosters

PAUL Vautin has one regret when he reflects on his glittering career - not being a one club player.

After making his debut in 1979, he chalked up 204 appearances in maroon and white, with the highlight captaining Manly to the premiership in 1987 at the Sydney Cricket Ground against Canberra.

A stint in the United Kingdom with St Helens worked against him, with the man affectionately known as "Fat" unceremoniously shown the door in at the end of the 1989 campaign.

Vautin signed on with the Tricolours for two winters, eventually retiring in 1991.

"I wouldn't say I disliked my time with the Roosters, but it was very different to Manly,'' he said.

"I felt part of the furniture and was fortunate to play under a great coach in Bozo (Bob Fulton).

"Back in those days the Roosters were struggling, being competitive was the goal. I am in no way bitter, but in hindsight finishing up at Brookvale (Oval) would have been the ultimate way to go out.''

that card was from 1993 when he joined the steelers.. used a photo from the prior year when he was at wests..

a lot of cards back then used to have this occur when a player changed clubs..

It seems Blues fans still have selective memories. I can be selective with freeze-frames too. Unfortunately for you I only need to find one frame.

Heel on line = OUT.

You are aware the debate was whether or not his heel was on the line or slightly elevated... something your standard definition pic cannot determine?!

The 1992/93 Regina years especially.

The old Scanelns of the mid/late 1980's just didn't bother.

Girds rookie card in 1993 at Penrith is him in Steelers colours; same as Dymock in Wests at Dogs and Serdaris in Souths gear for Dogs.

I guess the cards would have been designed in the offseason before any footage or pics of the players in their new teams colours were available?

Correct.

After 1994, most of the time they have had 2 sets. So players who switch miss the first set and are in the second set with their new colours.

Speaking of players like Brett Firman.

How about some other names in recent years who had big reputations but never materialised into anything special?

Like Jermaine Ale from the Canberra Raiders? A young outside back who absolutely terrorised teams in the lower grades but was barely a blip when it came to first grade?

Or PeeWee Moke from the Roosters Jersey Flegg team with the odd name but oodles of talent? Cronulla signed him thinking they had somebody of substance, instead he's just an obscure name that will only come out in threads like this.

Back to Cronulla again and what about Jacob Selmes? The guy had a lot of wraps on him and was expected to be a big part of Cronulla moving forward. Instead the most famous thing Selmes is remembered for is coming to blows with Ben Ross.

Then there's brothers. We're all aware of players like Matt Johns, Kevin Walters & Josh Morris but what about James Aubusson? The young hooker/half had plenty of wraps on him and was expected to be just as good as his younger brother Mitchell. However he seemingly dropped off the map never to be seen or heard from again.

Similar story with Dustin Cooper, the older brother of Gavin who went from club to club.

Finally, South Sydney had plenty of false dawns during the early days of their revival. The likes of Joe Williams, Yileen Gordon and Scott Geddes are well known but what about Damon Alley-Tovio? The young backrow was rated alongside the likes of Beau Champion and John Sutton as players to watch out for and despite stints at the Raiders, Bulldogs, Dragons and Knights he never made a fist of it as a first grader. Unfortunately for Damon, he did make a fist of Dave Gleeson and got himself into a bit of trouble!
PeeWee Moke's rep was built on a dominant Jersey Flegg grand final performance IIRC, I think it was against Cronulla when the Roosters went underfeated, Soward was 5/8. Jermaine Ale was from that same team, played for Canberra and been in Newcastle rugby league ever since

To sync both themes of your post though, I remember seeing souths play once and they had Peter Taylor who was very highly rated out of that roosters Flegg team playing halfback. Got injured and was never seen again. Rated as highly as Soward on junior exploits.

I know Bob Linder received a bit of flack from his time at Parramatta. He replaced the great Ray Price under great expectations, and when the team faltered and never achieved the success it had under Price, he was pointed out alot by the fans for the blame.

It was before my time and so I wouldn't know if it was warranted or not.

No, the debate around here was NSW fans using Craig's photo as evidence he didn't touch the line, selectively ignoring the next frame.

And the Video refs had enough evidence in that frame to determine his heel or at least part of it touched the line.

In todays game, the ref would've awarded that as a try before sending it to the video ref for examination.

From there, the result would've been inconclusive.
