Watching Marty Taupau burst his way to 2 tries last night aided by the awesome use of the lost art of The Fend brought back memories of the Paul Mellor try against the Knights when we towelled them up 64-14 in about 2003.

He Fended off Quinn 2 or 3 times on his way to a long range try - awesome to watch.

Players don't tend to use The Fend anymore when in the open & a defender is about to grab them - they just try & use power &/or speed to evade them. Nothing better than a good "don't argue" push in the chest to sit 'em on their arse.

Mullins used a fend in 2002 grand final to keep opposition winger away, then passed to Shannon Hegarty to score the first try

I remember Steve renouf used the fend brilliantly and would actually use It to push off and have as a burst of speed away and past the defender

I remember that try. My school chums and I called him the terminator.

I completely forgot that Gillmeister played for the Roosters

For some reason I also had no idea that Michael Searle actually played the game

I knew Jim Dymock played for the Bulldogs and Eels, but not the Magpies

They had the most exciting backline the game has probably ever seen.

Yep - Sterling, Kenny, Ella, Cronin, Grothe et al... only one comparable that I've seen was the Stuart, Daley, Meninga, Mullins, Nadruku et al Canberra groups

Underrated Jeremy Schloss playing for North Queensland, he also represented Queensland in the state of origin in 1997, but I can't find a picture.

Tony Iro probably best remembered for his playing days with Manly, had a short stint with the Hunter Mariners.
