Cameron Smith debuted at haflback

matt orford went down early that season, and they tried filling in with marty turner before smith debuted and lost his first, won his second (last game that season) and was then replaced by matt geyer at halfback the following week

Remember the old pig-skin balls? Hell remember when they used to kick off with a pile of sand opposed to the tee? I wonder if they'll still be allowed to do that nowadays. Freaking soft pussies!

Does anyone remember when a team (Manly I think) used sand or a kicking tee to kick for touch when they got a penalty? I think it might have been a preseason comp in the late 90's.

I don't have enough info to search for some footage.

It wasn't Manly but a Jack Gibson coached team. Can't recall which one though.:?

Yes, and while on that era, do you remember the 'magic sponge'? Remember injured players getting blood, sweat and dirt wiped from their brow, then a team mate comes along and grabs said sponge, loads it up with contaminated water and sucks on it to quench his thirst? And remember not thinking that was remotely disgusting or hazardous at the time?

The first time I can recall seeing someone place kick for touch was during the late 80's. It was Ross Conlon at Parra Stadium while playing for the Tigers (Warren Ryan was Tigers coach at the time). I remember it vividly, I was a season ticker holder with my old man in those days. Conlon in those days was renowned as being able to kick the ball the furthest from a place kick. He had kicked a few 45+metre penalty goals to that point, which was virtually unheard of back then

So there we were at Parra Stadium and the Tigers got a penalty on about their own 30 metre line and Conlon steps up and grabs the ball, calls the ball boy over and asks for the sand bucket and proceeds to place the ball on the sand mound to kick it.... And everyone in the crowd is like "WTF? There's no way he can kick a penalty goal that far!! He's dreaming".... And then he kicks it over the sideline for a gain of about 20 metres.... And everyone is still "WTF was all that about?"

I think he did for a few games, not many, before they realised it was pretty pointless and a waste of time more than anything...

I remember doing the same thing when I played junior league... We'd share that massive car wash sponge around and load it up with water and go to town drinking it.... Think I know why all my hair fell out in 6th grade now that you mention it!!

I can't say I remember that, although I do recall the staple gun that was used at one stage as a quick-fix instead of bandaging a players cut...

So very true. You are a wise one Craig Johnson.

Back on Topic though. I remember when Noel Goldthorpe kicked a field goal in the Super League Tri Series in the 101st minute to win the game. Was then rested on the following weekend with Brett Kimmorley taking his place. That was Goldthorpe's career pinnacle

As shit as Super League was, that's a pretty nice piece of silverware. I wonder where it is nowadays. I doubt it's in the NSW Leagues Club!

Had a colleague visiting from New York and he started to get into rugby league. The above turned him into a committed fan after that. Shame they took it away from the side lines.
