Broncos boss angry over attack
Laine Clark | September 12, 2007 - 4:55PM

Broncos boss Bruno Cullen has revealed how close he came to an incident in which Seven Network reporter Ben Davis was assaulted during a live cross outside Melbourne's Olympic Park.

The Brisbane chief executive has also urged Melbourne to ban the offenders from home games if they are found to be Storm supporters after three men were arrested by Victorian police yesterday.

Cullen said he walked out of the ground following Brisbane's 40-0 qualifying final loss on Sunday night to get a lift into the city from the Seven Network, only to find a flustered Davis.

"Ben came along and I said 'what's wrong with you' and he said 'I've just got stitched up'," Cullen said.

"He virtually went from that (assault) to me. I was with Ben within five minutes of it happening.

"His face was flushed, he had mud on his shoes. He told me all about it on the way back into town."

Victorian police expect to charge at least two men over the assault in which Davis was tackled to the ground as he crossed to Seven's Brisbane studio during Sunday's evening news.

Davis suffered an injured wrist in the attack, which was captured by Seven's cameras.

One of the offenders could be seen in the Seven footage wearing a Broncos jersey but Cullen doubted whether he was a Brisbane supporter.

"Sceptics have told me when people do things like that they put the opposition's jumper on to give them a bagging - now I am not suggesting that is the case but it is disappointing (it happened)," he said.

"I wouldn't have thought he was a Broncos supporter as such - it might be someone from Melbourne who bought a jumper and went along.

"But no matter what jersey he was wearing, it was sad to see it happen, a disgraceful episode."

A Victorian police spokesman said three men were arrested and interviewed by Melbourne Criminal Investigation Unit detectives yesterday and later released.

Two of the men, a 28-year-old from Docklands and a 25-year-old from Preston, were expected to be charged on summons with one count each of unlawful assault.

The third man, 23, also of Preston, was released pending further inquiries.

Cullen urged Melbourne to ban the offenders from Storm home games if "they know them".

"I hope they cop the correct punishment from the law and I encourage Melbourne Storm to do something about it if they are regulars and they know them or they are season ticket holders," he said.

Davis will cover the North Queensland Cowboys' semi-final against the New Zealand Warriors at Townsville on Sunday.

The Seven Network will hire guards to accompany him amid fears of a copycat incident.

If you watch the unedited version and not just the 30 second grab on youtube you'll clearly see that there's also another bloke in a maroons jersey along with the idiot in the Bronc's jersey as well.

So yes Bruno, one bloke specifically went out and brought a Bronco's jersey before the game in the hope there'd be a reporter doing a live cross after the game so he could attack him on air. Never mind that the f**king idiot put his ugly mug on the tv for all to see knowing very well he'd be filmed, but he went out and brought a $150 jersey just so people think he was a Bronco supporter :sarcasm:

Not to mention the other purchasing a Maroons jersey as well which are as rare as hens teeth and near on in impossible to get in Melbourne if at all. Or maybe he got it sent from interstate just for this sole purpose. These blokes obviously put alot of planning into attacking a reporter that they didn't even know was going to be there aye Bruno?

Regardless of them being bronco's fans that's not even the issue. If they were Storm fans i'd be saying exactly the same thing, identify who they are, throw the book at the gutless pricks and ban them for life from going to another game of rugby league.
Bruno is an idiot, why can't he admit there were a few drunken dickhead broncos fans?

And to further your argument, it looks like the jersey with the Ansett sponsorship on the sleeve! That means that this attack has been 7 years in the making! the plot thickens...

Thats the 01 away jersey. Interesting response from Bruno.

Preston & Docklands are suburbs of Melbourne so these guys are victorians. Who cares what team they support just give them a kick up the arse / assault charge like you would if any supporter did it.

And still no re-entering of the thread by bigdogsgottaeat, kia ora storm, Dani and all the other arrogant Storm f***tards blowing up about "Dirty Queenslanders" and "Brisbane scum".

one would assume, with the history of wonderful underground violence in that "cultured" city of Melbourne that they would be the last to throw stones.

Nevertheless, makes it interesting when they're proven to be dead wrong, never to be seen again.

Please point out exactly where i said the words "Dirty Queenslanders" or "Brisbane scum".

If this person was a Storm supporter i'd think about never going to a game again. It's a disgrace. The fact is, the guy was in a Broncos jersey, which is damning.

When Tonearm Terrorwrist stated something of the lines of, "Can't expect much more from a Victorian", you replied with:

Dani said:
Um, it was a Broncos supporter.

You didn't use the word "scum" or anything, but you refuted the fact that this animal could've been from Melbourne.

Capiche?

Melbourne's full of AFL fans, can't expect much more from us.

And next time, please don't accuse me of things which i have never/would never say.

Well, basically, you are one of numerous people who came in here stating quite simply that the tosser involved was obviously from our neck of the woods.

I'm ashamed enough that the idiot was wearing one of our jerseys, but it pisses me off further when that goes down - I just hope he stays out of Brisbane and away from Suncorp in the future or he'll get a pretty nasty surprise from a few of us.

I hope that he stays away from anything to do with Rugby League in general just as much as you do mate.

Honestly, i was just correcting the guys mistake in that first post. There was no malice intended.

I know, and I do know ya better than that by now. I just hate these scummy bogans that do this crap year-in, year-out. Grrrr.

I'd honestly sit through 40-point towellings every week for five years if it meant no off-field incidents in RL for a season.

don't see that sort of crap happening outside suncorp.

Ever been to the Caxton, and to a lesser extent the Paddo after a game ?

Didn't think so

Disgusting. Not saying it's as bad as the attack on the reporter; but still.
