Martin maybe is a bit on the soft side and yes he is a grown man. But so what. Like everyone, regardless of age he has feelings. People can only take so much thrown at them before they say enough is enough.

Martin could have responded in a worse way then just walking away from the team. Then where would have been Martin, Incognito, the Dolphins and the NFL have been then.

As for Incognito well he has some prior form.

Its incredible how some people are accepting of what is often said, just because its on the sporting field.

Winning is what pro sports is all about, because it brings in the money. Teams will accept just about anyone regardless of what type of person he is.

It'll be interesting to see if Martin picks up a contract after this. I know the media are on his side, and all the civil liberty mothering types will love him as well - but what NFL team will want him now? How can a team know where Martin's mind draws the line on what is considered inappropriate?

I wouldn't be surprised if it's a risk most teams aren't interested in taking.

Basically sums up my feelings all along. Martin has blown this way out of proportion.

Interesting to note that the article sums up exactly what I mentioned yesterday:

In going to the media with his problem, Martin broke the code, and it shows that he’s not there for his teammates and he’s not standing up for himself. There might be a team that gives him a chance because he’s a good person, but the players will reject him. They’ll think, If I say one thing he’s going to the press. Why should Martin be sacked? As far as I can see he has done nothing wrong.

Maybe Martin is not mentally strong enough to play the game. Maybe he is an introvert. Maybe he is a whole bunch of things. But that soent mean he should be subjected to the crap he received.

If Martins teammates had a problem with him they could have gone to their coaches.

As foe Incognito, well it's not as though he doesn't have some prior form

the hazing thing is so outdated and absurd... you want these guys coming in and feeling apart of it and ready to produce, not dreading to walk into the team facilities

Its one thing to make a rook pay for a meal, or supply snacks for the meetings, or carry some gear early doors, pay their dues but when it crosses the line at this level, it simply cant be acceptable.

And what does it say about the NFL when Jonathan Martin is the bad guy in this? The guy gets harassment to the point of leaving by some peanut with a history of bullying, and Martin is the problem, not Incognito? Martin is the soft one? Because he finally had enough of pack mentality making his life a living hell?

This will change the landscape of the NFL. I cant see how this sort of thing is allowed to continue, and im pleased to know Andy Reid stomped it out in Philly years ago and Chip has carried it on.

I can understand where you guys are coming from, but let me give you an example of why things like hazing (when done correctly) can be a very important thing in sport.

Every single rookie that comes into the NFL would come in with a cocky attitude after being the big fish in the little pond throughout college. They were treated as God's and got used to getting away with being the big man on campus. Putting a kid in his place (ie, you're now just a small fish in a big, big ocean) can actually do wonders for both the rookie as an athlete, and the team as a unit. I'll give you an example (and I know this is a movie that is completely fictional, but if you think it doesn't apply to real life you're kidding yourself):

In the movie Any Given Sunday we see Willie Beaman come in as the rookie who doesn't care what people think and is given the run of the team because he knows there is no one else. He get's incredibly arrogant and starts bagging off his teammates because he hasn't learnt what team sports are all about. He's in it for himself and he's never had to experience it any other way.

Now, I know that's fictional, but let me now turn it into a real life example - my beloved and sh*tty Canberra Raiders. If senior players had of taken Todd Carney or Josh Dugan aside and treated them like shit, they would have learnt respect. They would have learnt that you have to earn the right to be arrogant. They probably would have even learnt about team culture and his place in the organisation. Instead, they were treated like God's before they achieved anything. They became absolute f*ckwits and tore the team apart.

I agree that some things are inappropriate, but I don't agree with people who think hazing is a bad thing because it's bullying or emotional harassment. And I certainly don't think the way Martin has handled this has helped anyone.

Paully do you really think having people calling Carney a deadshit alcoholic f**kface or something to similar effect down the phone would have taught him about 'team culture'? I can't see how anything this Incognito fella has done would have instilled any kind of 'team culture' in Martin or taught him any kind of respect.

'Hazing' is probably always going to be around, but if this is hazing then jeez they need to pick up their game.
