MEDIA RELEASE from the Parramatta Eels
The Parramatta National Rugby League Club has been deeply saddened by the passing of Club founder Colonel Jack Argent, OBE, OAM, ED. Colonel Argent was 99.
Colonel Argent was the founder of the Parramatta District Rugby League Club, and the man responsible for the Clubs entry into the NSWRL competition in 1947. In fact, as early as 1935, Colonel Argent was lobbying the NSWRL to include the Parramatta Club into the competition.
To this very day, the Parramatta Leagues Club is still referred to as The House that Jack built, as his company carried out the construction of the building that opened in 1959. No-one has made a greater contribution to this Club and it is a very sad day for everyone associated with it, Parramatta Eels Chief Executive Denis Fitzgerald said.
Colonel Argent was a great worker for the Parramatta community over a number of decades. He was patron of the local Referees Association and of the Parramatta Eels Supporters Club. He helped a number of local charities who will miss him a great deal, Parramatta Leagues Club Chairman Alan Overton AM said.
National Rugby League Chief Executive David Gallop joined those paying tribute to Colonel Argents contribution to the game.
It is a sad day for all of us in the Rugby League community. He made a tremendous contribution to the Parramatta Club and was one of the real characters of our game. On behalf of everyone in the game I wish to pass on my condolences to his family, Mr Gallop said.
Australian and NSWRL Chief Executive Geoff Carr said Colonel Argent was a tireless worker for Rugby League.
He was a great servant of the game for many, many years. He was a Delegate to the New South Wales Rugby League from 1947 and held a variety of important positions, including that of Manager of the 1959 Kangaroos. He will be sadly missed, Mr Carr added.
Parramatta Eels players will wear black armbands during their match against the New Zealand Warriors at Parramatta Stadium on Saturday night (August 21), and a moments silence will be observed prior to kick-off.

As a fan of the Eels for over a quarter of a century, I want to thank Jack for what he did to get this great club of ours off the ground.
Condolences to all involved in Jacks' life.
