Wow. What awful news.

One of my favourite players growing up. He always had a crack and gave his all on the footy field.

RIP Lance Thompson, condolences to your friends and family.

The sort of bloke that every team loves to have, tough as nails and always giving his 100%, you could tell how much he loved playing league.

Left a lot of fans a lot of good memories... RIP Thommo

I was a groomsmen at a wedding a couple years back at Woolooware Golf Club where his restaurant is and he catered it. He was lovely to deal with.

He talks of his debut game at 17 years old, taking his first hit up against grown men the likes Les Davidson and Danny Lee.

I know what I was doing at 17 and it was not that. The thought of running into those blokes just sums up the big fella.

Tough, no frills footballer.

The restraint he showed in celebrating when he scored that try for Sharks in his first game for them against Saints also speaks volumes of his character.

A really sad day.

That is horrible news to wake up to, as everyone else has said he was a very likeable player, even playing for the opposition team you couldn’t help but like him. 40 is way to young to go.

I am no fan of the Dragons, but I always liked Lance. He was just that kinda guy. He put in his all and you always wished him the best.

I remember him scoring against the Dragons as a Shark and not wanting to celebrate. It spoke volumes about the character of the man.

RIP Lance. If there's an Rugby League afterlife competition, you'll be picked for sure
