What makes you think the international game, or anything outside the interests of the clubs, is the concern of this proposed commission.

The role is simple - 2 steps.

1. Allow News Ltd to get out of it's current commitment.
2. Make the clubs/owners money.

Surprise!
SOO is outside the interests of the clubs, tests are ,so is the All Stars concept. They all make money for the code via TV rights, which is part of the money pool for clubs and players.

At last reports the I.C, will be involved in the Tv rights decision making.
QED representative football has some impact. They ignore at their peril.

The commission is involved in the structuring of the code,to ensure the long term success.Else your clubs, owners, grassroots would get b...all.
Simple really.

So simple.

If any element is ever reduced to the 'must make money for the code as a whole' then a lot of things just will not happen.

How long until all not-profitable non-NRL footy is separated from the 'business' side of things. Look to the NSWRU for an example of running the pro side of things separate from the 'community' part of the game.

You might like to think that "The commission is involved in the structuring of the code,to ensure the long term success". But the failed superleague and soon to fail NRL admin models suggest otherwise.

The whole IC suggestion is a quick fix to enable a stakeholder to dodge their responsibilities under the current deal. The sport has become a TV product first, with everything else a distant second or gone altogether.

This current proposal suggests doing away with any not-for-tv element of the game. No more state leagues with any say, no more CRL. Simply axe any area that does not directly line the pocket of the club owners or News Ltd.

And some people think this is "long-term thinking".

If you are going to model the i.C on the last SL experiment, forget it.SL was hardly wanted by the fans.It was a damn intrusion.News had NFI about running a sport or experience in it,and it cost them and the game plenty.
News ltd did not come up with the I.C set up.It was conceived by Searle about 3 years ago.Hardly a last minute production.
The sport has indeed become a TV product, and without the Tv money,we all would be stuffed.
Well judging by the waste and duplication involving the state leagues,a good idea.Who says the country areas and state league will be rejected.
A quick fix! instead of the inefficient, confusing decisions which the current admin comes up with at times.

Please don't try and compare it with union. They have b...al money available for grassroots and pay the CEO overs IMO.The S15 game is not on FTA,and the Shyte shield is on the ABC.

Yeah I am sure the I.C. is going to axe country rl and qld country rl comps.Chop the very base on which the clubs depend.Geez I have read some beauties.
i can see the likes of Pearce and Grant telling the rest of the commission to get rid these unprofitable rl areas' comps.
And you believe the current regime, was into long term planning.there was no 5 year plan for starters.
You appear to be working on the basis ,that just about every dollar will go to the clubs. Then why have all other rls under the one roof at moore park, for good times sake!
Do you understand,we have a competitor with lots of cabbage invading our land. You fight the intruders with financially supporting and not neglecting the grassroots.
You are crossing the bridge ,before the cavalry has arrived.

can somebody more knowledgable than I, please tell me why the QRL would agree to be one of the 18 members

surely it opens the way for all the Sydney clubs and the NSWRL to ban together and push decisions out of self interest through

granted, one would hope there is never an instance of looking after a region or any of the old Qld vs NSW crap that used to go on during the Quayle/Arko reign

but the QRL seem to have stood up for their rights during this process, until this

no, i can't think of any example, but it does concern me

the 3 commissioners listed above look outstanding, especially Pemberton, and then there is Pearce  ... lets hope they have 4 more gems lined up

Oink !

The game was booming ahead under the NSWRL. The comp was in better shape than it is now.

This IC is simply a continuation of the current NRL structure. News Ltd get to be one step further removed than they are now. But they still maintain influence through crippling future TV rights negotiations and via clauses that demand funding for their team in Melbourne.

It is a farce that no-one should fall for.

And like it or not, the ARU structure is relevant. The pro level / local level / international responsibilities all provide good comparison points for rugby league.

Look at what has happened to some rugby internationals where local professional competitions overlap. It is an issue where commercial interests of local owners conflict with the sporting demands of rep footy.

Maybe the QRL is surprisingly seeing sense for a change? This is our comp, you're here at our invitation. Most clubs are NSW clubs, it only makes sense that we come first.

Do you think the party that wins less seats in government gets to run the show? No. Same thing here.

The quicker you people understand that the better. You are not the home of rugby league. You are not rugby league heartland. You play in our comp at our invitation. It's in everyones best interest for people to know their place.

bahahahaha!!! your comp indeed. I don't wanna open up old wounds but as far as I can see this comp is pretty much Super League with a few extra Sydney comps thrown in. The game is being shown on Fox, a New$ bloke is the CEO, a few of the SL rules crept their way into the NRL with the video refs and zero tackle. Kid yourself as much as you want.........

Look which way the tide is turning. The IC will be controlled by the NSWRL which is controlled by the NSW clubs.

News and it's mates in Queensland are desperately trying to turn the tide but it won't happen. It's done. The future of RL will be controlled from Sydney, as it should be.

The News vision was 3-4 Sydney teams. There's 9, and after the next tv deal none of them will need to go anywhere. They tried to move the epicentre of rl from Sydney, they failed.

Nice work this is the sort of talk that brought on SL.....

So your arguing that QLD is not rugby league heartland?????

Welll actually it is not a continuation, with all the rls under the one roof, and the savings on duplication.
The game was booming in 1994/5,until SL stepped in.We cant change the past.It was going downhill prior to the Quayle/Arko admin.

And what do you suggest in place of the curent NRL structure.Bring back Illawarra,Newtown,Wests, rely heavily on poker machine revenue, reamin in NSW,and get flogged by fumbleball.

The step that News Ltd takes,is a fairly big one.Like losing 50% ownership !!
Who knows exactly what the next Tv rights will secure,I don't know and neither I assume do you.News are not at the other side of the table negotiating with themselves. The final negotiations will be left to the I.C/Lek/Gallop.They have historical figures to work on,to suggest they were ripped off last time.

I have no problem with Storm receiving funding for the next few years. The second biggest city deserves an NRL team.

The only farce would be if the code reverted back to just NSW and Qld.We may as well shut up shop.Neanderthal thinking in a highly competitive world.

RU in this country is not a good comparison. They have a privately owned club the Rebels, the rest are supposedly self sufficient. They have a program for S15,local clubs and internationals. The S15 season is shorter, some S15 players end up having a guest stint in the club comp, and the internationals do not interfere with the S15.
The NRL has a bigger mix ,a long NRL season,All stars,SOO and finals series.,then the odd test.
I don't know of any privately owned club(like Manly or the Storm) trying to prevent a healthy player from playing SOO or tests or All stars. The complaints have been about the workloads.
I detect a deep hatred for News and SL.Like me you have to get over it,instead of continually dwelling on the past, and doomsdaying all the time.

BunniesMan would love the comp to go back to being a Sydney comp. Maybe then he could revisit souths glory years of the 1920s...

And what do you suggest in place of the curent NRL structure

Wait. Honor the current peace deal.

All the ARL has to do is wait. When the current agreement ends News can go, no strings attached.

If all of the other clubs, and country clubs, and juniors want to see millions siphoned off to fund a Melbourne experiment they can still do it.

If the administration want to negotiate media deals and then ring up News Ltd and ask "Is this OK with you?" they can still do it.

If the administration would like to ask News Ltd to appoint board members or have the final say on senior staff appointments they can still do it.

And if they don't want to do these things, then they don't have to.

So we continue to get screwed TV contract wise, whilst News is still part of the NRL ownership.
I take it you are not keen on Melbourne being in the comp.It currently is not money being syphoned off for melbourne.News gets $8m as part of their share of profits.they use part of that to fund the club and part for junior development. The rest of the junior development monies is provide by the ARL(DOs). and the Vic govt.
And News Ltd will say"How good is this,we can again negotiate with ourselves on both sides of the table. We can minimise the cost, and the NRL will still think they got a good deal".
News Ltd are already involved with some of the commissioner appointments as are the QRL and the NSWRL and the ARL.It wouldn't matter if Luigi the unbelievable was one of the appointees, there would be people whinging.
Part of the reason it has taken so laong ,is bodies like the QRL and no doubt the NSWRL want to ensure the country and grassroots are not neglected.
I put it to you,if the last TV deal had achieved its real value,we wouldn't be arguing, about lack of moniesto grassroots .Even an extra $20-30m pa would have been welcome.
We were done over lkast time, and I want an I.C. with some intestinal fortitiude to get proper value thsi time.
1) To support the grassroots
2) To give decent grants to clubs,to rreatin star players
3) To stick it up the fumbleball brigade.
4) To expand and thereby secure higher sponsorship value.
That has been the problem with rugby league too long, waiting and lacking a vision. They have been reactionary rather than actionary.

The deal expires with no strings attached. The IC is crippled due to these strings that extend beyond the current terms.

I don't care if Melbourne is in this comp or not - but either way it should be on exactly the same terms as every other team. Under the IC deal this is not the case.

The current cash siphon via news ltd stinks. But that is what the current agreement allows. This mistake should not be repeated.

The wait is too long , to just leave the original agreement to expire. In the meantime you would have News still involved who do little for the code re promotion. You have competitors one in particular cashed up ,throwing money around, and we think everything in the regional and country areas will be rosy:crazy:.
The only way the I.C is crippled is due to the current Tv deal for the 2012 period.beyond then if they play their cards right, the game should have money to finance club grants, grassroots development and admin costs.
if they can't do it,then the game is in deep trouble.
Any code worth its salt, provides money and resources into new areas. If that is considered a mistake, then let us get back to being a sydney based comp, and have players earning max $100,000 Pa.:roll:plus the other codes creaming our best.

It is all wishful thinking taipan.

It may the case that none of what you expect will occur at all.

How far can we be from deciding if elements stay or go based on their ability to stand alone - to be self financing? How can you be so sure this will not be the outcome, and not the model that you have invented?

You are relying on terms like "any code worth it's salt".

That is just not good enough.

Right now, this IC proposal seems nothing more than an exit strategy for News Ltd. Anything else is conjecture.

Parra It is no different, than the assumptions you are making, with no I.C in place,News still involved and a new Tv contract yet to be finalised.

We live in a country with 22m people, with 4 major football codes. My point is simply to make money, you have to spend it.If that means in expasnion areas ,so be it.
The exit strategy Icontinue to offer, was made by Searle as the architect of the I.C ,not News Ltd.If the purpose was just to get News out it succeeded, but the other purpose was to get some form of independence in Tv negotiations,as News has no expertise in running a code.
The only thing News is concerned about ATM IMO is what the Pay Tv lie of the land be like ,under the new I.C.
I am not relying on anything.I simply want News out,a decent Tv deal and money flowing to the respective bodies and the game to grow.
This has not happened since 1995.
