News could just set up 12 brand new clubs like they did with Hunter, Adelaide and Perth. They have the readies.

No one in NSW or QLD would support a new club in a new comp. The Hunter Mariners were one of the most hated sporting franchises of all time in Australian sport. And Perth werent set up by News.

Yes but as I've said before, if the NRL drags its heels on expansion, how many of those bids might be inclined to go to SL MkII? And when that happens, how many current NRL teams might be inclined to swap over?

The idea of getting clubs to sign a mutual agreement is a good one - but where there's a will there's a way. For example: what's to stop News Limited from signing up 10 franchises and calling it 'Hybrid Rugby' etc instead of Rugby League and manufacturing a new version of the game? Is that a non-compete?

Really News Limited wants this to just apply pressure down the track (i.e. if you don't give us the rights we will threaten your existence again). They'd also be concern about what would happen if the IC itself were to dissolve into rival comps (could they broadcast it?)

The NRL needs to learn from the mistakes of the past - not repeat them. Number One is getting rid of the conflicting influence of a media company who seeks to maximise profits from our sport whilst aiming to fund it with the smallest expenditure it can get away with.

I find it very unlikely that News would ever be successful in starting , or even wanting to try to start, a breakaway comp.

They struggled to get a 10 team comp in the super league war, and that was only because they invented 2 teams in the Mariners and the Rams. I cannot see them getting 12 or 16 teams this time, especially when they have shown the clubs and state bodies repeatedly that they are only concerned about themselves.

And if News are ever in such a dire situation to actually consider a breakaway comp, it would mean that the ARL Commission are getting their broadcast revenue elsewhere and that the NRL comp would be in great shape, so why would a NRL team leave?

I still have ever even heard of a Hunter Mariners fan.

Why don't all the NSW clubs sign an agreement not to join a rival comp for say 20+ years. No New South Wales, no rival comp.

Why would they want to do that ?

It's not causing trouble & being against the "establishment", but looking after the best interests of the clubs & players.

As stated on other threads related to this topic, who knows what direction the NRL will have taken by the end of 2017 ? With another tv deal up for grabs, they'd be silly to commit to anything longer than 5 years - clubs & players wouldn't want to lose any leverage in CBA or other issues such as scheduling. No-one can say for sure how many teams will be in the comp then ( in 2017 ) - expansion, relocation & also teams merging or going broke are all factors in that.

News Limited are simply retaining their commercial options, which is what their shareholders would expect them to do. The only way to stop them, would be to pay them to agree to a perpetual non-compete clause. That would cost a motzah, of course, so it won't happen.

My betting would be on some kind of hybrid code competition in five years time.

What between a rebel comp between Union and League ?.

I'm not sure if Pearce is the right choice.

I'm guessing he might be pro-bears due to the smile by RBB?
