What a joke. "He's done a good job considering what's been thrown at him". He didn't mention that it was News Ltd doing the throwing!

"It has been reported that News has offered to sign a non-compete clause for five years as a way of resolving the impasse and the clubs have baulked at signing a members' agreement to play in next year's competition until the media company complies with their request."

Is it conceivable that the clubs could play hard ball over this? What's to stop the clubs forming their own comp without News Ltd at all, under the management of a group of businessmen that we could call something like " an Independant Commission"?

You are now questioning the independence of the Chairman of the Australian Rugby League Independent Commission?

Don't put words into my mouth fool.

As if Grant would come in and straight away say Gallop is hopeless.

The Commission isn't even officially up and running yet.

Let's see how it all plays out when they've had to work together for a year or so.

As a mad leaguie, I hope it all runs smoothly.

NRL clubs appoint negotiating group

David Beniuk AAP Wed, Sep 21, 2011 - 8:08 PM

Restless NRL clubs will appoint a representative group of chairmen and chief executives to negotiate their licensing agreement with the league.

All 16 clubs were represented at a meeting in Sydney on Wednesday, when a decision was taken to form the committee in an attempt to have agreements finalised by November 1.

The clubs want to ensure the contracts adequately cater for future revenue expected to be earned by a new broadcast rights deal the NRL hopes can earn up to $1.4 billion.

They are reportedly also frustrated at the progress of negotiations for the new rights and delays in the start-up of rugby league's independent commission.

"The clubs met to discuss the suite of contractual documents they need to sign between now and the fist of November (when the new season officially begins)," clubs spokesman David Trodden told AAP.

"All 16 clubs were represented at the meeting and all of the clubs overwhelmingly have a desire to make sure that the commission is in place by the first of November, and they're overwhelmingly supportive of the commissioners who've been appointed as well.

"They recognise that the contractual documents that they need to sign are important documents that have to be properly reviewed.

"What the clubs decided today was to appoint a representative group of chairmen and CEOs who would meet with the relevant constituent bodies for that review process to take place straight away, with a view to having everything in place by the first of November."

It is understood the license agreements, with which the clubs agree to be part of the NRL, were distributed last week and the group is hoping to begin negotiations within the next fortnight.

Wonder what the motivation is for the clubs to be getting their agreement pushed through before the IC comes into play? Makes you wonder if they are worried the pie is going to get sliced thinner for them so that grass roots, jnr RL, marketing etc actually get properly funded?

Gallop seems very keen to get on the clubs good side prior to the IC forming so I fear a bad deal for RL, a good deal for clubs will be the outcome if this doesn't get delayed until after the IC takes charge.

This is something that Steve Mascord has been very vocal about, especially the international game.

Surely marketing, etc, should be important to the clubs, as should expanding the player base etc.

Starting to get a bit jumpy over here about what's going on.

Hmm. Nothing in the article really suggests that they are considering a break away. It pretty much just said that the clubs want to own their property rights, they want the IC up and running and will probably sign a one year licencing agreement along with the RLPA.

Taking back the property rights would be a crucial change in the balance of power. Without those any breakaway clubs would have to rebrand. And the NRL could just replace any club that left with a new franchise with the name and logo that fans already support. But if the clubs own the properties then they can depart leaving the NRL to try and replace them with new brands. This would be the change that made a future breakaway truly possible. The league should be very careful what they concede here.

Agreed...

The league have learnt the lessons of Super League, and the fact that the Brisbane Broncos and Canterbury Bulldogs and other traitorous clubs from the past currently cant defect with brands and logos is comforting to me....

A breakaway league having to start with all new teams from scratch and no existing fans would have buckleys chance of success...

As I have mentioned before, it would be like trying to start a new competition with 10 Hunter Mariners...

The only reason I can see the Clubs arguing in favour of this is to have the option of screwing over the governing body in the future by jumping ship to a rival league...

I doubt there is another major sporting competition anywhere that would allow existing teams to be able to jump across to a rival competiton...

I doubt thats in there thinking though. Who here wouldnt support a breakaway though if it was due to foxtel continually screwing them over. Thats the only scenario I could see them wanting to start a new league. The fact theyre willing to sign a 1 year extension says to me they want to see if anything has changed.

The clubs want this for obvious reasons, the more power for them the better it is for them. But whether it is good for us (the fans) could go both ways. They could use this to make it easier for themselves to run to the next super league style scum competition. Or they could use it for good to protect themselves (and us) from getting screwed over by News or anyone else.

The sinister side could be the clubs breaking away and taking their marketbrand with them, the other side, and more likely, is it is a first step to clubs owning their trademark and rights to merchandising, advertising etc income from their brand.

They should sign a one year agreement and then work with the IC to get a 2013 -2018 agreement. The danger for clubs is that the IC could impose a min standards expectation on clubs to keep their licenses which they don;t have to now.
