The next few years are the perfect time to encourage relocation for one weak Syd team and expand. You will never have a 100% secure business like someone earlier claimed we should try and achieve first.
If the people who are advocating raising the club grants at the expense of expansion we running the game in the 1800's/early 1900's then we'd never have seen Rugby League spread outside of the UK.

edit:
If there is even the slightest problem with the Sharks development they have to go.

Cronulla is a f**king cancer on this league and are holding everyone else back. There are teams like the Reds and Bears who undoubtedly have more to offer the NRL and the game as a whole who are being knocked back just so these morons can waste more f**king money on their shit underachieving team, shit corrupt club, shit and absolutely pissweak fans and shit third world stadium.

No hate, just saying.

Does your arse ever get jealous that so much shit comes off your fingers and onto your keyboard???

eat a bag of dicks f**kwad.

were here to stay. just to shit you.

no hate. lol

pissweak fans. our fans stick solid with absolutely NO INCENTIVE.
none. theyve given us nothing and we are still standing strong and fighting off jizzrags like you that have it easy because you support a 1 town super team with infinite money. you can say were holding the game back but i dont see how we are stopping the broncos making money and winning infinitum. our membership is up 2 years in a row. we are fighting for our futures and the fans are actively involved in that.

as for "problems with the development"
its currently up for public comment. ending in DEC. decision march.

The Cowboys have more fans than your club even though your shire has more people than Townsville and you've had a thirty year headstart to build a fanbase.

Surely that shames you?

How many other NRL football teams in Townsville?

The question is, why aren't people choosing the Sharks over the alternatives???

When you find the answer, you will find the reason why a significant number of people think they shouldn't be in the NRL.

our fans are fewer in numbers, but by no means less passionate than anyone elses.

and if we won games im sure the bandwagon would be bigger.

its all about winning. and when you have a sustained period of losing and poor performance as we have..this ipad, yootube generation is gunna turn its attention to something else.

gotta win games. gotta have cash to do it. dont have the cash at the moment but we should be given the chance to rebuild ourselves. not just cast aside because "they havet he least numebr of fans. allegedly"

so what happens then..you start circling the next lowest fan team for the chop?

theyd be bringing teh game down too....allegedly

The teams are aiming for a billion dollar + tv deal with what they already have.

You are not, will not be and should not be on the radar until all clubs are financially secure.

What you are proposing is a MASSIVE gamble that an sensible business would LOL at.

You dont look at expanding your business until your current one is 100% secure, not loosing money in 90% of its sections.

Losing money? How is that the fault of expansion areas like Perth and Ipswich? If the expansion teams will bring in more TV money than they cost why not go for it?

All this comes down to the fact that some teams will have a natural advantage compared to others. Brisbane, being a 1 team town, will have access to more revenue compared to the multitude of teams in Sydney. Unless some Sydney teams fall by the wayside, merge or relocate, we will have the same issues coming up time and time again.

Once the IC is up and running, I say it will be time for tough decisions to be made for the good of the NRL as a whole, even if it does cause pain for some individual clubs and their fans.

How about a $20 million grant for teams that are prepared to merge?

How about a $20 million grant for teams that are prepared to merge?

Wouldn't that require the clubs to be unselfish though?

Unless a club is on the edge, and likely to fold, they won't OFFER to merge "for the good of the game". They might do it to ensure their longevity, but not just to make the competition smaller.

If there are any "tough decisions" to be made (as mentioned by Juro), they HAVE to be made by the NRL/IC/governing body. The clubs cannot be expected to show some sort of abstract, altruistic side, it just won't happen. I think most (if not all) current clubs are far more likely to see more value (be it financial or sentimental) in staying exactly where they are, rather than taking a one-off lump sum, and in turn losing a portion of their identity.

Go Cronulla, keep sticking it to the haters. That first premiership will be worth it...

I'm gonna throw up when the bandwagoners come up though, especially when there are so many passionate Sharks fans despite the woeful history/present/forseeable future. I actually think Cronulla does well to pull the crowds it does all things considered.

Agree entirely.

Although a complete fraud, the "criteria" process in 1999 signalled that rugby league, the clubs accepted that the game should be treated as a "business".

In that case, you chop the unproductive elements and focus on growth areas.

There should be another criteria now - eject the hopeless cases.
Going forward, to play in the NRL, each club should show previous year's financials (P&L, balance sheet) plus commitments for sponsorships, forecast P&L, balance sheet etc for upcoming year.

It is only with all clubs looking after themselves (and not looking for charity) that we will have a strong game and player strength spread evenly amongst the teams.

garbage
from start to finish ............ we don't need a criteria

or the bears ;-)

teams are competitive now on the field

thats one thing the NRL has got right ...... team 16 was a chance to rattle team 1's cage in 2011
something we haven't always had ....& this alone adds plenty to the ability of teams to eventually make more money
ie.. their fans will want to watch them play....

some other codes we won't mention don't have this
their comp was a farce in 2011.... & looks like being a bigger one in 2012

life always has have's & have nots

the only way the extra funding will work is if the NRL controls where it goes ... not the clubs
ie ... the clubs come to the NRL with their invoices ... & the NRL pays them
that way you can be assured the clubs with poor business practices don't see the money as a hand out & piss it up against the wall trying to get a jump on their rivals

its like a kid coming to their parents asking for money cos he or she can't pay the rent

the bad parent just hands it over ... & the kid goes to the track to try n double it ... & loses it
the good parent goes down to the real estate & pays it for him or her.

I'm not sure how workable it would be, and I'm sure this idea has been floated before, but I'd like to see the League (NRL, RLC or whatever it is called) pay the players, therefore covering the entire salary cap and enduring that every club spends the same amount on player wages. That would in essence be the grant, whether it was $5M, $6M or $7M. The money the clubs generate would then be spent on other aspects of the football operations and they can spend what they want and good luck to them. Life is full of haves and have nots. Sport should be no different. If clubs then choose to spend beyond their means, bad luck, find the money elsewhere. Would something like that be workable?

John Fahey pleads with clubs to defer demands for extra $34m

by: Brent Read
From: The Australian
October 14, 2011 12:00AM

FORMER NSW premier John Fahey has called on NRL clubs to delay their demand for more money until the new TV deal is finalised, warning the game will wither if cash is taken away from grassroots development.

Cash-strapped NRL clubs want an extra $34 million next season, although they have given no indication as to where that money should come from.

However, it has been suggested money could be redirected from other areas in the game. One of those potential areas is the game's grass roots.

World Anti-Doping Agency president Fahey, a former league player and current board member of Australia Rugby League Development, said a short-term grab for cash had the potential to damage the game at the lower levels. "We have a budget of $10m," Fahey said. "If they think there is room to take some money off the development at grassroots level, it would be a short-term fix that would guarantee the game would wither.

"There will be money in the game when the television contract is ultimately resolved. That won't happen until the (independent) commission is in place."

The commission is expected to take over running of the game on November 1, although the latest dramas between the clubs and the NRL have raised doubts over the deadline date being met.

The commissioners-elect will hold their next meeting on Tuesday and by then it is hoped

the latest impasse will be some way towards being resolved.

"It's nice to look after the 500 best players in the game but what about the other 150,000 that ultimately contribute to those 500 players being the elite," Fahey said. "It's a bit of the chicken and egg. We need the elite level to encourage young players to take up the sport. At the same time, let's not forget the junior development and grass roots of the game."
