Rugby league's independent commission over the line

THE longest-running saga in rugby league is finally over.

The Australian Rugby League has finally thrown its support behind an independent commission after agreeing on a model for the new body.

The ARL’s decision paves the way for New Limited (publisher of The Australian) and the ARL to hand over ownership of the game to the 16 clubs. Although the constitution of the new body is yet to be finalised, an independent commission is expected to be in place by the end of this season.

It is understood the new model will allow the Queensland and NSW Rugby Leagues to have veto rights over any future changes to the constitution. The bodies will also have a share in the game alongside the 16 clubs.

Fantastic result, and great minds think alike because they even took my idea of a compromise whereby the NSWRL and QRL get a vote each.

This is the best result for rugby league on the eve of a new season.

Brilliant.

Absolutely brilliant news. It's also massive that NSWRL and QRL have veto rights over constitutional changes. Very, very important provision that prevents the clubs entirely running the game by de facto.

It means we'll have some serious business minds negotiating the next TV deal. Here comes that $6 million salary cap. You beauty.

Gallop remains.

Can't wait.

Seriously though, great news. Sounds like an ideal compromise.

Did you hear Bill Woods' response?

"He'll be a much happier man compared to this time last year" (in reference to Gallop & off-field incidents).

The idiot just can't help himself.

ARL backs commission to run rugby league

AAP Thu, 11 Mar 2010 17:36:52

The Australian Rugby League has confirmed it will support an independent commission to run the game in Australia.

The board of the ARL has agreed in principle to a model proposed by its 50 per cent partner in the NRL, News Limited, for the commission.

An ARL statement on Thursday said the commission would be a not-for-profit entity that will include the NSW and Queensland Rugby Leagues as well as the 16 NRL clubs.

"The ARL believes that the in-principle agreement arrived at today will deliver a truly independent commission to run rugby league," ARL chairman Colin Love said in the statement.

"There is still a huge amount of detail to be worked through but today's agreement is a major step in the process.

"Both partners have committed to regular meetings to work through each of the points that will need to be discussed and the complex legal agreements that are involved.

"People need to understand the there is still a lot of work ahead."
