But isn't that the point, Gallop hasn't been in charge of any of the big things. All decisions on key revenue generators, expansion and so forth are reserved for the NRL Partnership Executive Committee as per the Partnership agreement between the ARL and News Ltd. If the PEC decides it's going to accept the first offer on television rights (from a company that also has 50% vote on the PEC no less) without putting it out to tender then there's really not a lot Gallop can do but toe the party line he's instructed to toe. If most of the decisions you've got a problem with are the big ones and not the day to day things, then pointing the finger at Gallop is letting the real culprits slip under the raider. It's the six members of the PEC representing the ARL and News Ltd that are making these decisions that you're citing. And thankfully they're the ones who are about to be rightfully replaced by the Commission.
Leigh.
I have pandered somewhat to the people who dont like gallop, but the honest truth is that he is a good administrator.
Too many times people have blasted him on here, yet he is lauded everywhere else. Expansion is a big one. The game cannot afford to expand now, its as plain as day, yet people on here still cry foul.
Gallop would make a good CEO for the IC. He's a good CEO right now. And yeah if you untied his hands I bet he could seem a lot better. Fact is he has a certain job to do right now, being employed to do a job for someone (the nrl) and he is doing it. Give him a new job and he will do new things. Is it so hard to comprehend? I dont think the guy is knocking back good deals for the game at all.
Thats the facts.
Radio is another one. But RL shows right now are very high rating so why change them? Open it up to everyone? Come on, its pretty well covered right now.
We could go on and on about people being sooks on here and having a whinge, yet they act so because they ignore hard evidence. And I often think they do so on purpose, just to whinge.
You guys must extract some facts from the papers, dont rely too much on their opinion and think for yourself. Much has been made about the commission but some of you seem to forget that the structure is a long way from what we have now and is far different. Its a system without compromise in which power is directly linked to the game once again. Yet people moan about the clubs having a say....its just a say, no club CEO is going to be able to influence things enough to have the system compromised. I dont see how people think the clubs are going to hi jack rl and ignore junior footy and all the rest. WHAT DO you people smoke who think that? It would be like cutting off your limbs.
And if not the NRL clubs choosing commissioners, then who? Local clubs? Other sports? A fan poll?? Come on guys, get real. People think the clubs will ruin the game, but all they will do is appoint commissioners. You gotta think. What about jury's and how they are appointed.....is there a fairer way than to get the nod from all parties and a veto vote from all parties? How else can you "protect" the game? There is no other conceivable way. Jury's get appointed and some people get vetoed, but usually the right decision is made because the community is sentencing the person (under rules). Is a commission any different? The clubs making decisions for the clubs? YES, NRL clubs...but here's the kicker....everything is geared toward the NRL clubs, everyone feeds off them so to speak.....and forget about dead spots on the league landscape...basically if its not to help the nrl clubs, the drivers of the game, where the magic happens, then its not helpful. I fail to see how they are just going to get a bunch of people in who will ruin everything.....to do so is going against sense and reason, and indeed going against the job they are appointed to do.
Thankyou Leigh, the fact is that some people on here ignore the facts.
I realise its hard to read my stuff sometimes because I point out some of you need to get a clue: must be hard hearing you're a bit dim on some things. Look at a classic question in another way: expansion...you got to think what would be the benefits right now if we had 2 more teams. Can we do it without breaking everyones bank? What will it give us (real, not imagined, like check with the people who currently pay you for a guide)? Do we have the money? Do we have the players? What will it mean for all the current arrangements? How will we go about it? When? Is the economy right? Will people invest in this?
Now, unless you know the exact answers to all of these, and can be specific, shut the hell up about how it should be happening, Gallops holding it back, afl is the devil, etc.
You may start to realise its not a great time to expand and get it right.....and hold on, because a commission can look into this in the future because right now Gallop and Co know its not viable and have said so.
So maybe you have no idea about who will make a good CEO or not, or whether the commission is the devil in disguise. And such things like knowing when to expand in the current league market is like reading the weather: its unpredictable.
Thanks Leigh. Top post.
