This is an interesting development.
It would make Origin interesting! Then again, it might be the only way NSW players would ever win one again.
Commission goes cold on Quayle
Daniel Lane
January 2, 2011
ONE of the mysteries of the impending independent commission is the rumour that John Quayle has been dropped like a cold spud after reports he was certain to join the eight-person commission. One theory is that some administrators see him as yesterday's man. Another is that he was tainted by his role in the Super League-ARL war of the mid-1990s. Quayle is at the peak of his administrative powers, having worked in the Olympics and global sport since leaving rugby league 15 years ago. The Super League war shouldn't be a consideration. Indeed, David Gallop, who'll remain on board in league's new world order, saw action then too. Both men simply did their jobs and the game has since moved on. The Men of League organisation wants Quayle. Its president, Ron Coote, wrote in their latest magazine: ''John is one of the smartest guys I've met and would be an outstanding contributor to any commission.'' Former NSW premier John Fahey, head of the World Anti-Doping Agency, also seems to have lost favour. If the commission-makers can ignore such men, they must have one heck of a panel in mind.
The TV deal is just one source of income, too. If you want to compare NRL vs AFL, you'd need to consider all sources of income...
memberships, merchandise, sponsorship, game attendances.
THE AFL is reeling after receiving an independent report into the state of its merchandising business, putting it well behind the NRL in terms of the multi-million dollar industry. The report, obtained by Bec and Buzz, says the AFL's sales are $15 million less than the NRL across the country, and reveals:
* The AFL sells a whopping 68 per cent less merchandise per fan than the NRL, though twice as many attend AFL games than NRL matches;
* Licensing revenue has fallen dramatically, even though memberships and game attendances are steady; and
* The AFL sells only one-tenth of the merchandise per person attending a game than the most successful merchandising code in the world, the NFL.
The report is damning of distribution and point of sale strategies and has called for a complete overhaul of every aspect of the AFL's licensing department. The AFL is now looking at a complete restructure of the department, which will lead to many of the current licensees being axed.

Who gives a f**k about the AFL and where it gets its money from besides perth red (JB).
No need to talk about how f**king great you think they are in every thread here and every thread at other forums, some people might get the idea you're here to be their official cheer squad leader.
They could have 10 billion in the bank, so what and good on them, still has nothing to do with RL.
With the AFL's plentiful bank balance id imagne they would have numerous investments, commercial property etc etc etc ???????????
Before you ride off into the sunset on your high horse, I believe the reason why discussing what the AFL are doing re income could be used as a platform for the NRL to find similar sources of income and perhaps bridge the gap.
