Atlantic Cup 2010 – Day 6, Guns, Burgers and Football

November 20th, 2010
By Daniel Andruczyk

This morning, the Jamaicans were up early to have a well earned day off. With their tournament over now and their fate now in the hands of the Canadians, its a waiting game to see who wins the Atlantic Cup. The Jamaican players travel to Orlando and will stay over night there to relax. This is a big thing for many of them. The domestic based players, many of them out of the country for the first time, get to see what America is like. Some of the team management are staying here in Jacksonville to have their own break.

Tomahawks Overpower the Wolverines to Win 2010 Atlantic Cup.

November 21st, 2010
By Daniel Andruczyk

The USA Tomahawks today confirmed that they were the top dogs in the Atlantic region with an emphatic victory over the Canadian Wolverines 46-12. The tournament was still in the balance, if Canada won the the Jamaicans would be champions, if the Canadians won by 31 or more then they would be champions. A big crowd of 2800 turned out to see the Tomahawks. Pre game entertainment was by a local band Down Theory and pulled a great crowd. In the car park people were tailgating, which in this country is a great sign.

Jamaica Look to go Pro

November 26th, 2010
By Daniel Andruczyk

With the Atlantic Cup almost a week behind us now its given me time to sit back relax and think about what I had just witnessed and ponder some of the more interesting news that came out of the tournament. This news wasn’t announced in any pomp and ceremony but on the side in just regular discussions over beers and food late late in the night while I was working. The first hint of this came when we dropped off one of the crucial members of this team off at the airport.

Lets Calm the Hysteria.

December 1st, 2010
By Daniel Andruczyk

OK so you must have been on Mars the last week to have missed Russel Crowes announcement, or dream really, to have an expanded Rugby League World Club Challenge Tournaments played in the USA. Namely, Las Vegas was named as the likely place. But before we all start bellowing hallelujah, the saviour is here, lets take some Valium and a step back and really analyse what this would mean for the sport of Rugby League. In particular in having it expand internationally. When I thought about this and worked through it, I was surprised. Russel’s proposal could do more damage to Rugby League than good!

Dru, could you check out what is happening in Ireland? I just went to their website www.rli.ie - which I've been to many many times in the past, and it is now "suspended".
not sounding good.

Rugby League World Cup 2013

December 3rd, 2010
By Daniel Andruczyk

So finally the 2013 World Cup has been officially launched. The four groups featuring the 14 teams have been decided also, with two groups of 4 and two groups of three. For teams in the two 3 teams groups an interesting set up to give them an even number of games has been proposed. Also there are no super groups.

IMO there are 2 super groups, Groups A and B. Or maybe they could be called semi-super groups. 3 out of 4 teams from these groups qualify for the quarterfinals, so I think that is quite "super".

Lezignan Lose Their First

December 7th, 2010
By Daniel Andruczyk

This week we await with anticipation the new commission in Australia that will run Rugby League. Unfortunately there is not much information about how the states outside of New South Wales and Queensland will fare and how the International Game will suffer because of it. Though Colin Love is leaving his post in the ARL and NSWRL will he also be leaving the RLIF or will there be someone new to hijack the international game. But in the meantime there have been some international and domestic results from various countries.

The Not So Independent, Independent Commission?

December 13th, 2010
By Daniel Andruczyk

So you really need to have been under a rock 6 miles underground the last year to not know about the “Independent Commission” that is supposedly being set up in Australia to control the game. I say supposedly because the last few weeks I have been thinking about it, reading the various articles that are coming out etc… and well I don’t think there will be anything independent about it! In fact it will be less independent. However that is not necessarily a bad thing, you see what Australian Rugby League needs is not an Independent commission.

But first some domestic and international results that have come through the week.

Lebanon Washed Right Out

December 16th, 2010
By Daniel Andruczyk

Winter is upon us, if the American Midwest conditions are anything to go by (we have got to –19 C a few days ago) then Europe is also experiencing tough times. The snow and rain has had effect on many games in Europe and last weekend was no exception with Lebanon being effected. But France played on and some good results there with a few exciting matches.

The Case Against Tours

December 19th, 2010
By Daniel Andruczyk

One of the debates that has come out of recently is that there aren’t any tours in Rugby League any more. The last Ashes tour was in 2003 when Australia went to the UK. But in hind sight I think this is not a bad thing. In fact not having tours ultimately is the best thing that can happen to Rugby League if it wants to truly expand internationally.
