RLWC '17 Qualifiers - Europe

When they lose to Italy again they might think again.

And a side as underwhelming as Wales isn't going to leave two of their best players out because they missed a few days of training. They've got three or four games coming up.

Interesting that they have 4 Ironmen players but 0 Crusaders who finished much higher ?
Wrexham is only about 5 miles from the border with England, almost all of their players are English and come from SL academies or heartland amateur clubs. South Wales on the other hand is very isolated and their squad is pretty much 100% homegrown.

Fair enough, that's a bit disappointing from the Crusaders.
Not really, Crusaders happen to be based over the border in a different country but they would still be a lot closer and more accessible to players from the heartlands than say Cumbria would be. It's only 40 minutes drive to Warrington and about an hour to Wigan/Leigh. They aren't much different from the likes of Rochdale or Swinton really, barely any of those type of clubs develop their own players because they don't need to and most of them can't afford to. Crusaders can barely afford to pay their first team players at the moment. North Wales has a lot more in common with the North of England than it does with South Wales anyway, people from North Wales don't even sound Welsh or really identify with Welsh culture in the same way.

I just saw the Italian squad to play Serbia and just about the whole squad is heritage players.. Terry Campese and Shannon Wakeman from The Illawarra Cutters he's going to tear them apart..

I can definitely see Italy winning this one. it doesn't seem right but I suppose they are the rules.

And Josh Mantellato is also in the Italian squad too. He's the goalkicking former Newcastle Knights winger playing in the SuperLeague now who also played for Italy in the last RLWC.

You can't complain about NRL players not committing to the Pacific islands, almost every single one being a heritage player, and then get upset about Italy.

Slight diffrent point but Ireland must be thrilled with how the draw panned out. They have by far the two weakest sides in there group. They are basically guaranteed to go through

I wonder if Ireland would've used as many domestic players had they been grouped with Italy?

Despite all the hype, I fear Wales vs Serbia might be a cricket score.

Russia/Spain on the other hand, should be a close one!

What quota?

http://www.walesrugbyleague.co.uk/article/14850/italy-comply-with-domestic-quota

Following the public release of the 22-man Italian squad that had three players from domestic clubs involved, Wales Rugby League can confirm the Italian Federation meet the domestic quota rulings of four players after confirmation from the Rugby League European Federation.

Wales play Italy in Monza in a crunch 2017 Rugby League World Cup Qualifier on October 29 following the opening group game against Serbia this Saturday, kicking-off at 3pm at Parc Stebonheath, Llanelli.

Wins against Serbia and Italy will book Wales a place in the 2017 Rugby League World Cup in Australia.

The tournament regulations state every nation must have four players in their matchday 19-man squads who meet the domestic quota rulings.

Wales CEO Chris Thair: “A number of queries came into us from Wales fans, so we are glad to be able to respond publicly.

"A basic rule of thumb on the domestic quota rules is that to qualify a player they must have played in ten games in that nation at some point in their playing career, or have never played rugby league before.

“With Italy naming only three players who play domestically and nineteen who play in other countries - namely 13 from Australian clubs, five from UK clubs and one from a French club - the query was a legitimate one.

"We are glad to confirm Italy have four players in their 22-man squad who meet the domestic quota ruling.

"The RLEF have also confirmed these four players must be named in every matchday 19-man squad in order to meet World Cup regulations.

"We are glad to be able to clarify this for the fans, are really looking forward to our three international games against Serbia, Jamaica and Italy over the next three weekends and hope the fans can come along in numbers to the games”.

Newcastle Thunder's Gioele Celerino is the fourth player for Italy to qualify in the domestic quota ruling after clearance in 2013, before pursuing a career in the UK.

Patrik Zilioti plays in Italy and Italian Rugby Union international Mirco Bergamasco, a wildcard addition to the squad, also meets the criteria.

Meanwhile, Guiseppe Pagani started out in Italy, before moving on to Coventry Bears and now Newcastle.

That's a very old rule for World Cup qualifying matches dating back to around 2006, didn't know it was still in place and it certainly wasn't enforced for the Pacific qualifier.

wtf!? that cannot possibly be right! If so, it surely wasn't enforced for the Tonga vs Cooks WC qualifying match last year!!

"Whispers come to us that Canberra youngster Nick Cotric was stopped playing for Serbia in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers. Cotric has recently re-signed with the Raiders and they have blocked him taking part in the matches. He turns 18 in November is a highly regarded young talent, but it is a shame he won't get to take part in Serbia's matches with a World Cup spot on the line."

Can we unequivocally accept that Ricky Stuart is detrimental to international rugby league? Has blocked players from the Pacific Tests and now RLWC Qualifiers

What use is a 4 man quota in a 19 man squad lol. May as well just admit its a 2 man quota.

As for Serbia. They'll be happy to know that Jake Trbojevic's mystery injury has been healed as he is now fit enough to be called into the Australian squad.

There needs to be far harsher punishments for this kind of blocking from coaches.
