Following the public release of the 22-man Italian squad that had three players from domestic clubs involved, Wales Rugby League can confirm the Italian Federation meet the domestic quota rulings of four players after confirmation from the Rugby League European Federation.
Wales play Italy in Monza in a crunch 2017 Rugby League World Cup Qualifier on October 29 following the opening group game against Serbia this Saturday, kicking-off at 3pm at Parc Stebonheath, Llanelli.
Wins against Serbia and Italy will book Wales a place in the 2017 Rugby League World Cup in Australia.
The tournament regulations state every nation must have four players in their matchday 19-man squads who meet the domestic quota rulings.
Wales CEO Chris Thair: “A number of queries came into us from Wales fans, so we are glad to be able to respond publicly.
"A basic rule of thumb on the domestic quota rules is that to qualify a player they must have played in ten games in that nation at some point in their playing career, or have never played rugby league before.
“With Italy naming only three players who play domestically and nineteen who play in other countries - namely 13 from Australian clubs, five from UK clubs and one from a French club - the query was a legitimate one.
"We are glad to confirm Italy have four players in their 22-man squad who meet the domestic quota ruling.
"The RLEF have also confirmed these four players must be named in every matchday 19-man squad in order to meet World Cup regulations.
"We are glad to be able to clarify this for the fans, are really looking forward to our three international games against Serbia, Jamaica and Italy over the next three weekends and hope the fans can come along in numbers to the games”.
Newcastle Thunder's
Gioele Celerino is the fourth player for Italy to qualify in the domestic quota ruling after clearance in 2013, before pursuing a career in the UK.
Patrik Zilioti plays in Italy and Italian Rugby Union international
Mirco Bergamasco, a wildcard addition to the squad, also meets the criteria.
Meanwhile,
Guiseppe Pagani started out in Italy, before moving on to Coventry Bears and now Newcastle.
