Sydney and Brisbane people won't be happy but nice ideas. Just worried about the cost.

I could see a world cup like this, with the pooling I created.

Pool A
Australia
England
Ireland
Lebanon
PNG

Pool B
New Zealand
France
Tonga
Wales
USA

Week 1:
(A) Friday Night - Australia vs England - Melbourne, Telstra dome
(B) Saturday Afternoon(night NZ time, arvo Aus time) - NZ vs France - Wellington
(A) Saturday Night - Ireland vs Lebanon - Sydney, Parramatta Stadium
(B) Sunday Afternoon - Tonga vs USA - Gold Coast, Robina
PNG bye
USA bye

(1 non-heartland in Melbourne, 3 heartland in Wellington, Sydney and GC)

Week 2:
(A) Friday Night - Australia vs Ireland - Perth, Members Equity
(B) Saturday Afternoon - NZ vs Tonga - Auckland
(A) Saturday Night - England vs PNG - Port Moresby
(B) Sunday Afternoon - France vs USA - Canberra

Week 3:
(A) Friday Night - Australia vs Lebanon - Adelaide, Hindmarsh Stadium
(B) Saturday Afternoon - NZ vs Wales - Christchurch
(A) Saturday Night - PNG vs Ireland - Port Moresby
(B) Sunday Afternoon - Tonga vs USA - Brisbane
England bye
France bye

(2-non heartland in Adelaide and Christchurch, 2 in Port Moresby and Brisbane)

Week 4:
(A) Friday Night - Australia vs PNG - Townsville
(B) Saturday Afternoon - NZ vs USA - Hamilton
(A) Saturday Night - England vs Lebanon - Newcastle

(4 heartland in Townsville, Hamilton, Newcastle, Wollongong)

Week 5:
(A) Friday Night - England vs Ireland - Brisbane
(B) Saturday Afternoon - France vs Tonga - North Harbour, NZ
(A) Saturday Night - Lebanon vs PNG - Sydney, Parramatta Stadium

NZ bye

(4 heartland)

Semifinal according to seedings

Semi-final 1: Australia vs France - Brisbane
Semi-final 2: NZ vs England - Auckland

Final: Australia vs ?? - Sydney, Telstra

Overall the tournament would have the allocation of games to

Sydney: 3
Brisbane: 3
Auckland + North Harbour: 3
Port Moresby: 2

Other NSW/ACT:
Newcastle: 1
Wollongong: 1
Gosford: 1
Canberra: 1

Other Qld:
Townsville: 1
Gold Coast: 1

Other Australia:
Perth: 1
Melbourne: 1
Adelaide: 1

Other NZ:
Wellington: 1

Hamilton: 1

A fairly even spread I would say.

You need more big games in Sydney and Brisbane for the pool games.

Screw Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide for Kangaroos games! To make this tournament a success we need to build hype, support and focus on the heartlands.

It is unfair to the rest of the world that the United Kingdom and Ireland should get four teams of 10/12. They do not deserve it. If you are going to split them up, only 2 should be in the tournament.

If you look at the 2000 WC, both Ireland and Scotland played with mostly GP rulers.

Besides, one GB team would have a much better chance to win than 4 separate teams.

And also, the cup should be used to spread the game. The Kangaroos should play outside the heartlands, who get to see them every year. I think that Sydney, Brisbane, and Auckland should mostly host finals, with there being pool matches at Townsville, Gold Coast, Newcastle, Gosford, Wollongong, Canberra, Melbourne, Tasmania, Adelaide, Perth. PNG should play one or two home matches.

NZ should play pool matches at Otago, Christchurch, and Wellington, with Rotorua and Waikato, as well as Ericsson Stadium and North Harbour, getting non-NZ pool matches. A quarter final should be held at Jade Stadium, and a Semi Final at Eden Park.

This format would help promote league all across NZ and Australia, while also giving games to the heartlands of PNG, QLD, and NSW.

Will the usa qualify for the 2008wc,surely they will have trouble beating ,samoa, south africa, west indies, russia, georgia + it has already been said that the home nations will be seperate. This is the downside of a 10/12 team wc ,no room for emerging nations

Yankeeboy--Don't like how the teams play each other twice in the pool games. Turn it into 3 X 4 team pools if it's a 12 team comp. Then the top 2 from each Pool progress to the next round with 2 wild card spots awarded to the two highest total points after the Pool games.

Nice idea though but I've never seen a world cup of any sport use a system where teams play each other twice. There's a possibility that some teams would face each other 3 times and I think this loses it's gloss. I like the selection of venues however I would cut one or two venues for costing purposes.

Good ideas but the amount of weeks the comp is over needs to be reduces. With a split 2 pools of 5 we have a problem with 1 team having to have a bye which adds time to the comp. Maybe it will be more cost effective if we do add 2 more teams in and make it 12 and drop the bye . Like the union world cup we need to spread the games over mid week , say Thurday thru Monday for the round games with some playing 2 games in that period like a team playing Thursday and on the Monday.

I don't think the teams could afford to stay the duration of the cup , in your proposal it would be a 7 week World Cup . Need to cut that down to a 5 week tournament. Cost saving in areas of Acommadation , meals and obviously those players who are ameuters or semi pro's won't be able to afford 5- 7 weeks off.

Couple more things to consider I suppose

yakstorm will there definately be some announcements in july? will there be a press conference etc? hopefully some things will be cleared up, and the process of building it up can begin. we may not all agree with whatever decisions are made concerning the world cup, but we should all be excited that we are actually having one, and from all reports going about it the right way this time.

Why don't the RLIF just run a 16 team cup. Australia (or at least QLD and NSW) is a league hotbed. They would be happy to have even more WC games.

This way also creates space for Emerging Nations to compete in the main cup, and would also allow the Home Nations to compete separately.

They need to ensure that there are qualifiers, though, so that the cup is not the farce it was in 2000. They could do them geographically, with a Europe/Africa/Mediterranean region and an Americas/Asia region, with the Europe region having more qualifiers as it has more nations.

I would change the GP rule to state that players must have at least two grandparents or a parent from the country to qualify. They could possibly make an exception to no more than 10-15% of the team with one grandparent, but they must have played with the nation in the past. If Luke Ricketson wanted to play for Ireland, he would be allowed, but other players who are just playing with a country because they didn't get selected for the Lions or Kangaroos would not be allowed to play for a country unless they commit to that country for after the cup.
