RLWC Pros and Cons

Channel 7 seem to have embraced the tournament and their coverage has been good so far from what I have seen.. it's refreshing seeing RL on a FTA network other than 9 for a change...

Ratings on Fri night were great and hopefully that might encourage 7 to bid for more NRL and International RL...

Unfortunately Aust now zombies around for a couple of weeks in a couple of meaningless games.... I can't say that's a great way to capitalise on some interest from the casual fan created after the first game but to be fair it's not an easy thing to fix in the early rounds...

Obviously Australia should easily beat Lebanon but I think its going to get a fair bit of hype in Sydney at least.

I hope so and there is a big Lebanese community in Sydney...

Was thinking more in terms of TV audiences in the AFL states that were good on Friday night... will they hold up is the question. .

Con,

It looks like France one of the few nations with a credible domestic scene are already out.

No jerseys for sale in the stadium store in Canberra except for Australian.

There was a stream of people asking for French and Lebanese jerseys and they were all being turned away.

Amateur hour with the schedling
PNG v Wales in Port Moresby in 30 plus degree heat. There was only going to be one result.

Australians have no idea how much heat effects people from the Northern Hemisphere. I remember coming here and barely being able to stand up in December, January or February in Sydney

It took me ten years of living here to semi acclimatise. After 22 years here I struggle.

Those Welsh players were f**ked after 10 minutes. It was embarrassing

Why are Northern Hemisphere minnows playing Southern Hemisphere teams in PNG, Cairns, Townsville etc in the middle of the f**king afternoon?

Stupid, stupid, stupid

Have to disagree with u. It’s a Southern Hemisphere World Cup these are the conditions teams sign up for. same as conditions are great for Wales and Ireland when the World Cup is in the northern hemisphere. Besides it didn’t seem to affect Ireland playing in the heat they looked great today. Whether u played that game in the arvo or at night PNG are a far better team then Wales atm

I agree with the timing of the games. It hot and its only going to get hotter later in the tournament. Could've at least cut the NRL/SuperLeague back a couple of weeks so the finals arent played in even worst heat.

The idea of a World Cup shouldn't be to f**k one bunch of teams over in favour of others.

Of course PNG are a better team than Wales. That's why you don't need to stack everything in their favour. It added 20 points to PNG and made the game far more lop sided than it needed to be.

If we want to build interest in the game creating ridiculously one sided contests isn't the best idea.

The weather in the Northern Hemisphere does even things slightly for the Euro sides but playing in the English autumn is a damn sight easier for everyone than spring time near the equator.

These games should be scheduled later in the day or further South.

Pros:
  • Channel 7 - a breath of fresh air. No listening to 9 commentators ramble on.
  • Performance of the island nations - looking great early on
  • The home games of PNG and NZ. Spectacular. Excepted by PNG but nice to see NZ after diabolical preparation.
  • Ireland's performance. I think we expected Italy and Tedesco to put on a show.
  • Media coverage. Generally positive if a little quiet. At least not putting the boot in.
  • Lebanon - pity they are full of Aussies but the win today should help the Sydney crowds.
  • Ratings. Awesome so far - annihilating the Wallabies is a highlight.
Cons
  • Scheduling. A million games in Townsville, Cairns and Canberra is not looking good. Games overlapping. Daytime games in tropical climates.
  • Ticketek. Don't trust anything you see on their system again. And last minute price adjustments??!!
  • Kangaroos dance. WTF.
  • Performances from Wales, Scotland and USA. not entirely unexpected - it was always going to be an uphill struggle.
Overall - a lot more positives than negatives. The scheduling is probably the biggest negative for me.

Edit. Somehow I put half my positives as negatives....

Ireland were playing Italy, neither Italy or Sydney (where many of the players were raised) have cairns type weather.
Sure a wet Friday night in Whitehaven may have given Scotland an edge over NZ last year but I don’t think you can compare it to Port Moresby yesterday.

the biggest con for me (as an irish supporter) is that due to the pool structures we will likely see Ireland not progress with 2 wins (assuming they lose to png) whilst lebanon and samoa will progress with only 1 likely win each. That progression also guarantees them qualification to 2021.

pros have included countries opting to use domestic players. channel 7 coverage sh8ts from a great height on channel 9

Good

The TV Ratings and Seven's coverage. Proof that the interest is there for international RL.

Passionate fans and players - PNG, Tonga, Samoa, and Lebanon. Great to see. In Canberra yesterday even the small amount of French fans made themselves heard and had a great time. Scenes of tears as players who have been criticised as ring ins belt out their national anthems, war dances and prayers.

The quality of most games and some unpredictable results. Ireland beating the more favoured Italy was a win for the Northern Hemisphere and will keep us guessing into weeks 2 and 3, and while England still couldn't knock over Australia, they asked enough questions to ensure the tournament winner isn't a foregone conclusion.

The PNG crowd was outstanding and NZ quite good despite a lot of negativity coming from there.

The largely positive print media coverage of the tournament seems to be an improvement on previous iterations. Hopefully some of the crowds and blowouts don't see this turn around.

Bad

Sadly, every one of these was predicted beforehand and is just another chapter in Rugby League administration limiting the sport's potential for mediocre short term gains. So much potential for a well-staged event was deliberately thrown away in return for an easy cash in, I hope the amount was worth it but I very much doubt it was. The bar was set dazzlingly low and we've failed to reach it, again.

The crowds in Melbourne, Townsville and Canberra. Garbage.

Lack of neutral refs. No one really believes the Australian refs are deliberately biased but the fact is we aren't having this conversation at all if they stop putting Aus refs in charge of Aus games. Only Australians are arrogant enough to suggest that only our referees are good enough to handle the World Cup while bagging the same refs for 9 months of the year AND bagging the quality of WC games.

The venues. Townsville and Canberra (and wait to see Cairns 3rd game) getting 3 games while Gold Coast, Newcastle, Gosford, Western Sydney, Wollongong, and even Adelaide (at a stretch) get nothing is a massive fail. Again, I hope the government's money was worth it. Better choice of venues would have seen crowds in some cases double and far more positive coverage for the tournament.

The scheduling. It's one thing to play so many games in the tropics but in the PNG case to put players through tropical weather and not even play the games at night is simply cruel, and contributes to blowout scores.

The marketing and ticketing. A complete and utter failure. The entire marketing budget of about $130 seems to have been spent on a few billboards and not much else. The ticketing strategy is baffling. I have defended their right to put premium prices on tickets if the demand is there but at this point it is clear that those prices aren't justified by demand. The 450k crowd target will take a miracle at this stage. Or a major change and improvement in strategy, which I doubt we'll see.

The supposed Rugby League fans who continue to thumb their noses at the international game. How someone can have a snobby attitude towards their own game, a game that sits in the backwaters of world sport, is beyond me. As much as the tournament organisers have dropped the ball in a lot of areas, the saddest thing is the people who don't support the game in any meaningful way while calling themselves huge fans. France v Lebanon especially deserved far better than it got. Rugby League fans who bag their own game are worse than fans of other sports who do.

Last of all the no-show on radio. Hopeless.

Noteable

France, one of the few purely homegrown teams already out, barring the mother of all chokes from England or Australia. This isn't a criticism of anyone really, just a bit of a sad outcome. The wait for France's Rugby League renaissance continues.

My 'Bad' doesn't include blowouts for two reasons. Firstly, big scores are common in any World Cup and even in most club comp finals series. They aren't a reason to criticise the tournament. Secondly, if some luck with injuries had swung Wales or Scotland's way instead of Tonga hitting the jackpot with NZ defections, we'd be seeing a very different story.

No point repeating what others have said but one con for me has been the cringing reaction from 'fans' about the Aussie war cry thing. I think the players took it seriously and that's all we really need to know. Even more of an indigenous flavour is needed next time.

Overall, loving the tournament so far.

Despite my list of Cons being longer than the Pros, I have to say I loved week 1. An entertaining opener and a great trip down to Canberra, some good games and interesting results. I can't fault the nations, teams, players involved or the fans who showed up.

It's a lot easier to write an essay about criticisms than it is about something you're happy about, and the sport's admins and fans just keep putting up targets.

Con's:

Knowing that we won't see most of these teams play in a meaningful way again for another 4 Years. There needs to be many more International matches played during the year and post NRL season. I was astonished to hear the commentators mention during the NZ vs Samoa game, that this was the first time the Kiwis have played in NZ for 3 years!!. Too often it's out of sight, out of mind with International RL.

Pros

The on-field product so far has been great. Blow-outs aren't really a factor in my opinion. Tonga, Fiji, PNG, Ireland were all fantastic to watch. Some really good attacking footy that is rarely seen in the NRL as the slowing down tactics dominate.

The passion of the fans, PNG especially. The Lebanon supporters made the crowd sound double what it was and the atmosphere in Auckland sounded great too.

The players. Could barley fault anyone's commitment to their country. The American domestics had a real crack and Scotland played their hearts out like always. The tears, anthems, war crys, hymns etc. are what puts international footy above all else in my opinion. Us Australians only ever give a shit about Origin for some dumb reason but the passion we show for that has nothing on PNG.

No Channel 9 involved. Channel 7 has been good without being great. Most of the commentary has been excellent with the exception of Braybook and Belcher. TV Ratings are great. Every game on free-to-air is unbelievable. At our pub we had every game on.

The positive media coverage. It's great to see so many praising Taumalolo and Fifita for playing for Tonga. I've never seen many RL journos positive about International footy before this WC.

The fans who tune in just to see some good footy. Out here some fans have got into international footy when they didn't care before, mainly due to high profile players playing for Tonga and Fiji, as well as seeing new teams like the USA for the first time.

Cons

The scheduling, obviously. Not player-friendly, not crowd-friendly, not game-friendly. The venues reward government bidding rather than the majority of fans.

Promotion/Tickets etc. Most of the promotion has been through the players and the usual naysayers deciding to praise the WC this time round. From the actual organisers there's been next to nothing. I don't understand what they are going for with tickets. I remember all my tickets for the 2013 RLWC being relatively cheap. I also remember buying jerseys at games for 50 pounds. Outside AAMI Park on Friday jerseys were $170. They seem to have adopted the NRL attitude of 10,000 at $100 > 20,000 at $50.

Opening Ceremony was a bit tame I thought. Lots of flames and pretty lights to mask what wasn't much.

No neutral refs. Also the difference between how the game is refereed in Australia compared to England. Ceccin reffed like it was Origin while Child penalised any little thing.

No Fox involvement. It's good that 7 have every game but to think on a dedicated League channel we haven't been seeing old World Cup games nor we will see replays of these games is disappointing.

Pitch invaders at Auckland.

The insularity of NRL clubs. How can a Broncos doctor rule out Korbin Sims a couple of days before a match for Fiji? If the player doesn't want to play, then fair enough. But clubs should not be allowed to stand down players from international games.

The insularity/apathy of some fans. If it's not their club they don't care. Too many Australians have always had this attitude towards the international game.

Injuries. Both before the tournament and during the first week. Nothing anyone can do, but it's still disappointing.
