Pro: These Stats just for Week 1

Outside of the poor ticket strategy, the tournament so far has been a success. Interest is high, publicity has mainly been positive, we've drawn some great sponsors who would be over the moon with the level of coverage it has been getting.

As for blow outs, honestly in some ways these are actually positive for future weeks. PNG v Ireland will get a lot more casual interest now that PNG actually look like a threat in a World Cup. Tonga is doing a great job at selling the dream that they might somehow win this tournament (pipe dream, but definitely one their win over Scotland looks a lot more believable) and as for Fiji over the US, well this one is a shame as there aren't many positives to it.

Week Two is the danger round for blow outs, as all games, except for possible Tonga v Samoa, could turn out with big score differentials... Here's hoping that isn't the case, and that Scotland, France, Wales and Lebanon all put up some resistance.

The fact that a vast majority of the players in the US team were Americans is a real plus. Its tangible evidence that rugby league is sprouting in the USA and Canada. All good and if the momentum continues the next world cup will see an improvement in the North American teams.

From the first weekend the postives I could take out of it where

- The TV ratings
- Englands performance showed that the world cup isn't a foregone conclusion. Australia can be beaten
- Ireland blowing away Italy. Everyone expected Italy to do a job on them but the Irish played superbly
- Lebanon winning
- Positive publicity
- The exposure in PNG was fantastic from what I heard

The Con's

- Disappointing crowds
- Poor scheduling. Playing Rugby League at 2pm in Cairns when it's almost November just isn't wise.
- A couple of blowouts but that happens in every World Cup

The positives are out weighing the negatives if you ask me

Possible Pro; Players and international teams publicising the ridiculous non recognition of rugby league as a distinct sport to the world's media!

Con: The draw has been structured to make the pool outcomes super predictable as the week one games have basically decided everything...

In Pool A, (assuming no major upsets) it will be Australia > England > Lebanon > France

In Pool B, with Tonga jumping ahead of Samoa, the last week will be interesting (but that was luck. The tournament draw was designed to give us the same as poolA)

I understand the desire to open the WC with the big games, but surely ending with the deciding games is the better option.

If England-Australia and Lebanon-France in the final week, the teams would be warmed up for big performances and everything would be riding on these results....

Fun fact: Monaco is actually a country.

But is not a member of FIFA or UEFA despite places like San Marino, Andorra and Gibraltar being so.
So the only team called Monaco that Brazil could play is a club side and they wouldn’t.

Overall it's been a massive success so far: I especially love the USA, PNG, and French teams filled with homegrown patriots - it adds so much colour and flavour to the tournament.
The Scotland and Wales results are a little disappointing but not-at-all surprising given they are teams of part-timers from a temperate climate playing in the tropics in late spring.
I also take it as a positive for the strength of the PNG and Tongan teams - hopefully they can give a good showing in the quarter finals.

Then improvise. Decide which match/es you're going to watch. Pop down to the bottle shop and purchase beer from each of the competing nations and consume the correct beer for the relevant team as and when they score. You know it makes sense.

I'm liking it, world cup beer consuming game! Can you buy Tongan beer?

If you can't find a beer from any of the competing teams then either double up on the ones you can find or look for a beer from the nearest country to the one you can't find. If you can't find an American beer then try a Corona instead ;).

Don't forget though that English beer MUST be consumed at room temperature for it to count.

That's because it actually tastes of something and you don't need to freeze your tastebuds during consumption to numb the taste of the pss like most main stream Australian beers! Thank god they eventually discovered IPA and german beers to start brewing here lol. My first taste of Emu beer was one of the worse memories of all time!
