To be fair, without the Lebanon fans it would have been much worse.

Lebanon fans were the biggest group, then neutrals, then France fans.

I’ve been to Canberra Stadium over 100 times and the crowd felt bigger than that.

Agree it did feel more than that. I thought 8k. It definitely felt more than the A League games I went to this year.

The ticketing was horrible but I think the crowd was better distributed. There was only a tiny amount in the upper tier of the main grandstands. Usually these are much fuller so that might explain the lower figure.

Great effort by the Lebanese!

The question has to be asked... where the hell were the locals?

4K + Lebanese supporters travelled from Sydney, how many NRL Sydney teams get that? Pathetic from the Canberra RL fans!!

Hmmmm just under 10k in Cairns.

30k less people than tinpot Townsville but obviously don't have the arrogance to think they deserve more than smaller games.

The Australian delivery element of this tournament hasn’t been a patch on the NZ and PNG parts so far - very disappointing!

At Cairns now. Shame about the blowout score in this second game, but the crowd seem to have enjoyed the day. A real mix of people getting dressed up and shouting for the four teams.

There was 2 games in cairns today yeah? So you can split that 10k crowd in half for the 2 games for counting purposes.

22k in Melbourne (a city of 4.4mil) for an Oz v England opening game.

5.4k in Canberra (a city of 400k) for a minnow ‘clash’.

5k in Tvl (a city of 195k) for a minnow ‘clash’.

But Tvl is the ‘tin pot arrogant town’........ FMD.

All 4 games in Oz had disappointing crowds, the other 2 were great. You can carry on all you want like a derranged old fruit. If the minnow games were so attractive, why weren’t the bigger cities interested in it? That’s right, because they were always going to be shit games wether us diehards on here like it or not.

Oh right so Townsville fans would have come in double the numbers if they'd hosted two smaller games? But but but smaller games are beneath them aren't they?

Cairns > Hicksville. Forget the new stadium. Build it in Cairns where the people aren't arrogant entitled merkins.

Every crowd in Australia has been awful. As a country we're just poor at getting out to games and supporting the international game. I'm assuming we won't come close to the 450K pipe dream, league always missing the bars it set for itself.

Also I thought the Lebanese fans were mostly in Sydney. Hardly surprising the Canberra crowd was average.

Thankfully the TV ratings will make this tournament a success. The real story when all is said and done will be the success of PNG and we NEED to capitalise on that and get them regular matches.

this notion that locals have an obligation to support anyone other then their
NRL team
state team
or national team

is hilarious

people support the game through the 3 choices above.
all you hear about this RLWC is nothing but people laughing about Australians & NRL players pretending to be lebanese , Italians , Tongans , Samoans etc
Why did no one turn up in Townsville or Canberra ?
the tournament lacks credibility mainly through eligibility , its a hard sell.
the union world cup has sides full of fat oxygen thieves who wouldn't get a run in a randwick 5th grade side , but they are legit citizens of the countries they are playing for. TBH todays game in Canberra was probs a better on field spectacle then half of the games in the RUWC , but because people believe its not a real world cup they wont bother watching it.

74,000 across 7 games will probably have us on target for 350,000 for the whole tournament.

Next week I can only see the PNG vs Ireland, Tonga vs Samoa and maybe the England vs Lebanon games getting over 14,000.

NZ vs Scotland should get at least 10,000
Aus vs France should get at least 12,000
Doubleheader in Townsville maybe 5-10,000??

What'd you lot think was going to happen, you can't expect people to show up if they don't know the games are being played.

The marketing and promotion of the competition has been woeful, borderline non-existent, the build up to the WC down here has been non-existent, and the attitude that the WC has been treated with by the usual suspects hasn't helped either (however those attitudes impact could have been rendered insignificant with a good marketing campaign and a bit of posturing from the NRL, or the players, or Mal, or anybody really!).

Considering the above it doesn't surprise me whats so ever that the crowds have been so crap.

Most of the RL fans I know down here (paid up members of multiple different clubs most of whom attend games regularly) didn't even realise that there were matches being held here, so you've got to think that if they didn't know then the average public are oblivious, and of the guys that did know most of them considered any internationals a side show not worth the price of the ticket.
