2015 Review - Auburn Warriors

Auburn won 9 and lost 11. Despite the mediocre record there were 13 players who appeared in the NSW Cup in 2015 that also appeared in RMC or SS during the season:

Alex Sorge 5 - (NSW), 1 (SS)
Brad Clark 19 - (NSW), 1 (RMC)
Elias Sukkar - 1 (NSW), 21 (RMC)
George Tsiksikras - 12 (NSW), 11 (RMC)
Gerard McCallum -6 (NSW), 1 (RMC)
Junior Tia kilifi - 1 (NSW), 17 (RMC)
Kayne Brennan - 13 (NSW), 2 (RMC)
Lyndon McGrady - 14 (NSW), 10 (RMC)
Makahesi Makatoa - 15 (NSW), 1 (RMC)
Topou Longi -3 (NSW), 18 (RMC)
Tautalatasi Tasi - 14 (NSW), 6 (RMC)
Vince Rennie - 6 (NSW), 11 (RMC)

Great posting, Rightleftin. Are you going to do one for Hills?

2015 Review - Hills District

Hills has entered the 2016 Ron Massey Cup following 3 years in the Sydney Shield, where they developed from a cellar dweller to losing grand finalist.

Sponsor and coach Paul Griffin had recruited well in 2015, enticing ex NRL prop Brod Wright back to his junior club in addition to several past Wenty players. Griffin also took sponsorship of Concord Burwood Wolves and as CBW had only an RMC team, a partnership saw 11 players appear for both clubs:

Brendan Tarrant, Diamond Charlie, Edric Holmes, Jordan Abouhaider, Jordan Tongahai, Joe Constantine, Joe Mataele, Kava Utiokakama, Kennedy Pettybourne, Mitch Devine, Pat Eni and Scott Williams.

Hills results underperformed during the rounds to lose 7 games but clicked into gear once the finals started. Top try scorers were Scott Hogan 20, Anthony Overton 14, David Baumann 11 and Aaron Weston 11 while prolific points scorer James Boustani added another 228 via 8 tries and 98 goals.

As a matter of course Hills have added several new players to their staff for 2016 to build on a number of the SS team that were RMC standard with recruits including Tim Robinson, another local junior who has played prop in the NRL. Hills will be competitive in 2016 but Griffin will know that depth will be the prime factor in success.

Thanks mate, good post. Probably too much to expect Hills to be pushing for a premiership but I think they will be competitive and a semi spot is not out of the question.

I will be interested when they name their RMC/SS sides this week and Windsor will be a good test first up.

re: Finals System

A top 8 system with 13 sides is woeful. Top 6 or top 5 would be much more prestigious and rewarding of the form sides in the competition.

American Ryan Burroughs tries a reverse Jarryd Hayne at Eels

Date February 27, 2016 - 5:55PM Sun Herald
  • Meet the man trying to do a reverse Jarryd Hayne. American Ryan Burroughs, with just two years of rugby league experience to his credit, has earned himself a contract at Parramatta's feeder club, Wentworthville.

It just so happens that Burroughs - whose dream it is to become the first man to make it from the semi-professional USA Rugby League competition to the NRL - is also a fullback.
1456556121056.jpg
The switch: Ryan Burroughs wants to be as good as Jarryd Hayne. Photo: Wolter Peeters

If you thought Hayne overcame the odds in his transition from the NRL to the NFL, spare a thought for Burroughs. He paid about $140 for the privilege of playing for the North Virginia Eagles - "it covers your bus to the games, socks, shorts, things like that" - and managed to bag 33 tries last season.
The effort earned him a start for the American national team, where two of his Hawks teammates were also contracted to Wentworthville. Upon seeing a highlights reel, Magpies officials offered Burroughs a one-year deal.
"I gave up the life I was living back home, left all of my friends and my job," Burroughs said. "I was going to an apprenticeship trade school as well and I left that. I figured this was a once-in-a-lifetime chance to come here so I took it. I plan on giving it all I've got while I'm out here."
Burroughs has tried his hand at a number of sports, from American football to mixed martial arts. He was tempted to give up on his ambition of playing at a professional level until the intervention of older brother Chris.
"I played one game of rugby league two years ago, it was the last game of the season and I absolutely loved it," he said. "Chris never gave up on me, he encouraged me. He said 'I know what you can do as an athlete, pick something you like and go do it'."
So why rugby league?
"Because it's different," he said. "I don't like being the guy who does ordinary things, it's kind of boring. Rugby [league] is a great game, you meet great people from all over the world, it's a fast-paced game and you keep your fitness up. It's really competitive."
Burroughs has only been in Australia a matter of weeks but has already found himself a job as an air conditioning mechanic, played a couple of trials for the club's Ron Massey Cup side and is hoping he will soon earn selection in his preferred position.
"The wing is boring, fullback is much better," he said.
Hayne has captured the imagination of two nations after earning selection for the San Francisco 49ers. It would be an even more unlikely achievement if Burroughs one day steps into the Eels No.1 jersey vacated by the two-time Dally M medallist.
"I've got to get up to his level," he said. That would be awesome. I've had people already reach out to me and say I've helped inspire them to follow their dreams. If I can open up a gateway for other people, why not?"

In Summary, about 120 players (some played for more than one RMC team) played in both the NSW Cup and RMC/SS comps in 2015.

Perhaps a little surprising is that 27 who played SS also played NSW Cup. The most prominent of the SS players was Vinny Ngaro who played 11 games in NSW Cup and 12 games for Peninsula Seagulls SS. Wests accounted for 8 of these as the Tigers ran a development path in conjunction with the Magpies.

The final count is as follows:

Wenty 22
Mounties 17
Cabramatta 17
Windsor 14
Concord Burwood 13
Auburn 13
Wests 13
Blacktown 6
Guildford 6
Asquith 5
Peninsula 1

Don't know of Brad Clarke (5/8), but I'm surprised Hills went with Gerard MCCallum at fullback and Scott Hogan in the centres. I thought it would be Hogan - fullback, McCallum - 5/8.

I think there are only 5 of 17 who played the S/S Grand Final

and 3 names I recognized in the named S/S team from last year's Shield Squad.

Wonder if Boustani, Wright and Mahoney have retired?

Brad Clarke spent the last 2 years with Canterbury. Prior to that he played for a couple of clubs in the Manly junior league and before that he played with Windsor, Asquith and Wests. Possibly Manly as well.

He was a 5/8 when young but moved to hooker long ago, can also play back row. The listed configuration may not last too long.

I think Boustani may be on the injury list but the others may be gone.

You reckon they might get lapped than?

I like Baumann and Spicer as footballers real goers. Hogan is try scoring machine from fullback, don't know about centre.

Weston being turned from a prop to a barn storming winger last year was a Roy Masters move.

I would have Hills as favourites over that Windsor team. The strength is in the forwards especially with Troy Adams and Moses Manu on the bench. I suspect they will play McCallum and Clark on either side of the ruck and Hogan will be at the back. Walpole can also play 7 or 9.

As you say Hills have elevated 5 from the 2015 SS team plus one from their U/19's and imported 11 players including a few Hills Juniors. The new players are:

Moses Manu, Lionel O'Malley, Josiah Tomasi (Wenty), Brad Clark (Canterbury), Gerard McCallum and Tim Robinson (Newtown), Troy Adams (The Entrance), Sean Walpole (Guildford), Tom Young (Asquith), Eden Syme and Devon Makoare Boyce (Souths NYC)

Should be interesting how they play it, I might get out to Windsor.
