Wests reports
#RMC
Tala Mapesone was the toast of Campbelltown after snatching an intercept with 90 seconds remaining to get Wests home 24-22 against Blacktown.

Six minutes elapsed before Blacktown opened the scoring, Josh Fraser breaking clear through some weak defence on the right side before stepping past the cover defence to put the Workers up 6-0 for 15 minutes before Wests responded through David Harris, who bounced out of three tackles after a stunted attacking raid to stroll through to level the scores.

Both sides were guilty of poor handling, and it cost Wests more dearly as Joshua Tangitau went over adjacent to the posts after some disappointing Magpie defence which was just as poor as Dean Parata took an inside ball to score Blacktown’s third try and give them a 12 point buffer at the halftime break.

Wests came out hard in the second half and were on the board early, Brendan Waters stretching out from close range to register Wests’ second try before Shannon Gallant levelled the scores with his second try of the season off a Dayne Craig grubber which pinballed without Blacktown able to control it.

Wests took the lead for the first time in the 67th minute, a stripping penalty allowing Shannon Gallant to slot the two pointer from 30 metres out, but the lead was short lived as William Butler found space on Blacktown’s left side to touch down out wide and send the Workers back to a two point lead.

Blacktown looked home and had the opportunity to seal the game 90 seconds from time with a four man overlap. However, the single Wests defender, Tala Mapesone, stuck his hand out and took the intercept, racing 35 metres to score and seal the game for the home side in a dramatic finish.

WESTERN SUBURBS 24 (David Harris, Brendan Waters, Shannon Gallant, Tala Mapesone tries; Shannon Gallant 4 from 5) defeated BLACKTOWN 22 (Josh Fraser, Joshua Tangitau, Dean Parata, William Butler tries; Kurt Horton 3 from 3, Alex Seini 0 from 1)
#SYDSHIELD

A four try brace to Jai Doolan covered for some leaky defence as Wests outlasted Blacktown 36-30.

Jai Doolan picked up where he left off last week, going over for the opening try after two minutes before Blacktown responded on six minutes through Cameron Davis, who cut straight through on Blacktown’s right side.

Wests grabbed their second with an opportunistic last tackle dart from Jai Doolan, the Magpies’ rake getting his second halfway through the first half, Daniel Smith responding five minutes later as Daniel Smith finished off a set which was given to Blacktown courtesy of a neat clean up by Daniel Cassone.

Blacktown ended the one for one scoring by grabbing their third try on 31 minutes as Jad Mahmoud was on the end of some hot potato from the Workers, the scores level at 12 at the break.

Wests came out after halftime and repeated their first half opening, Jai Doolan burrowing over for his third after three minutes before Trent Pye went through some soft Blacktown defence to grab one for himself to put Wests ahead by eight, seven minutes into the second half.

Blacktown hit back seven minutes later, Daniel Cassone breaking clear and going 70 metres to score with Josh Leapai putting Blacktown in front on 57 minutes with a bullocking run which left plenty of Wests defenders in his wake.

Wests struck back quickly, Hala Masila charging his way over to put Wests back in front with Trent Pye grabbing his second just six minutes later to put Wests out by eight.

Wests put themselves a dozen clear with seven minutes remaining when Jai Doolan dodged through the line and ran clear to grab his fourth but Blacktown kept touch with a try from a short restart to Taviuni Mariota to bring it back to six points’ difference but Wests held on for their second win of the season.

WESTERN SUBURBS 36 (Jai Doolan 4, Trent Pye 2, Hala Masila tries; Roman Ioelu 2 from 4, Noa Tuitavuki 2 from 3) defeated BLACKTOWN 30 (Cameron Davis, Daniel Smith, Jad Mahmoud, Daniel Cassone, Josh Leapai, Taviuni Mariota tries; Blake Goodman 3 from 6)

Tony Dosen's RMC wrap

The Cabramatta Two Blues stayed in the Ron Massey Cup top four with a controversial 42-26 win over a 12-man St Marys in the Match Of The Round at St Marys Leagues Stadium last Saturday Night.
After the Saints looked irresistible in shooting out to a 12-nil lead inside the first 10 minutes, the match turned in the 26th minute when St Marys five-eighth Adrian Davis was sensationally sent off by referee James Vella for a head-high tackle on Two Blues winger BJ Nathan.
Cabramatta levelled the scores with a converted try to Saxon Ona at 12-all shortly after Davis’ dismissal, and then overpowered a gallant but tiring 12-man defensive unit in the second half to lead 36-16 with 10 minutes left, on the way to a seven-tries-to-five win.
Wentworthville Magpies established themselves as early season Ron Massey Cup favourites with a 32-20 win over Guildford Owls at McCredie Park last Saturday.
The Magpies built their win on an explosive opening with four unanswered tries to lead 22-nil after 25 minutes. Guildford replied with two tries to bring the scores back to 22-10 at the break.
Magpies second-rower Danny Howard completed his hat-trick of tries in the second half as ‘Wenty’ secured a 32-10 lead with 15 minutes left. The Owls scored two late consolation tries in the closing stages.
Defending Premiers Mounties marked their return to Aubrey Keech Reserve for the year with a grinding 24-10 win over a committed Hills District Bulls last Saturday.
Mounties led a tight contest 6-nil at half time, with fullback Mitch Beggs-Mowzcan starring in a Man Of The Match performance. Halfback Chad Porter contributed 16 points for “The Mulga” with two tries and four goals from four attempts.
A dramatic intercept try from Western Suburbs winger Tala Mapesone with 90 seconds remaining saw the Magpies ‘get out of jail’ to pip an unlucky Blacktown Workers 24-22 at Kirkham Park, Camden last Saturday.
The Workers dominated a lacklustre Magpies outfit in the first half. When Workers hooker Dean Parata scored a converted try on the stroke of half time, the visitors took an 18-6 lead into the break.
Converted tries to Magpies number 7 Brendan Waters and fullback Shannon Gallant levelled scores midway through the half, before the home side took the lead for the first time from a Gallant penalty with 13 minutes remaining.
The Workers regained the lead when William Butler scored, before Mapasone found himself defending a four-man overlap on his wing with 90 seconds left. The winger stuck out a hand to snare the intercept from a Blacktown pass and dash 35 metres to score and break Workers’ hearts.
Auburn Warriors moved to second spot on the Ron Massey Cup ladder with a thumping 40-8 win over Concord-Burwood Wolves at Lidcombe Oval last Saturday.
With centre Abraham El Zakhem and winger Ben Dakuwaqa scoring doubles, the Warriors were never in danger against the disappointing Wolves in scoring seven tries in their win.
Finally, 2015 Grand Finalists Asquith Magpies got their first on-field win for the year when they comfortably disposed of a plucky Kingsgrove Colts 48-20 at Norford Park, Sefton last Thursday Night.
Magpies skipper Aaron Groom and winger Sam Buttel bagged doubles as the Magpies scored 10 tries against a Colts outfit boosted by the long-awaited return from injury of Sydney Roosters Holden Cup captain Paul Momirovski in the centres.
Momirovski played strongly in scoring a try and having a hand in two others for the Colts in a welcome sign that his return to the Roosters fold is imminent.
Wentworthville are the sole unbeaten leaders on eight points from four teams, led by Auburn and Mounties on six points. The hapless Colts sit at the bottom of the table on percentages with two points.
The first split round of the season sees just two games played this weekend – both on Sunday.
Wentworthville host Kingsgrove at Ringrose Park while the Match Of The Day sees Hills District Bulls and Guildford play in the annual Nathan Gremmo Memorial Shield game at Crestwood Reserve.

I support the proposition that Hills had a strong SS side last year which is why they made the GF but given that the RMC premiers could only beat Hills RMC by 14 points and you believe the 2015 Hills SS is 20 points better than the 2016 Hills RMC, it follows that Hills SS should have won the RMC last season.

About 6 of the Hills GF squad were Concord Burwood guys that could not make the top 17 and CB were only ahead of Kingsgrove until the last few weeks of the season.

The reason why Hills, East Campbelltown and Peninsula and Belrose have performed strongly is that they are/were playing against the reserve grade teams from the other 10 clubs. It is quite a step up to succeed in the higher grade every week.

Do you know if the assistant coach, Mark Mahoney is related to Daniel Mahoney?

I think that Hills was not only made up the pretty good footballers but, they played for each other which is bloody rare in semi-pro, pro football. If I need to rate the teams across the field, I would rate last year's squad higher.

As for players dropping back from C/B doesn't mean they were inferior to the RMC players just not in the favor of the coaching/selection staff. I don't believe it was 6 either.

I think he is Daniel's old man.

Boustani was never picked for RM Cup at Wenty and played SS the whole time, is he up to the standard? especially if this is his first game for the year?

Boustani has been around a long time. Certainly in say his last 3 years at Wenty he was exclusively SS but he played a game in RMC at 18 and then after 2 years at the Bulldogs came back and played NSW Cup/RMC for a few years.

There were only 5 CBW players in the GF - Edric Holmes (17 games), Kennedy Pettybourne (12), Mitch Devine (12), Joe Mataele (10), Jordan Tongahai (8).

Diamond Charlie (6) and Kava Utoikmanu (5) played in the final series but were excluded from the GF when Harlan Alaalatoa returned from injury.

The interesting thing is that of those 7 players only Tongahai is still with Hills (currently injured) and only Diamond Charlie is back at CBW.

Alaalatoa may return to Hills but he plays as a professional in the French premier competition during the first half of the season.

I know Holmes was supposedly a Concord/Burwood player but he played almost exclusively Hills and did a bloody good job - great in defense and improved in attack during the year, really made the left side of the field solid - was definitely up to RMC standard.

He should have been retained by Hills, that is my point - what happened to him and the 18 year old winger Overton.

Tony Dosen's SS Wrap

The young Guildford Owls upset defending Premiers Wentworthville Magpies 40-30 in the upset of the Sydney Shield round at McCredie Park last Saturday.
On an Easter weekend which again produced an avalanche of tries – 78 in all across the seven matches – it was the performance of Todd McKeown’s charges at home that was the most outstanding win of the round.
With 19-year-old centre James Gammidge scoring his second brace of tries for the year, the Owls made the most of Magpies errors and virtually had the match won with a 36-12 lead at the break after an incredible opening half.
The Owls did enough to hold their lead in the face of a second-half comeback by the Magpies to post eight tries and give the Magpies their second loss for the season.
Belrose Eagles maintained their competition lead with a 42-10 thumping of Auburn Warriors at Lidcombe Oval last Saturday.
With fullback Christian Bate scoring two tries and newcomer Andy Layton playing strongly at hooker, James Mortimer’s men had the game won with a commanding 32-nil half-time lead.
Belrose coasted home against an improved Warriors in the second half to score eight tries to remain unbeaten.
A 77th-minute field goal from half Nick Greenhalgh was enough for St Marys to edge out Cabramatta 19-18 at St Marys Leagues Stadium last Saturday.
In a scrappy game where both sides constantly dropped the ball, Cabramatta led 14-12 at half-time after conceding the first try and looked in some sort of control.
Despite scoring four tries to three, the Two Blues coughed up far too much ball in the mistake-riddled second half – allowing the Saints enough possession and field position in the closing stages for Greenhalgh to snap the winning field goal, then hang on for their win.
Four tries from hooker Jai Doolan saw Western Suburbs bounce back to the winner’s list with a high-scoring 36-30 win over Blacktown Workers at Kirkham Park, Camden last Saturday.
The former winger, now hooker, bagged the first two of his four tries to keep scores level at 12-all at half-time. Doolan then snared his third and fourth tries in the second half to give Wests a match-winning 36-24 with seven minutes left. Magpies back rower Trent Pye also got two tries.
Doolan is now the leading try scorer in the Sydney Shield with nine majors in the first four games of the year.
Mounties made a statement to the rest of the competition with a remarkable 76-8 annihilation of Hills District Bulls at Aubrey Keech Reserve last Saturday.
The home side started strongly enough and led 24-4 at half time before unleashing nine tries at more than a point a minute in the second half on the shell-shocked Bulls. Winger Maile Li got a hat-trick for Mounties, with Rusty Bristow, PJ Lose and Vinny Ngaro all bagging doubles in the 13-try romp.
In action last Thursday Night, East Campbelltown Eagles maintained their top four place with a 34-22 win over Windsor Wolves at Windsor Sports Complex.
The Eagles set up their win with four first-half tries to lead 24-4 at the break. Eagles winger Craig Moustakas got two tries as East Campbelltown withstood a Windsor comeback of sorts in the second half to secure their win.
Finally, the Peninsula Seagulls bounced back to winning ways with a 64-nil thrashing of Asquith at Forestville Oval in last Thursday Night’s other game.
In nothing more than a training drill at times, the Seagulls led 40-nil at half-time and posted 11 unanswered tries.
Jake Pickering, Richie Goodwin and Barry McGrady all got doubles in the rout of the hapless Magpies.
Belrose remain the sole leaders on eight points after four rounds, with Mounties and East Campbelltown leading four teams giving chase on six points. Windsor, Blacktown and Asquith remain at the bottom of the ladder as the three winless teams.
The first split round of the season sees only three games this weekend, with all games set for Sunday.
Wentworthville host Peninsula Seagulls at Ringrose Park as the best match on the day, while East Campbelltown host Auburn at Waminda Oval and Hills District Bulls square off with Guildford at Crestwood Reserve.

Hugely competitive game at Ringrose Park today in the RMC. Wenty snatching it late by 84-4 against Kingsgrove. The joke continues.

The Colts finished strongly. It was 72-0 after 63 minutes but Wenty could not go on with it so Wests in 2013 remain the only team to bring up the century. Maybe Mounties can crack it.

A good comeback by Hills after their 76-8 loss to Mounties last week, with Johnson snaring a rare 5 tries. Wenty have now lost 3 out of 5, they are no longer the force at this level.

Hills managed to grab defeat from the jaws of victory. After running up a 16-0 lead before Guildford touched the ball they conceded Cerruto's 2nd try with 22 seconds left on the clock. Hills failed to get a kick away at the end of their last set giving Guildford the opportunity.

Shackleton was a powerhouse. With him and Ryan having nearly 200 games in NRL and Super League between them it adds a lot of credibility to the Guildford pack. McCallum seems to be the source of most of the Hills attack.

North Sydney sent down Winstone Asotasi and Tulsa Saumamao to Hills while Aaron Weston returned from injury to replace another Norths player Makaore Boyce, who dropped back to SS.

Tough loss for Hills, they've lost a few close ones. Shackleton and Ryan are both very good players at this level.

Who were Hills best for SS and RM? How did Boustani go first game back?

McCallum, Young and Walker combined beautifully in all 3 tries in the first 12 minutes. Asotasi and Saumanao, were strong in the forwards.

Boustani linked OK. He went off 15 minutes from the end with an ankle. I thought that Falcone didn't provide much but late in the game he grubbered and regathered to set up the try that put Hills back in front.

I only saw the second half in SS. Clearly Johnson had an incredible game but they establish the base in the middle where Hutch and Manu go for the full 80 minutes.

Hills will need to turn their season around in the next game against Cabra if memory serves me correct.

If not, it could be a long season but they have Kingsgrove in the following match, so either 3 from 7 or 2 from 7.

It is a long way back if it is 2 from 7, but than again 8 teams out of 13 make the semis.

Yeah I wouldn't worry about making the final 8 until deep into the season. Last season Burwood and Wests were both horrendous during the year, and both of them left their sprint until the very end so unfortunately one of them had to miss out. It came down ultimately to Guildford defeating Mounties in that final round, which was close to upset of the season, which left Wests outside the 8 in disappointing circumstances.

I remember watching that bottom spot very closely, because I think we would have had a far more exciting finals series had the two form teams of the comp both come in hot. Of course as it ended up, Burwood were flogged by Blacktown in week 1, the latter then flogged by Asquith in week 2. Would have been interesting to see how Wests could have gone to throw a spanner in the mix.
