Mounties saw Alofi Mataele, Rodney Coates, Rusty Bristow Jarrod Brackenhofer from the originally named RMC side elevated to NSW Cup today but when you can bring 2 replacements that have played NRL plus the 2016 Rookie winner it demonstrates Mounties' depth. Wests bounced back from a sub par performance against Blacktown last week

Auburn were also impacted with changes to the NSW Cup side with Bergamin and Carr playing the Warriors in NZ and Moujalli also travelling as the extra man. The omission of the two guys at the back allowed Justin Gasovski to come into the side and he contributed 3 tries. Gasovski played 15 games for Kingsgrove last year and scored 1 try in the season playing with a competitive team creates the opportunity to develop your skills. There were 13 tries in the game but only 4 goals.

It is a bit of farce that only 8 of the 10 teams play each week but the exclusion of the teams that were short of RMC standard means that blowouts may be limited in 2017. After 6 games the largest margin is 14 points.

It looks like Wests will be the whipping boys this year.

Guildford were belted 8 tries to 1 last week by Asquith but turned it around today.

St Marys will have trouble replicating this result. After the wash out in RMC last week and a bye today St Marys decided to play 12 of the 18 named in RMC last week. With the player caps for RMC and SS being identical they could have played the entire RMC team. Asquith can ignore the result - Jeremy Marshall played for them today, which brings the number of ex Peninsula players in the Asquith side to 5 - Jake Pickeing, Enoka Time, Ryan Wheeler and Vinny Ngaro.

Moorebank led Belrose 18-2 after half time but the older heads prevailed as the Eagles stormed home.

Hills continued the strong form they showed in beating Wenty last week by taking out the defending premiers.

A couple of Kingsgrove boys have spots in SS sides - Jake Steadman with Mounties and Nick Cornish with Wenty.

If you knew what you were on about rather than copy/pasting to pass off as contributing you'd know that was in the Sydney Shield, not RMC (22-all draw by the way). I'd expect nothing less from a hack who thinks he's all that but probably hasn't been to a footy ground (well, in the real code anyway).

I hope every team fields a strengthened SS team against Asquith. They deserve it. They are the only team in shield with a leagues club. The way they have recruited after making the grand final is atrocious. With a decent coach they should be top 3-4 every year

While there are only 6 Manly players in the Blacktown NSW Cup team and they are yet to register a winning result, the number of players aiming for the pathway ensures that Blacktown will have a strong RMC side.

So 2 wins for Blacktown means they only need to win 1 more game out of their final 16 spread over 23 weeks to make the NSWRL version of "finals" but they have few byes before they get back on the field. It will be interesting to see how many drop back to SS for the Asquith game.

Yep, and happy to switch my support. I'm happy to switch all support from Cabra to whoever is playing Cabra in that week. I won't get into details of what happened, but I'll give an overview.

As established in last year's thread, I was the manager for the Shield at Cabra, and year before I joined mid-year as the Assistant Manager of both Shield and Massey.

Last year, The club let the RMC Manager walk all over us, and pretty much let him get rid of the people who put in all their spare time (me and another bloke), and bring in his mates to drink after training and games. Constantly threatening us with our jobs if we didn't do it, I don't think he did anything all year except for yell and drink cans of XXXX. The head coach wouldn't step in either to stop this from happening.

The night before I was removed, the coaches had a meeting and apparently the RMC manager showed up randomly. The next morning at 9:15am, I get told from the RMC manager that "we want someone more footy orientated" and pretty much offered me the role of Ground Announcer. From Manager to Ground Announcer, how low of a blow is that. Obviously I said no.

Club never stood up for me or the other bloke. They just let it happen, and left us with nowhere to go. I was stupid to join their Junior Committee (which I've since resigned)

So now me and the other guy removed are waiting for an opening at another club somewhere, that appreciates time and effort put into Rugby League. The most sad thing, is that the NRL and NSWRL are big on volunteers, but they can't help anything that happens like this.

Hills Bulls win Sydney Shield and Ron Massey Cup round one against Wentworthville Magpies

The Hills Bulls have had a perfect start to the rugby league season with a pair of wins over the Wentworthville Magpies.

On the road at Ringrose Park, the Bulls claimed a 24-16 victory in the Sydney Shield before backing up with an 18-8 win in the Ron Massey fixture.

Hills Bulls Ron Massey Cup coach Trevor Schodel said it was a great start to the season for the club.

“To have a few grades winning, it was pretty good work for the Hills boys,” he said. “But I tell the boys we can’t get over excited about it.”

With new Ron Massey Cup recruit and former NRL star Feleti Mateo pulling out with a calf injury during warm up, Schodel said the side handled the game well.

It was a busy day for lock Thomas Eisenhuth who scored a hat-trick in the Sydney Shield and backed up in the Ron Massey to score his fourth for the day.

Eisenhuth, who played one NRL game with the Penrith Panthers in 2012, is a Ron Massey Cup regular and was forced into Sydney Shield due to talent restrictions in the competition.

“He had the option to sit out but what we’re implementing at Hills is a club first, then the team and then the individual and he took that on board,” Schodel said.

“He was a standout in the Shield and if he wasn’t there, I think it would have been a different scoreline.”

This weekend, Hills have a bye in Ron Massey action, while the Sydney Shield team play East Campbelltown at Waminda Oval.

NSWRL SS Wrap

A converted try to Hills District Bulls fullback James Horvat with nine minutes remaining propelled the Hills District Bulls to a thrilling 20-18 win over defending premiers East Campbelltown in the Sydney Shield ‘match of the round’ at Waminda Oval last Saturday evening.

Played in warm temperatures despite the twilight 6pm kickoff, the match was a thrilling contest to start the Eagles’ title defence.

The Eagles got off to the perfect start when five-eighth Brett Lahey got the opening try in the fourth minute.

However, the Bulls meant business and replied quickly to take a 10-6 lead inside 15 minutes through tries to Troy Black and Danyon Barnes to set the tone for the rest of the contest.

Grant Lahey scored in the 20th minute to give the Eagles a tight 12-10 half-time lead.

The Eagles looked to have the upper hand when Chris Standing got their third try 10 minutes second half to extend the home side’s lead out to 18-10.

The Bulls then set up a grandstand finish when Barnes completed his second try with just on 20 minutes left to get the visitors back to within four points.

Both sides had chances until Horvat scored and converted his own try to give the Bulls the lead – a lead that they held on to in a frantic final 10 minutes to remain unbeaten in two starts.

The Belrose Eagles also left it until late in the other Sydney Shield thriller played last Saturday – coming from 18-2 down early in the second half to score three tries in the last 20 minutes to pip the Moorebank Rams 20-18 at Hammondville Oval.

In a tight and at times scrappy first half, the Rams finally opened the scoring seven minutes from the break when centre Dalton Smith got the opening try. Belrose second rower Andrew Layton landed a penalty goal on the stroke of halftime to get the Eagles on the board at 6-2 down at the break.

Moorebank came out on fire to start the second half with a Sam Atuau double to blow the Rams lead out to 18-2 10 minutes into the second half.

As has been the case often with Belrose, the Eagles worked their way back into the game as the second half wore on. Charles Buttrose got their first try with 20 minutes left, before classy half Luke Vescio brought the visitors within striking distance with eight minutes left.

Former Peninsula Seagulls hooker Chris Williams levelled the scores with six minutes left with a try on debut for the Eagles for Layton to convert and Belrose to hit the front at 20-18. It was a lead that Belrose clung on to in the face of late desperate Moorebank attack to secure their win.

Saturday’s other matches were all one-sided blowouts.

The Asquith Mapgies were brought back to earth with a thud when they were thrashed 64-14 by a classy St Marys outfit at St Marys Leagues Stadium.

Alex Nicholls-O’Neill opened the scoring in the fourth minute to give Asquith an early 4-nil lead – but that was as far as the visitors got for the rest of the day.

With Adrian Davis tuning up for the Saints’ Ron Massey Cup Grand Final rematch with Mounties with two tries and 10 goals from 11 attempts for a personal tally of 28 points, the Saints were far too strong – jumping out to a 36-8 half time lead.

The Saints went on with the job in the second half to score 11 tries to three – with winger Jesse Jackson completing a hat ttick.

The Guildford Owls turned around their first round loss to Asuqith with a resounding 62-10 trouncing of Cabramatta at McCredie Park.

With Owls five eighth Nautu’a Masima completing a personal best five tries, and half back Todd Sapienza completing a double, the Owls ran in 12 tries to two against the shell shocked Two Blues.

2016 Shield Runners Up Mounties returned to their powerful best when they belted the hapless Western Suburbs 64-nil at Aubrey Keech Reserve last Saturday.

The young Magpies stood up to Mounties early until Brad Speechley scored first try in the 13 the minute – before the class of the Mulga became too much as the match went on.

Mounties led 24-nil before scoring at a point a minute in the second half – with Maile Li and Jake Ellul completing doubles and Jake Steadman having a day out with a try and 10 goals from 11 attempts for a personal tally of 24 points.

Finally, the Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles stayed unbeaten with a hard fought 36-28 win over Wentworthville at Laybutt Fields last Sunday.

IN a nip and tuck try for try contest played in oppressive conditions, Blacktown got an early jump on the Magpies to lead 18-nil after 25 minutes with tries to Kelepi Manu, Braeden Batiste and Jake Attard.

Wenty struck back with three tries of their own – through Josh Minhinnick, Ayden Carling and Jermaine Mati-Leifi to be only down 18-16 at the break.

In a thrilling second half, Shane Kiel extended the Blacktown lead only for Wenty to hit the front with under 15 minuts left after Minhinnick and Mati-Leifi completed their doubles.

However, Blacktown steadied in the closing stages - with Andrew Pritchard scoring the match sealing try with under three minutes left to give the home side a perfect two wins from two starts to kick off their season.

Mounties, Blacktown and the Bulls share the lead as the only teams with a two from two record after the first fortnight of matches.

This weekend sees five games on Saturday and one match on Sunday – with the Mounties clash with St Marys on Saturday at Aubrey Keech Reserve the pick of the matches.
