Warea in the top 50 is farcical.......isnt he a manly reserve grader that got a game for the kiwis???

On Cronk.....very solid player in the Orford mode, but in no way would I say he is better than Bunji, thats a huge call.

dunno i think there about the same
benji is good but his form is to up and down

JWH was almost NZ's best in the 4 Nations. Petro is IMO past his best. Consistent, but past his best.

If I was picking a team, I would go with JWH. Except if I took lessons off the NSW selectors.
JWH had 3 good games, big deal, if I remember correctly Frank Paul Nuuasala was pretty impressive too, hardly makes him better than Petero.
Don't you remember what happened last time someone said petero was past his best?

As for Benji and Cronk, benji is more brilliant but I'd rather Cronk anyday. Great halfbacks are rare and Cronk is one of only 3 or 4 in the comp. Benji is an individual, great talent but also inconsistent and lacks the kicking game and organisational skills of someone like Cronk. When you look at things in perspective, one is a dual premiership winning halfback who's played in the past 4 GF and been an integral part of the storm team, the other hasn't played finals football for 4 years

In between meetings I hastily compiled a list of 50 current players. I'm pretty happy with that list, although the rankings are a bit rugged (and, of course, there is always the chance I've totally forgotten a guy or two).

In my list I aimed for a good cross-section of players in different positions. I think is important since the different roles various positions play in a team can make it like comparing apples and oranges (which was part of the difficulty of ranking). So generally, my list will have who I think are the best players in their given positions. Admittedly, five-eights are a little over represented in my list.

I also considered the importance of these individuals to their respective teams, e.g. Aaron Payne mightn't be rated so highly if he wasn't so vital to the success of the Cowboys.

My list is primarily based on 2009, with an eye to what I think will happen in 2010, so it's not surprising that the three bottom teams from last year have the fewest representatives. The Warriors are the only team that I haven't listed a single player from in the 50 (below is some clarification).

I didn't blindly or over-enthusiastically rate rookies. Rising stars who will be rated highly if they perform consistently at the standard they have set early in their careers include Dugan, Idris, D Mortimer, Locke, Snowden, D Taylor, Croker.

Then there are guys who might have made my list if not for slight question marks over them – Burgess (will he adapt to NRL), T Carney (will he behave), Tahu (will he return from union as good as when he left), Tuqiri (will he return from union as good as when he left), M Bowen (will he bounce back from injury), Tate (will he bounce back from injury), A Minichello (will he bounce back from injury), Price (will age catch up to him).

Without further ado, here's my ranked list ...

1. Hayne
2. Inglis
3. Thurston
4. Prince
5. Smith
6. Lockyer (but how long will his body hold out)
7. Slater
8. Civoniceva
9. Hindmarsh
10. Gallen
11. Farah
12. Soward
13. Marshall
14. Folau
15. Moi Moi
16. Watmough
17. Gidley
18. Ennis
19. Cronk
20. Tuiaki
21. Kimmorley
22. Sutton
23. Thaiday
24. Lewis
25. Campese
26. Hodges
27. Bird (I'm more confident that he'll stay out of trouble than Carney)

28. Hannant
29. Blair
30. Mateo
31. Tongue
32. Asotasi
33. Jennings
34. Creagh
35. B Stewart
36. Lyon
37. Barrett
38. Mullen
39. Luke
40. G Stewart
41. Ellis
42. Josh Morris
43. B Morris
44. Patten
45. Anasta
46. Grothe
47. A Payne
48. P Campbell
49. Merritt
50. Waterhouse

Feel free to slam me ... but I reckon my list (while undoubtedly flawed) is better than the pile Rothfield has started serving up with this Part 1.

Brett stewart is better than alan tongue, from my breif skim thats all I saw.

captain of his country fair enough, though Adam Blair is vice captain, he would be about 5th in line for captaincy at the Storm. Benji won a comp, fair enough but that was a good five years ago and that was when he was a 5/8th playing outside a top shelf halfback. Benji himself at halfback has failed misrably.

Rothfield is the biggest goose involved in anyway, shape or form with Rugby League in the current day. He shouldn't even be working for a League magazine in Hong Kong. He is trash and every word he speaks is sh*t.

=1. Greg Inglis & Jarryd Hayne

Though I didn't put much thought into it at all. If I spent time revising I don't think I'd move that much. The top 10 are all pretty much even on their best days except for Inglis and Hayne. Other guys like Brett Stewart would be higher if they played more recently. So there is a bit of reasoning behind it.

Slight revision?

He'll be higher than that after the year ends.

Not the point. Neither Carney or Bird should be on the list, although at least Bird has some form via the ESL. If he is going to do a list on who he believes the best 50 will be this season ..then state it!

What he was only really notice in the games from round 18-25

half a game of the 1st final. 2nd final and prem final

11 games of 26

thats not even half a season , doesnt really deserve to be in the top 10 looking at the majority of opposition he faced through that period

if anyone is fair dinkium they should look at the whole year not less then half a season

*sigh*. Gaba, you wouldn't have your current Hayne phobia if you had used proper gunsights.

I would have snuck Thaiday in there for one of the over-abundance of finishers.

Not for mine. Was not that consistent last year. Personally I would have given some consideration to someone like Nick Kenny though. The props seem to be royally rorted in this list. Put it this way if I were to build a team, I'd want a prop first and foremost.
