One of the many text messages I have received since 11.00am Wednesday was from a mate late yesterday who simply asked "How's your best player going to go next season?"

My response "Hoppa will go well with another pre-season under his belt".

Their is no "I" in team and there is no Hayne in Parramatta.
Time to move on and focus on who we do have at the club for 2015 and support those merkins in their bid to improve on season 2014, get us into the finals and give it a shake for the first time since 2009.

My seven year old daughter summed it up nicely the other night when I broke the news to her about Hayne (her favourite player) leaving. "That's okay Daddy. Semi is my new favourite and Chrissy is now my second favourite".

For me and mine, Parramatta is bigger than any one player, no matter how good they are and how loved they are.

Go the Eels!!

You will have the same discussion this time next year when Sandow won't be offered another contract by the club.

Whether it's about Sandow next year, Semi in 3 years or someone else at any other time, I have no doubt I will again have this conversation with her and that's okay.

She has been taught to support the Eels and who ever wears the jersey at any given time which is what loyalty to a football team is all about.

Great to hear mate, sounds like she has a thick skin and she will need it following this club.

For what it's worth:

1. Norman
2. Semi
3. Hoppa
4. Morgan
5. Champion
6. Matterson
7. Sandow

8. Mannah
9. Peats (CAPTAIN)
10. Jnr
11. Gower
12. Tepai
13. Edwards

14. IDG
15. Mau
16. Terepo
17. Lussick

The major problem is our backrowers don't play 80 minutes, most good clubs have 2 of their 3 backrowers playing 80 meaning they can rotate their props more often ensuring metres are made up the centre unless we can train their bodies like Graham and Toleman who can play longer minutes cause of their body.

That backline is chock full of mediocrity - plodders who only bazal and the parramatta recruiters think are passable.

If Ryan Morgan plays first grade it is a terrible sign.

In that side he would actually be one of the better players.

It's an embarrassment that we have signed and retained some of those blokes, hayne or no hayne.

I think the major plodder in this discussion is you. Our backline will have an Origin rep, the reigning winger of the year, and a 21 year old who has already made a superleague dream team as one of the beast centres in the competition. Is it a superstar backline? Or course not. It would be nice to have superstars in every position and not have to rely heavily on fringe players like Morgan and Robinson. But it's what we have and it's not awful. Plenty of tries in it given decent ball.

But I expect no more than abject pessimism on here. The simple fact is that without Hayne we're a middle of the road roster like loads of others. Everything else will depend a lot on attitude. Hopefully the players aren't fatalistic plodders like the fans hey? Otherwise we will be last.

It's a decent side. An incredibly young side that will be on the wrong side of some flogging again next year but it's what we will have to endure. Tepai and Ma'u are capable of eighty minutes but are inexperienced in that area and will have to shoulder a lot of the responsibility defensively alongside Peats. If Watmough is added to that group it will certainly stiffen the middle and add some much needed experience.

We should be looking to sign another prop alongside Watmough. The two grand final sides showed how important a potent pack can be.

Matterson has the size and skill to play first grade.

I'm happy to cop floggings providing we are giving the kids a chance.

Unless someone becomes available between now and June 30, we will have to give the kids a chance. As for the floggings.... Some will, many won't. The work that has been done to improve membership will unfortunately be undone. The crowd situation will hit hard IMO.

What concerns me is the impact this will have on recruitment. Especially given quite a few players are off contract at the end of next year. With no Hayne, a major draw card for recruitment is gone. I worry to if our young blokes will be so excited about being on the end of floggings as well.

We will have ample amounts of cash with both Hoppa, Sandow, Lussick, Allgood, Morgan and (Hayne) all off contract end of 2015 plus others.

No excuses but to pick up one or two good signings.

Negative impacts on memberships, crowd figures, recruitment and the morale of young and up coming players pales into insignificance when weighed up against the action and desires of someone who is "just a kid with a dream".

We've had cash in the past as have plenty of clubs. If the results aren't there though it often means the good players won't come. This has set our chances of recruitment and retention back.
