Round 1 results

Great results overnight. The Quins game in particular. Also, notice all three games so far have been won by no more than 8 points. That makes for good footy and hopefully it will continue. Can't wait to see the Wigan/Wire game sometime at the end of the week.

A bit hard to score a lot of points when your playing in snow and hail... a great spectacle, and massive crowd in these conditions at the JJB - enjoy the replay when the tape arrives down under.

I'm pleasantly surprised by Quins effort too, haven't seen any of this match yet but maybe competition this season will be a lot closer than seemed likely on first glance?

Wow, report on Sky just said Quins playing "into the conditions" in the first half but came out with the lead. Apparently Rinaldi was sin-binned on half-time for Harlequins, but they still didn't surrender their advantage. Sounds liek a great effort there.

I've put these games up on RLP already!

St. Helens v. Harlequins
Wigan v. Warrington

Does anybody know where I can reliably source who captains each side in each game? I'm going to be visiting England in the middle of this year and I'm going to check out the magazines while I'm there, but straight results and stats info on the ESL on the net can be very annoyingly sparse.

Wigan deserve everything they get. Just seven British players for a club like that is a disgrace.

 wish i saw that. That's so good how you guys get it live, and all at the comfortable time of 9am. I wish it was live here, even if it is at 6/7am, i don't care. Hope you appreciate it.

Azkatro, the captains for these matches were:
Long
Purdham
O'loughlin
Briers

Not really. If a team's usual captain is going to be out, you can usually find reference to who will be filling the role in stories during the week in the lead-up to the match. If you're just trying to find out at the time of the match off game stats etc it can be tricky. Print weeklies will usually carry the information, but only after the event, you can get electronic subscriptions to at least one of the two weekly league newspapers.

Another game, another low scoring thriller. Can't wait to see this one too.

Hull KR 14 Wakefield 9 at Craven Park. Crowd: 7154. Last minute try to Ben Cockayne.

Sunday's results:

Salford 26 - 30 Leeds
Bradford 18 - 14 Huddersfield
Hull FC 10 - 10 Catalan Dragons

I see the biggest result of the weekend in terms of difference between the two came at Knowsley Road. Shocking scenes.

Super League must be fixed. Thats all I can suggest.;-)

Saints put in the worst performance I have ever seen from a professional side on Friday night, forget the conditions they were NOT a factor. Sure it was snowing, but it was firm underfoot and Saints made no yardage as their lazy pack was pushed back by Quins harder working unit. No go forward, awful positional kicking and on the few occasions where they were gifted teritory by penalties the last tackle option was non existant. There was only one move put on all night between the halves and the backs, which resulted in Gidley's try, other than that a lifeless night.

Quins in reality weren't much better but after accepting two gift wrapped tries didn't need to be. Their sublime kicking game won it for them, constantly leaving Saints the full pitch to go after a complete set and Saints weren't physically or mentally up for that challenge. A comfortable opening win for Quins.

Saints game against Wakefield now looks incredibly intruiging. I have doubts as to whether the pack can lay enough of a platform for the backs to score many points this season.
I can see a season of tough, hard fought games for Saints, the domination of last season seems a long way away now.

FG

What is up with Maurie Faasavalu this season ?
so far he hasn't looked half as good as last year.

Hooper is just awful, he offers nothing in attack or defence

To be honest I thought he was one of the best of a bad bunch on Friday. I have heard that Maurie has been put through one hell of a pre-season programme intended to increase his stamina, which at this stage of the season is manifesting itself as a lack of energy. I think the benefit of the pre-season work will come further into the season.

What a first weekend.
Champions beaten, grand finalists held to a draw by the wooden spooners and every game was close. I know the conditions probably played a part but when was the last time a single round was so close? Margins were - 6, 8, 8, 4, 4, 0.
Crowds also good - 21,693; 7,515; 7,154; 12,130; 12,673; 8,072. Total: 69,237. Average for round 1: 11,540. Season total: 78,449. Season average: 11,207.

I think it'll be reassuring to the other clubs that St Helens aren't quite so invincible this year. If a few more clubs can knock them off over the next month or so it'll throw the competition right open.

Great attendances, every club pulled their weight except St Helens, lets hope that improves during the season.

The true test will come next week some of the less supported clubs host matches.

Promising that Catalans managed an away draw. I know it won't effect relegation, but if they keep that type of result up then they'll avoid bottom place this year.

Agree jed

I just get the feeling that key Saints players like Long and Cunningham seem to have lost a bit of zip, maybe thats the conditions though.
