No room at the stadiums: clubs struggle to seat opposing views
Michael Chammas
February 22, 2012

THE Wests Tigers will open Leichhardt Oval to Cronulla fans in round one, but the NRL won't force clubs to allocate opposition seating if their membership numbers exceed stadium capacity in future.

Tigers officials agreed yesterday to give both Cronulla and Tigers members first crack at buying the remaining 9000 tickets for the round one Sunday afternoon showdown at Leichhardt Oval.

The Tigers contacted Cronulla yesterday and agreed to put the remaining tickets on sale from 9am tomorrow in a three-hour window.

ame to home-member-only affairs just yet, it is a prospect facing the Tigers, Dragons, Eels, Sea Eagles, Panthers and Sharks, as their numbers continue growing towards the capacity of their suburban grounds.

The NRL is tipped to surpass 200,000 club members before the start of the season, but the rapid growth in numbers, already up 10 per cent on last year, is casting a dark cloud over the long-term future of the competition's boutique suburban grounds.

The Tigers' Leichhardt Oval and St George Illawarra's WIN Jubilee Oval are the two grounds most likely to become the first membership-exclusive in the NRL if their memberships continue to increase at the rate they have been.

Cronulla's chairman, Damian Irvine, said it was important opposition members aren't ignored in the future.

''I don't think there should ever be a situation where only the members of home fans get in - absolutely not,'' Irvine said.

''There's not a sport in the world that does that and even Old Trafford, where tickets are sold out months in advance on some occasions, there is still always an allocation for opposition members.

''I'm all for members having first crack, whether that be for finals or a high demand game. But you can't treat members with disdain for a big blockbuster match then expect them to come and support you when it's a quiet, wet night in Penrith or Campbelltown.''

Most clubs in the NRL are up on the number of members registered at the corresponding time last year.

But where the Dragons and Tigers differ from most clubs is their multi-venue packages, with separate Kogarah-Wollongong and Leichhardt-Campbelltown memberships offered to the respective fans.

While Irvine is expecting Sharks fans to purchase a large portion of the members-only tickets available tomorrow morning, he said it would benefit rugby league in future if all clubs designated a section of the ground for supporters of opposition clubs.

''I'm a big advocate for having an away-supporters allocation and area,'' he said.

''I think there is plenty of pluses of having those at all grounds, certainly from an operational point of view it's great for security but more so for atmosphere as well.

''It's certainly something that European football does very well. If you've got a percentage of away supporters, and let's use Leichhardt as an example, it's great to have the Sharks fans all together wherever possible.

''The atmosphere for that is fantastic and makes for good theatre, too.''

Voice of reason that Irvine saying that you can't just choose to lock fans out for some games and have them come back for others. One of the great things about the NRL is that even for the GF anyone who wants a ticket can get one (something that doesn't happen in the AFL). The only game where tix are hard to get is probably Bris origin but even then there are some floating around.

He is wrong though about segregating supporters. It is done in Europe because of security concerns. Fortunately in Australia whilst we have good natured banter it rarely spills over to violence.

supporters probably feel better seated together .

It is still better in terms of atmosphere etc. I think it is a good idea.

Anyway, I seriously think some people jumped the gun here. The reality is that we are many years away from talking about the Tigers having enough season ticket holders to fill an 18,000 seat stadium. The club currently only has about 8000 season ticket holders.

MightySharks: I think what should be done is that the away ticket allotment should be sold by the away club. In this case the Tigers give the Sharks X amount of tickets, and the Sharks sell them. Makes it easier to prove membership etc. This is how it is done in Europe.

I wonder if by making those tix $65 and what he has said in the press has actually hindered ticket sales?

If I was a fence sitting tigers fan ...no way would I pay $65 for a game of footy.

BTW
I think the sharkies are gonna get their arses handed to them in this game.
I have a bad feeling.
Unless BM gets carried off in the first 5 mins we could get pumped harderer than sharks forum members missus's after a trial game win.

ha

The tigers always kill us. Any team who has quick play the balls and a hooker who runs generally do. It is normally a safe bet to go on Farah for last try scorer

I disagree that segregating supporters enhances atmosphere. What about groups that have fans of both teams? Where do neutral fans sit.

Also away areas are normally the worst viewing in the stadium. If I am going to do a minimum 600km round trip to watch my team I would rather pay for the best seats. Have a look a look at the a league. The opposition supporters are in the worst spot in less than half full stadiums.

I am happy to socialise with fans of other teams. I went to the NRL members forum last year and a lunchtime all of the fans just sat in their little groups. Us three raiders fans deliberately came over and asked to join the sharks fans and we had lunch together. I think you guys were a bit surprised at first but we ended up having a great lunch and David gallop came over and joined us. That is what the game is all about.

At the end of the day we are all the same. RL fans that love to support the game and our teams. If we lived in different places or grew up in different families we could just as easily be in different colours.

Have both. Opposition supporters should be allowed to sit virtually anywhere but they should also have a spot where they all can congregate, particularly for a sold out game where there would be no large patches of grass available.

I think if the NRL is serious they should have a designated spot at everyground for the Red V. Say if the Tiges were playing at Leichardt then the Red V could have a spot at say .... Belmore Oval on the same day.

It would would be in the games interests and the betterment of the code if those morons were kept well away from the general rugby league public.

Absolutely disgraceful. The NRL should do something about this. You can't "lock out" away supporters. It doesn't happen in any sport in the world. Even old trafford which sells out years in advance still has to have an away supporter allowance.

Then this...

Something to tell us Newman?
