If Sione Finau misses a starting wing spot there will be an outcry from us fans over clear evidence Flanno is playing favorites. We have already had one of those coaches and he copped plenty of flack over that policy. Flanno risks losing credibility and support.
Well, Flanno picked him in the trials n all and he did really well and no one in here was demanding anything before that, so I’d say you’re overreacting a bit.

Cheers for that mate.

I agree he’s brilliant, but he’s still too flawed at this stage. Hence bringing in Gutherson.

I dunno about the Barba comparison. He won the Dally M in 2012. Does Tyrell have that in him over a season? I mean the consistency to do it.

I’d love it if he did.

For me, if you looked at Tyrell’s plus/minus score for minutes played (like the metric they use in the NBA), I’d guess he’d be too close to neutral or negative over a period of time.

There are plenty if brilliant players who fall short because their flaws outweigh it and that gets shown up badly in the NRL.

Nothing against the guy at all. I just see him more a Bevan French/ Matt Duffy / Jai Field than a Barba or a Hammer type.

Absolutely brilliant, but just a shandy off the NRL due to flaws that will be exploited.

Anyway, here’s hoping he improves to the point he breaks out and becomes a superstar.
the part in bold is such a flawed stat - considering he essentially played 80 mins in most games, with the overall team doing so poorly his +/- would be skewed. Don't think that metric works in Rugby League unfortunately

I don't even necessarily disagree that his overall output would be neutral at best, but there's no real way of actually quantifying it

Of course he is a Flanno favorite. Only reason I can see how he steps directly into one wing spot without a battle like the others. Blind Freddie can see Finau should have been the one to walk into that spot, with MF, CT and Sloan duking it for the other.
Without a battle?

Id say it’s been assessed over the pre season.

I don’t know if Flanno’s pre seasons are easy or provide free rides for anyone, but I’d guess not.

yeah, maybe. I think Sloan would've had that spot in the pre season, had he been fully fit. It will definitely be hard to leave Finau out now though

Yeah agree, was just trying to use something as a comparison.

I think Sloan is down the depth chart and I honestly don’t see the fascination with him.

is it because he looks good when things come off?
I think it's because he's objectively talented and has shown that by scoring some cracking tries that nobody else in our squad could possibly do (think sharks coast to coast tries vs warriors sharks, step inside suallii vs roosters, kick fake and burning papi vs storm). His balance, speed and attacking instinct is elite - there's a reason why blokes like Gutho are describing him as a generational talent. The knock has been toughness, physicality and consistency. He's been brutally exposed at the back and also missed two pre-seasons on the bounce. I digress tho - the above is "why" as you asked.

Great post. Cheers Phil.

I agree in all you’ve said. He has to meet the requirements of where you’ve pointed out he’s been exposed, as in the NRL, they are career killers.
If he meets them, then he could be anything.

This post is so weirdly and pointlessly negative towards the coach at a time when almost all fans are excited about the progress we've made and Flanagan's coaching ability.

I like this team.

1. Gutho
2. Sloan (not sure if Tuipolotu will be ready)
3. Suli
4. Holmes
5. Finau
6. Flanagan
7. Ilias
8. Toby Couchman
9. Cook
10. Guler
11. Leilua
12. Su'A
13. De Belin
14. Liddle
15. Klemmer (if we've got him yet)
16. Ryan Couchman
17. Loko Tonga

From Flanagan's comments it looks like Feagai will start on the wing though which is fine.

Sele will need to get more match fitness to come back in the team.

Exact same as the one I was thinking of yesterday. I'm pretty impressed if that's the side that rolls out round 1

:100: The moment Gutho arrived, Sloans future with us was sealed imo, as I now see Flanno back flipping on his, well not promise, but strong suggestion that Sloan would be moved to the flank. Now looks like he is in a three way battle for that one wing spot. CT is also another Flanno 'boy'. If the case I see our 'enigmatic genius' seeking a release again.

im sorry but you can’t just hand someone the slot. Yes he would be moved there. Didn’t say he’s a walk up starter! Sloan was injured in pre season (AGAIN) which has made it a difficult path to return as the wingers who have played have done well.
CT’S energy is electric and hasn’t put a foot wrong while he played last year.
Sloan isn’t proven winger so 120-150m per game in cup needs to happen before I see him selected
