Looking at the footage I dont see how he even grounded the ball...

Skeepe, I would be totally surprised if any of your 8,000 odd posts dont feature a mention of Newcastle.. you seem quite obsessed with Newcastle.

I have a theory that perhaps.. Skeepe maybe a closet Knights fan.

There's a big army turn out coming up for this one, so hopefully the RA and Crusadne can get a killer atmosphere pumping

Cant wait for it myself
does anyone know the EAS policy on confetti? Im thinking of purchasing some green, blue and yellow crete paper to cut for confetti but i know some grounds confiscate it

The side that I reckon Smith will go with:

1 Gidley
2 McManus
3 Naiqama
4 A.MacDougall
5 Vuna
6 Bailey
7 Mullen
8 Royal
9 Buderus
10 Tolar
11 Simpson
12 Houston
13 Fa'aoso

14 Wicks
15 Hilder
16 White
17 Patterson

I'd expect Simpson and maybe Fa'aoso to pack into the front row at times throughout the game. Smith may even start with Simpson in the front row and move him back. We really could do with another good prop whilst Cross and Sargent are out.

Meh, pretty close to the mark

Out of all the refs we had to get him.... I spose it could be worse though, could be Cummins who we have never won a game under

Knights V Raiders Match Preview
NRL
Knights v Raiders
EnergyAustralia Stadium
Saturday 7.30pm

NOT much is expected of these two teams in 2008; however that might just be the incentive the Knights and Raiders need to succeed this season.

Canberra are the perennial underdogs of the competition, while Newcastle has it all in front of them after finishing second last on the ladder last year.

A winning start to the season is paramount for both teams, as the home team Newcastle tries to rebuild EnergyAustralia Stadium as a fortress, and Canberra attempt to turn around a recent trend of not being able to win away from the nation’s capital.

The Raiders field one of the youngest sides in the NRL and after they got their taste of the big time last season, they might just be ready to show their full potential this season.

Newcastle on the other hand have recruited heavily, with Melbourne premiership prop Ben Cross the key signing to strengthen the Knights’ pack.

Watch out Knights: Raiders’ fullback William Zillman is set to hit the ground running after a remarkable recovery from off-season knee surgery.

Zillman has already shown glimpses of his attacking ability, and Canberra officials are tipping that the 21-year-old will emerge as a genuine star of the game in the Centenary year.

His incisive raids will be paramount to the Raiders’ cause – last season he ranked third for metres gained on kick returns, carving out 1.2 kilometres at 11.5 metres a time.

Watch out Raiders: With a full off-season under his belt, captain Danny Buderus has been outstanding in Newcastle’s trial matches.

Buderus looks fresh and determined to re-assert his position as the game’s premier hooker.

With talk of this being his last season in the NRL, and with Cam Smith in his representative sights in a World Cup year, Buderus will be looking to go out with a bang.

Where it will be won: This match might just come down to the halfback duel between two of the brightest prospects in the game.

Todd Carney and Jarrod Mullen have both been identified as the NSW Origin team’s future in the halves and they will be desperate to prove themselves right from the get go.

Carney will have to show maturity to put current contract negotiations to the back of his mind, while Mullen will have to find his feet again after he missed the majority of last season with injury.

The Raiders will rely on their pace out wide, with Zillman, Monaghan, Graham, Purtell and Best offering plenty with the ball.

Newcastle are looking to get more out of their forwards this year and although Cross is missing through injury, new boys Danny Wicks, Chris Houston and the relatively unknown Daniel Tolar get a chance to show their worth.

The History: Played 28; Knights 11; Raiders 4; drawn 1. From 13 matches played between the teams at Energy Australia Stadium, the Knights hold the advantage with nine victories to the Raiders’ four. Their recent history is even, after a win each last season and four wins apiece from their past eight matches.

Conclusion: Last year Newcastle and Canberra had the embarrassment of being the two worst defensive teams in the competition – the Knights conceded 708 points and the Raiders 652.

Both teams have the ability to score points so it will be defence that holds the key to this match.

Newcastle will be hoping to receive a boost from their home crowd, with their loyal base of supporters sure to turn out in force for the first game of the year.

Canberra however are the specialists at grinding out tough wins and they will make life difficult for Gidley, Buderus and co.

Match Officials: Referee – Tony De Las Heras; Sideline Officials – Peter Kirby & Steve Chiddy; Video Ref – Paul Simpkins.

Televised: Fox Sports 2 – Delayed 9.20pm

Newcastle Knights v Canberra Raiders
Greg Prichard | March 12, 2008 - 5:58PM

Saturday, EnergyAustralia Stadium, 7.30pm
Referee: Tony De Las Heras

Two teams who are considered to be prime wooden spoon candidates going head-to-head first-up. The loser is going to be left looking a bit shabby. Canberra are on the road, but they've got a shot at winning this game.

There is a good reason Penrith and Manly are throwing big money at Raiders halfback Todd Carney - the kid is potentially a big star. He's got the ability to spark something here. But the Knights deserve favouritsm. Newcastle coach, Brian Smith, attracted a lot of negative publicity with his player clean-out at the club, but that wouldn't bother him.

Now we will see if he can make the player personnel changes translate into wins and playing at home against Canberra, Newcastle should get the cash - even if it might not be by much. Kurt Gidley, at fullback, and hooker Danny Buderus are the keys for the Knights. They will take a lot heat off the new-look halves combination of Jarrod Mullen and Chris Bailey by getting heavily involved in orchestrating the attack. The Raiders are renowned for struggling away from home in recent years.

KNIGHTS: Kurt Gidley, James McManus, Wes Naiqama, Adam MacDougall, Cooper Vuna, Chris Bailey, Jarrod Mullen, Daniel Tolar, Danny Buderus (capt), Jesse Royal, Chris Houston, Zeb Taia, Steve Simpson. Interchange: Matt Hilder, Cory Paterson, Richard Faaoso, Danny Wicks, Scott Dureau, Matthew White, Keith Lulia (three to be omitted)

RAIDERS: William Zillman, Colin Best, Phil Graham, Joel Monaghan, Adrian Purtell, Terry Campese, Todd Carney, Troy Thompson, Lincoln Withers, Scott Logan, Neville Costigan, Glen Turner, Alan Tongue (capt). Interchange: Marshall Chalk, Josh Miller, Dane Tilse, Michael Weyman, Joe Picker, Nigel Plum (two to be omitted)

The Ref is Tony De La Heras...

Wow I thought this guy was just a world class boxer, didnt know he ref'd league games as well.

My team is....

1. Kids
2. Vuna
3. Doogs
4. Wes
5. Jimmy Jam

6. Mullo
7. Bailey

8. Royal
9. Bedsy
10. Tolar

11. Patotoe
12. Houston
13 Simmo

14 Dureau - to add a different dimension, cause it spins the defence out when they are taken in another dimension.
15 Wicks - cause he can backflip and perform circus acts to distract the opposition. and cause he is on 250k a year and he should be out there.
16 Fa aso - Cause he is Fa ast and powerful
17 Hilder - to give bedsy a rest when he feels like resting

My only problem with this team is, there is no Mathew White Faaaaark....

Shame it's on delay, hopefully I'll be able to watch it.
Just wondering if these new foxtel features allow you watch it live instead of the delay of 9:20pm?

Yeah mate, you just use the RED Viewers Choice button and choose to watch the Knights game instead.

You'll get it live mate on Foxtel at 7.30pm.

You can even watch both games together in split screen if you want to man
