Two main surprises for me.

Even thought Maranta outplayed Vidot in the England game, I feel like Vidot did enough in 2014 to get a start over Maranta.

I thought that Whitchurch pretty much played himself out of an NRL game in England. Nikorima showed more in 10 minutes than Whitchurch showed the whole game. Hopefully he plays much better than in England.

I suppose Macca will play 80 then?

The way I see it is copley got named in front of Vidot. Me personally don't rate Maranta or kahu. They're not nrl standard. I'd have a backline like this
Hodges
Oates
Reed
Copley
Vidot

yes the return of Bennett now shows its ugly side.
maranta over vidot is playing favourites pure and simple
back to the stu Kelly/Scott minto days
if he went with the plowman name nobody would have heard if him.
top shelf plodder

He has improved and was quite good last year. I don't think it's a terrible decision

He did look a little sharper in the English game ... but that was against English players.

Whitchurch is probably an even more interesting selection. Considering he languished in ISC all year last year - couldn't get a look in - and Bennett prefers him probably over about 10 other options? Reminds me a little of Rod Wishart without the goal kicking.

Other player I'm looking forward to seeing is Mitchell Dodds. Again, he's beaten about four other possibilities to the bench - Garbett, Joe O, Molo, and of course Wallace.

Pressure will be on Dodds to perform.

Would rather my wingers scoring tries than making metres.

But I take your point.

Fans need to remember it's Round 1. Wayne isn't going to pick his best 17 just yet and he's going to make decisions that he feels are in the best interest of the team and the players. He's going to give the likes of Maranta and Whitchurch a shot and it's now up to them to make the most of it. If they don't make the most of them, they know they've got Vidot, Nikorima, Oates etc nipping at their heels.

Looking forward to the game. It's going to be tough against the defending premiers straight up but I don't think the boys are going to embarrass themselves.

I would say Vidot bombed more tries than Matanta last year. I think Vidot should be there but I just don't think it's as bad as everyone is making out. Whitchirch selection I don't understand, I just don't like the bench at all.

Vidot is playing prop for the Jets this weekend by the way

I rate whitchurch so I'm glad he's getting a go.
Bennett see vidot as a forward I guess
if that's the case he should start over glen
glen to the bench
dodds out.

vidot didn't get many opportunities last year because of our woeful 5/8

And he simply blew some opportunities as well.

I would have preferred Daniel there myself but the reality of the situation is that before he came to the Broncos he'd been a fringe player for three seasons and he had his share of bad moments for us as well.

It isn't a travesty and if nothing else should keep him honest with himself and his performances.

FFS lets hope Wayne never use Whitchurch as an outside back ever again.
Don't think I seen a game he has played without dropping the pill.
He has worst hands than ron jeremy.
I think Wayne see Whitchuch as some young Beau Scott

he had a couple of howlers fair enough
but he played his guts out most games and stood out because of that
my main concern is Bennett takes as long as griffin to drop a player no matter how poor thier form is

Did you not watch Glenn against Wigan? Why are people always so quick to dismiss Glenn despite playing well?

As for Vidot he is apparently playing front row this weekend for Ipswich.

I must admit, it is easy to look at the type of game played by Vidot last year, and see the beginnings of a fringe running second rower. I'm not aware of his cardio capabilities so its hard to say if he could be anything more than a bench option in that position.

Having said that, it's suggested that most players last year were playing overweight (Barba and Thaiday), and if he was to lose a few kilos he may still be a good winger - and of course improve his bomb taking.

It's interesting the Walker brothers have put him in at prop. One wonders if they've done that at Bennett's request? Could it mean that this year the relationship between the feeder clubs and the Broncos will improve.

I wouldn't read too much into it - the Walker brothers are the mad scientists of the ISC and love playing backs in the forwards and using their speed to get around their opposites.

With Whitchurch, I get the sense that Wayne reckons he could play the game with 16 players and is just sending a message to his squad. Apparently Aaron was a stand-out during their military camp and from all reports has a great attitude. So I think it's a case of sending his players the message, both young and old that if you behave like this, you'll get your shot. I also think he's challenging Aaron - you've come back from all of this and made the most of it, now it's time to prove your worth at this level.

If I was a betting man, I'd bet against Aaron but I hope he plays well.

I'm interested in seeing how this different positions in attack & defense plays out. Will it be the next thing from sliced bread (like wrestling) or see teams doing it get caught with their pants down in the change over.

And forgot to add can't wait to see the young halves match up, Parker play 300, & quoting some journalists Hodges run out after his 15 year transition from 'Larrakan to Leader!'

Yep ... in all the gripes about some selections, let's not forget the year of possibilities ahead. Milford shows in the England game that he deserves all the wraps ... and that was his first/second game in the club.

He reminds me of a mixture between Jonathon Thurston and Terry Lamb. His support plan has the potential to make a HUGE difference to the team this year. Correct me if I'm wrong, but we really haven't had a great support player for a while - someone who bobs up at the sniff of a break.

Also excited about Blair and Gavet. They both showed enough in the England game to raise expectations.
