I rate him and would like to keel him but he's been shite

I want to keep him too but again tonight 85m. 6 missed tackles and 2 errors and a 3rd error was wrongly called a knocked back.

Compare that to Sorensen on half the time on the field. And for elite money asked for.

He is a $400k middle of the road forward

Didn't get to watch the game or follow the thread. Did ol mate Cockburn show up? Or did it all get a bit too spicy for the little guy?

The SuperCoaches strike again!! Rugby League is played on dirt and grass, not a spreadsheet.

I actually thought a few of our more senior players actually had terrible games today. Cleary had a poor second half and API’s service was uncharacteristically sloppy. Such a dominant win versus quality opponents with the main me having a off day is so exciting for us Panther fans.

Good win.

Excellent first half with good defence in the second.

Martin had a shocker with his hands and Edwards murdered a certain try.

With Melbourne getting hammered again we've opened a good gap with wins and point differential

Knew I shouldn't have read our match thread.

Why don't people understand players can have periods of bad form? Luai had a bad month or so amd now is playing his natural game again. Thought either him or Yeo were best on ground.

Martin was pretty bad for errors last night.

Exactly. Probably are reasons for it and usually is always sorted out

I can't remember him playing a good game this season.

For that reason I agree with him that side has improvement left. The right side in attack is the main area

Yeah if anything it's a compliment to the club that they can work through these periods while continuing to win and get the players back to their best in reasonable time.

Just looking at numbers is a bad idea.

For example, compare the stats for Kikau and Martin last night. Pretty much all in favour of Martin, yet no one is piling on Kiks.

I actually don't think Martin has been that bad. His missed tackles aren't leading to line breaks or tries. His effort is high in a lot of areas including kick chase and kick pressure.

If we had a genuine second row option on the bench he would benefit immensely from a 15min break (as would Kikau).

Of course more then stats

Kiks put Tago away for what should of led to a try

A couple of other good offloads which allowed us to play off the front foot

We are 4 points clear at the top despite virtually carrying the right side. Atleast in attack

You think he played well? Why?

I get people not agreeing but how about offering more then that
It wasn’t his best game, but he wasn’t shite.

He had two errors as I recall; one was a bad play the ball, attention-to -detail thing where he got tangled up. That was poor, but happens in a game due to sheer physics of the shape of the ball, weight of the players and angles bodies end up at. Yes he could have reduced those factors by holding the ball closer to his body. The other was a short pass that he put down before contact; hard ball to take but he probably should have. So that is two errors. In terms of missed tackles I can’t remember any major missed tackles (not like the rights miss of Manu that led to the ball being spread to the other side, or Crotter on Momo). I thought his first contact was excellent last night (same with Kiks on the other side); constantly hitting hard and turning the play back inside.

Thr SuperCoach point is that his worth to the team isn’t based on stats; he has a role to play that means he gets the ball significantly less frequently than the middle forwards. Martin’s role is to straighten up the right hand attack and create room for his outside men, and he does this really well by a) running his lines well (if you watch closely he almost always hits the outside shoulder or the edge back row defender that is protecting the defensive left half or the half, or a metre or so either side) and b) always being an option (he is always there and always runs with purpose). It would be great if he developed a pass after contact/offload, but that generally means more errors (see Kiks overall error count across the past few years and physics point above). In defence Martin hits hard; again his role and the reality is players bounce off him. This is bad from a tackle effectiveness perspective but doesn’t lead to momentum being created by the opposition.

So, did he have a good game? He did his job as described above in attack without being spectacular, and his defending was very good; so an average game for a SOO back rower. But he plays an integral role in a side that just beat the team coming 4th without really hitting any heights. But that stat doesn’t show up in SuperCoach and requires a greater understanding of the game plan to assess value.
