McInnes providing direction for Dragons at lock

Shifting Cameron McInnes from hooker to lock is providing St George Illawarra forwards with more direction during games, according to Dragons teammates.

McInnes has started at lock in the past two matches against Manly and Canterbury, with halfback Ben Hunt taking on the dummy half duties for the full 80 minutes after playing off the bench in the previous four games.

The Dragons have won both four of their last six games and both matches since McInnes moved to lock on a full-time basis.

"I am liking the forward pack we have got at the moment," Hunt said. "Moving Cam to lock is a massive bonus for us. He is obviously a good ball player and he can help organise the other big boys in the middle so it makes my job a bit easier. I am just enjoying playing with him there."

NSW Origin prop Paul Vaughan has been starting in the front row with Blake Lawrie and the pair then interchange with Trent Merrin and Josh Kerr.

Having Hunt and McInnes in the forward pack ensure St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor has cover for an injury in the halves or to fullback Matt Dufty, with five-eighth Corey Norman able to play there if needed.

As a result, McGregor has been able to carry four forwards on the bench and second-rowers Jacob Host and Jackson Ford will join Merrin and Kerr on the interchange for Saturday's match against Cronulla as Tyrell Faumoano was promoted to the second row in place of the suspended Tariq Sims.

"The inclusion of Hunty into No.9 has been quite different and a lot of things have changed," Kangaroos second-rower Tyson Frizell said. "Cam going to No.13 has been really good so there is a solid core of players who are playing week in and week out."

Vaughan ran 237 metres in the 34-4 defeat of Manly and he again ran further with the ball than any other player in last Saturday's 28-22 win over the Bulldogs, while McInnes has developed into a running back-rower.

He carried the ball 140 metres in 17 runs last week, while still making 44 tackles, and is able to direct teammates around on the field.

"It is just another middle who knows what the hooker wants," Ford said of McInnes. "Cam is very loud, Hunty is very loud too so we have just got those experienced players in the middle, pushing us and telling us where to go.

"Even in defence, they are very experienced so it is good having both of them in the middle.

"Hunty has got good leg speed and he is very unpredictable so you don't know what he is going to do [in attack]. You have just always got to keep pushing up when he goes.

"Cam is the same and it is just good to have Cam in the middle with that ball playing role and creating that second phase."

After coming from 22-10 down to scoring three tries in the last 15 minutes and snatch a dramatic win against the last-placed Bulldogs, St George Illawarra players acknowledged they would need to improve to beat the Sharks for a second time this season.

On the previous occasion, Hunt started on the bench for the first time since joining the Dragons three years ago and made an impact when he came on in the dummy-half role to help the side to their first win since the resumption of the NRL on May 28.

Since then, St George Illawarra have beaten Gold Coast, Manly and Canterbury, while turning in arguably their best performance of the season in a 26-12 loss to Sydney Roosters and suffering a narrow 22-16 defeat against Canberra.

The Sharks have won four of their last five matches against the Bulldogs, Sea Eagles, Titans and Warriors to sit in ninth place on behind Wests Tigers and South Sydney on for-and-against and equal with 10th placed Manly.

The Dragons are two points behind in 11th position and a win against Cronulla could propel them into the top eight for the first time this season.

"That's where we want to be. We want to be somewhere in the eight," Frizell said. "We are looking to slowly build. We know where we need to be and know where we want to be."

When it boils down to it, as a team, we are very susceptible to our own ill-discipline and mental lapses. Confidence can drop quickly on these. Something major would have to occur between now and October for us to leave a mark on the comp. Almost cost us the game on Saturday, and can't afford it against a Sharks team that has plenty of points in them. That's the hard truth.

Respect the ball and we should win this one. No excuses.

No more stupid penalties especially while we are in possession. Our back 3 MUST go for the high ball on the full. Our halves and hooker must go for long kicks to the corners and make sure team-mates go with them to chase down the kicks.

Bennett taught our team about working as a team in attack and defense, discipline and being responsible for a particular area of the field in relation to the ruck when in defense. All of this guidance was thrown out the door when Bennett exited the Club.

I am fully expecting the Sharks to really test us at different times during the game.

If we switch off they can pile points on quickly and I would back them to defend a lead much better than the Dogs.

Jonhson is mercurial and can influence games when at his best so he needs to be closely monitored in the centre of the park and Graham of course can be devastating when in the mood.

Danger game for us and we need to make sure the interchange is used very wisely.

IMO this is a game where Fuimaono would have been perfect off the bench just prior to and after half time so hopefully career coach might work that out and make a change to the run on side.

The Sharks have some big old men who will get tired in the middle so impact is required not containment.

I feel sure our back-row forwards can shut down Johnson and Graham.

The match-up between centers of both teams I predict will be the highlight of the game. For this game Norman will really need to step up because if he does not, there is a real possibility we could lose the game.

Who are you referring to? Graham and Woods are their oldest forwards, and they’re both 29. The rest of the pack is 25 and under.

I actually thought Fafitta was playing so my bad on that one.

Woods at 29 is an "old man" IMO and has been "old" for almost his entire time at the Sharks.

Game day guide: Round 11 v Sharks

The St George Illawarra Dragons will face the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium, Kogarah on Saturday, July 25th (5:30pm). This is your Round 11 game guide.

Home and away
Stone the flamin' crows, the Sharks are playing a home game at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium? Strewth!

While technically an away game for the Dragons on Saturday, we want to see as many Red V members in the stands as possible for this weekend's local derby.

Email redv@dragons.com.au or message us on our social media platforms for more details on how you can gain access to our "away game".

On this day
Dragons fans will be hoping history repeats itself on July 25.

16 years ago to the day, a Trent Barrett-led St George Illawarra outfit prevailed 26-14 over the Sharks – at a time where Dragons fanatic John Howard was prime minister and the NRL salary cap was just $3.25 million per club.

Cronulla stalwart Paul Gallen played five-eighth that day, Mark Riddell played in the second row and crossed for a meat pie while Dragons winger Reece Simmonds crossed for a double.

Changes to the team sheet
The Dragons have found a winning formula of late as they sit one win outside the top eight. The only Red V change for Round 11 has come following the suspension of Tariq Sims, bringing Tyrell Fuimaono into the starting side and Jacob Host onto the bench.

The Sharks find themselves in a similar boat, with Toby Rudolf starting at lock for Scott Sorensen (knee) and Siosifa Talakai in the back row for the suspended Briton Nikora. Jack Williams and debutant Teig Wilton are the new names on the bench.

Vaughany on fire
Powerful big man Paul Vaughan has reinstated himself as one of the premier props in the competition over the past two weeks. The ears of rep selectors would have pricked up hearing about his monster 237-metre performance in the win over Manly, backing that up with another 184 metres in the win over the Bulldogs. His battle with the Sharks' forwards will be one to watch.

I think Host will give us a Boost, he's been beating people to a pulp at training.
Kerr actually said that a few weeks ago just before Host did his hamstring.

I really hope this is the time when he shows his true ability and that he gets consistent game time.

I also hope the halves finally dish him up some early ball but if the halves play a side each (hopefully Clune has a free reign) he could suffer if he is on Norman's side.

As usual the forwards hold the key.
Win the battle & it goes a long way to nullifying Johnsons impact who when he is on he’s hot but I consider a flat track bully. Graham has been rather ordinary but is due for a big one.
The use of the bench is important.
