Kerr actually said that a few weeks ago just before Host did his hamstring.

I really hope this is the time when he shows his true ability and that he gets consistent game time.

I also hope the halves finally dish him up some early ball but if the halves play a side each (hopefully Clune has a free reign) he could suffer if he is on Norman's side.
Comparing Kerr and Host is like comparing apples and oranges. Is the juice worth the squeeze? Maybe, but time will tell.

St George Illawarra fullback Matt Dufty feared his career could be over if he didn’t perform.

St George Illawarra star Matt Dufty is the NRL’s form fullback, but six weeks ago he feared his career could be over if he didn’t perform.

Duffy’s career was at a crossroads prior to the Dragons’ round 5 clash against the Sharks on a sunny Sunday in mid-June.

The previous week in round 4, the Penshurst junior was dropped after a shocking loss to the Warriors in the return from the COVID-19 lockdown.

Dufty also lost his No.1 jumper to Zac Lomax in round one after the Dragons deemed Lomax to be the club’s long-term fullback.

This prompted rumours that he could leave the Red V, but these suggestions were squashed when he starred against Cronulla starting at fullback with a try.

Six weeks on, Dufty is the NRL‘s standout No.1 ahead of Saturday’s rematch against the Sharks, and he has that Dragons’ round 5 win to thank for his revival.

“That is when I really sat back and thought, ‘this is my chance’,” Dufty said.

“There might not be another one if I stuff this one up and I had nothing to lose and I just wanted to play footy.

“It really hit home for me that this could be where my career starts and finishes.”

Dufty says he wouldn’t be where he is now without the challenges he experienced when his star-studded form from 2018 went missing.

He dominated that season with 13 tries as the Dragons won 15 games to finish in seventh position.

“Back in ‘18 when I probably had my best year I was playing with confidence and just playing footy,” he said.

“I wasn’t thinking about if I play bad here, I might not play next week.

“All the coaching staff have put their faith in me and I’m trying to repay them back for keeping me in that No.1 spot.

“I’m doing a pretty good job at the moment, but there is still a lot of improvement and growth for me.”

Dufty believes the feeling of failing coach Paul McGregor has also fuelled St George Illawarra’s run of form.

Since the Dragons’ board publicly backed McGregor as the club’s coach in the lead up to round 5, the Red V have won four of their past six games.

“That is when all the boys got around and said it is not on Mary anymore,” Dufty said.

“It was never on Mary, it is on us now and we need to start performing and pick up that embarrassment of where we were at the start of the year.

“Our roster has a lot of good players in our team and we were underperforming.

“It really hit home for our whole team. We knew we were a lot better and had a lot more to give.

“It just took a couple of weeks for us to click and finally have the whole team’s confidence back.”

Dufty will suit up in the away sheds at Kogarah Oval on Saturday against Cronulla for the first time since his under 10s grand final with Penshurst.

With the Sharks the home team, the Dragons have been relegated to the rival’s rooms.

'It's our home': Dragons, Sharks trade barbs over Kogarah

If you walked down Jubilee Avenue near Kogarah Park on Friday, by the time you got to the bottom it was all #UpUp.

The road synonymous with the St George area, the Dragons and rugby league history had been splashed with the Sharks' hashtag, which is also the start of their famous singalong. Diehard Dragons fans reckon they've never seen anything so ghastly on their side of Tom Uglys Bridge.

But stroll into Kogarah's Netstrata Jubilee Stadium on Saturday evening and you will receive your free face mask with Sharks branding. There will be a Cronulla flag, too.

"We'll get there and put as much black, white and blue around the place as we can," Cronulla chief executive Dino Mezzatesta said as the club makes the suburban venue its home for the next two years while its leagues club undergoes a redevelopment.

"Our players, our brand and our sponsors will be across our entire dressing room. That is important because when 'Bomber' [coach John Morris] and the team walk in there, it's ours. It's no one else's, it's ours."

It's our home. It's the home of red and white.

Paul McGregor
St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor was having none of it. Smirking like a coach who won last week only can, he provided a gentle dig about who belongs at the ground when tossed up a half volley on Friday.

"It's our home," he said. "It's the home of red and white."

But for one night at least, that home will be in the away dressing sheds.

"That will be different for them," Mezzatesta laughed.

Earlier this week, there was even a suggestion Dragons members wouldn't be provided with a chance to attend the game given a capacity on crowds during the COVID-interrupted season.

The Sharks later granted the Red V faithful a small allocation, but weight of numbers will be against them on the concourse.

a3d514bdf0395c74e06868955ad4727bcf1f2ee4

The Sharks have redesigned the home dressing sheds for their clash against the Dragons at Kogarah's Netstrata Jubilee Oval.

Putting aside squabbling over who the ground belongs to, the match is of huge significance to both clubs. They met earlier this year at Campbelltown Stadium when the Dragons notched their first win of the year. The Sharks will put a four-point buffer between them and the Dragons on the ladder with a reversal.

St George Illawarra, who engineered a miraculous escape against the Bulldogs last week, will start to lose touch with the finals contenders if they are beaten again.

"Every team in the competition want to be in the eight, and when you're in the eight you want to be in the four," McGregor said. "We're just going to take it week to week and prepare well to give ourselves the best chance to climb that ladder.

Six weeks ago we couldn't have done what we did in the last 20 minutes last week.

Paul McGregor
"Six weeks ago we couldn't have done what we did in the last 20 minutes last week. That's a good sign, a very good sign."

Morris will hand a debut to nephew Teig Wilton, who spurned big-money offers from rival clubs to stay at the Sharks. He has come onto the bench after Briton Nikora was suspended last week.

Josh Dugan is also down for the count after being pulled by the medical team at the 11th hour on Friday afternoon. The hamstring injury means Dugan's 200th game celebrations will be pushed back a week.

"I always wondered what it would be like for father and son relationships, like for [Ivan and Nathan] Cleary, but I don’t really see it like that at all … it’s a coach, player relationship," Morris said on Friday. "He hasn’t been given any leg-ups at all. He’s definitely earned his shot. The senior players really appreciate him and believe in him."

Morris also expressed concerns on Friday over the lengthy delay on Bronson Xerri's B-sample, which was scheduled to be tested on June 9.

On Friday, the Sydney Morning Herald and the Age reported that banned Australian swimmer Shayna Jack had reached out to Xerri to offer support amid the hold-up. Jack told her lawyer Tim Fuller he was extremely stressed as a result of the uncertainty.

The local derby round 2.
Today is the game where we don't show up and lose, for no reason.
Why? Because we have everything to play for.
Going for 3 wins in a row.
Playing against a weakened Sharks outfit with no Moylan or Dugan.
We have their ex-coach on our side now.
Its an away game being played at our home ground.
EVERYTHING is in our favour.
And that is why we lose.
Don't be fooled.
We won't show up.
Its just what happens.

Yeah, we should win, but they will be up for this for sure.
Looking forward to the game.

I'd give my left nut to win but sorry mate I've seen this movie before.
Sharks by plenty.
In late news it's been reported that Barry Beath is going to deliver this weeks pre game and half time motivational speeches.

  1. He is going to remind them about the infamous jersey ripping episode at the Cronulla Leagues club.
  2. He is going to remind them that the Sharks came into the comp at the time the Dragons great run ended and that they are the reason why we haven't won every comp since 1966.
  3. He is going to tell them the story of how we signed Henry Tatana for the 75 season and how he lost a testicle as part of the negotiations for that deal and seeing Crush is offering his left one if we win it would be nice for the boys to get a win so Barry can be far better balanced in his senior years.
There will be an organ transplant car waiting for you at the gate Crush.
