GAME DAY

Game day guide: Round 13 v Roosters

The St George Illawarra Dragons will face the Sydney Roosters at WIN Stadium, Wollongong on Thursday, August 6 (7:50pm). This is your Round 13 game day guide.

Anzac Cup to be contested
St George Illawarra and Sydney Roosters' traditional Anzac Day game is usually an opportunity for the game to honour and commemorate the generations of Australian servicemen and women – thos

e who have defended our values and freedoms in wars, conflicts and peace operations over a century of service.

2020 has been a year like no other, with Anzac Day being celebrated without gatherings, live services or parades. We honoured our service men and women in isolation. In these difficult times, there is no more fitting time to reflect on the challenges faced by our defence forces both present and past then on Thursday night.

The annual traditional Anzac match between the Dragons and Sydney Roosters will be played on the 105th anniversary of the Battle of Lone Pine; the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War will also follow on August 15.

Both clubs will commemorate the occasion and pay respect to service men and women pre-match with the Last Post ceremony which will include the Ode, Last Post, a moments silence and the rouse.

Like the usual traditional Anzac Day clash, the Red V and the Tricolours will also contest the Anzac Cup, currently held by the Sydney Roosters following their 10-point win on Anzac Day last year.

Big changes beckon
Dragons coach Paul McGregor has omitted Corey Norman from the 17 ahead of the club's clash against the two-time defending premiers.

Norman has been replaced by Adam Clune (concussion) while Trent Merrin returns from the same ailment in place of Jacob Host.

See how the Dragons will line up otherwise here.

The Dragons will have to contend with two former Illawarra juniors following them naming Josh Morris and Drew Hutchison. However Kyle Flanagan will not play against the Red V.

Sailor primed and ready for utility role

Stay Covid safe!
Red V members and partners afforded entrance to attend WIN Stadium, Wollongong on Thursday are reminded to familiarise themselves with the Covid-19 safe protocols.

A reminder to Red V members not eligible for the Round 13 ballot as well as non-ticketed members are encouraged to keep an eye on their email inbox throughout the week, as a small portion of tickets may potentially become available for purchase.

Unfamiliar territory for Roosters
Mitchell Aubusson will celebrate his 300th first grade game in what will coincidentally be his first ever game at WIN Stadium, Wollongong.

It's been nine years since the Roosters have swung by Wollongong way to play in a premiership game; a game that while they won is the only victory they have recorded against St George Illawarra at the ground (three losses, one draw – dating back to 1999).

Only Aubusson, co-captains Boyd Cordner and Jake Friend and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves were in the Roosters' 2011 squad, although only the latter three featured in the Round 23, 2011 clash.

Norman dumped as Dragons switch to Clune, Hunt for Roosters clash
Dragons Den

Enigmatic playmaker Corey Norman has been dropped for St George Illawarra's clash with defending premiers the Roosters on Thursday night.

Coach Paul McGregor has opted to shift Ben Hunt to five-eighth and pair with the returning Adam Clune, who missed the loss to South Sydney at Kogarah because of concussion the previous week against the Sharks.

The Dragons are two games and a sizeable for-and-against gap behind the eighth-placed Rabbitohs and would need to beat the Roosters, or overpower Parramatta next week to keep any hope of finals action alive.

Tristan Sailor has been named on the bench again, with Euan Aitken named despite a hamstring concern.

Trent Merrin also returns, named on the bench.

St George Illawarra surged to a 16-nil lead over Souths, but had handed the advantage back by half-time and eventually went down 32-24.

The Roosters have named Albion Park-Oak Flats junior Drew Hutchison on the bench, with Lachlan Lam to start in the halves in place of the injured Kyle Flanagan.

Kiama junior Josh Morris also comes back into the Roosters line-up, having recovered from a calf problem.

Why Dragons dropped Norman for Roosters clash

St George Illawarra have brutally axed Corey Norman after he failed to attack South Sydney's right edge once halfback Adam Reynolds left the field with a "burner" last Thursday night.

The Dragons raced to a 16-0 lead against Souths but failed to go on with the game - nor exploit Reynolds' side of the field - and $850,000-a-year star Norman paid the heaviest penalty.

Battered NRL star Kieran Foran should get an incentive-based contract worth up to $500,000 for next season, Peter Sterling suggests.

In the team for his attack and not his defence, Norman was yesterday overlooked for Ben Hunt and the returning Adam Clune, with little livewire Tristan Sailor retaining a bench spot.

Unlike last weekend, Sailor is expected to be injected into the game much earlier against the Sydney Roosters on Thursday night at WIN Stadium. He will play five-eighth, with Ben Hunt to shift to hooker and Cameron McInnes to lock forward, which was the case late last week.

Sailor was shopped to rivals the Wests Tigers just a fortnight ago as he struggled to get any game time.

He told reporters earlier this week he was keen to get the chance to link up with Clune in the halves, also confirming his manager had reached out to the Tigers about a potential loan deal.

The Roosters will have loyal clubman Mitch Aubusson bring up 300 games, but Kyle Flanagan was rested and Lachlan Lam named at No.7. Chooks captain Boyd Cordner was given an extra week to overcome the second head knock he received at training last Friday week.

St George Illawarra star Corey Norman has been dropped for Thursday night's clash with Sydney Roosters, headlining a number of NRL stars missing for round 13.

After two-straight losses, Dragons coach Paul McGregor has swung the axe by relegating big-earning half Norman to an extended bench for their match against the premiers in Wollongong.

The Dragons are 11th on the NRL ladder but with eight games left in the season need to make up for an early string of poor form to play finals.

In a bid to spark the side, Adam Clune will return from injury at halfback alongside Ben Hunt against the Roosters, who have been hit hard by injury.

Roosters skipper Boyd Cordner has not been named as he continues to recover from concussion and will be joined by Kyle Flanagan in the casualty ward, although the halfback's ailment is unknown.

If our forwards don't muscle up, Keary will tear us apart.
Simple.

Ok how about Norman and Aitken then
How about we offload Norman and Aitken and go in a different direction with our halves?
I'm sick of all these older, risky, injury prone signings.
Widdop will be 32 next year and from memory his shoulders weren't all that great?
We've been there done that mate!
Yeah he has his moments but its back to the future stuff, it seems desperate.

Thanks again GS- Norman's gone-at last- but given our limp forward efforts of recent weeks, the certainty of us not making the 8 and the uncertainty over the comings and goings next years, why would McGregor not give Kaide Ellis a go ahead of Lawrie, Host Fuimaono et al ?- monumentally, criminally stupid.

Add Eddie Blacker to that List...

I usually agree with you, but here I cant.
Norman has been one of the most expensive and inept signings for the JV.

Attitude, performance, sorry it just stinks.

One thing Widdop did for us ( mind you with some pretty average halves partners for most of his tenure), was lead by example. Not always the best plays, but fook me he gave it all. All under Mary's tenure.

If his shoulder is fine, then a short term deal if possible is a no brainer.
Put Hunt back to seven, and captain Mac where he deserves to be and Widdop can be a massive influence.

Just piss of the imposter, who earns a shitload laughing with opp players when we lose.

I’m ok with Hunt at 6 I just hope they give it time.Clune organising & Hunt just running as often as he can. Having McInnes back at 9 gives Ford the chance but McInnes really needs to run more instead of just passing & tackling. Him running out of dummy half with Dufty on his hip would be handy.

I completely agree with you regarding Norman, we are on the same page there.
On Widdop though I think we should go in another direction.

Watch Hunt taking the controlling role this game over Clune despite being named a 6 with Cam constantly passing the ball to his edge,..

It will be interesting to see if Hunt plays one side of the ruck and Clune plays the other side or if they play Clune inside and Hunt outside. As mentioned by others, I expect Easts will be anticipating Hunt taking the majority of the plays. so there may be the opportunity for an ambush.

We’re not going to get a better chance than Thursday night to beat the chooks. They are missing some cattle, our season is on the line. If we can’t beat them Thursday night we won’t beat them for a long time. How bad do you guys want it?? A win here could just flick the switch!!
