Bulldogs enforcer Jack Hetherington has been slammed for taking advantage of the NRL’s crackdown on high shots and milking a penalty in his side’s win over the Dragons on Monday.
Hetherington was hit high by Dragons hooker Andrew McCullough. It was relatively mild, but knowing how hard the NRL is coming down on contact with the head, Hetherington looked up at the referee hoping for a response before pretending that he had been knocked out.
It worked. McCullough was penalised and the Bulldogs extended their lead by two points.
But Dragons forward Blake Lawrie knew exactly what Hetherington was doing and made sure he let the rival prop know.
“I had respect for you before that,” Lawrie fired at Hetherington.
The Daily Telegraph’s Paul Crawley lashed Hetherington, for his “disgraceful” act and believes players “not doing themselves any favours” when they carry on for a penalty.
“That’s really, really disappointing,” Crawley said on NRL 360.
“What you have there in Jack Hetherington is one of the toughest young men.
