I used to read the same comments about Staines, when talking about Simmons scoring tries "anybody could score them". Only it's not true. Being in the right place at the right time is a skill that sets some winger apart from others.
Lee Oudenryn was a pretty fast winger, considered to be the fastest man in the ARL at one point. Supposedly faster than Martin Offiah, yet his try scoring rate was half that of Martin Offiah when he played ARL. Both of them played for teams lower than mid table. Offiah had a habit of popping up in the right place at the right time.
It doesn't matter if you have a great centre if the winger is in the wrong place. Mansour was always over-running the play, or, when he got it he didn't score because he was too slow. Then there's wingers who are back down the field watching what's going on like a spectator, or, not there as the ball sails over the touch line because they misread the play and move inside.
Give the kid a break, Charlie Staines is 20 years old and has played 16 games. Somehow he has scored 16 tries in spite of being err, slow, playing outside Momoroski and apparently having very little talent. He is still learning the game and clearly hasn't finished physically developing. Robert Jennings is 192cm and 106kg, of course he will make more metres. But can he score as many tres and defend as well?
