Yet when teams like the Storm and Roosters win like that all I hear is "good teams find ways to win even when they play bad"

FFS we had 6 players backing up from hard games 4 days earlier and two were rested. I'll take a win any way it comes in that situation.
Two of the players had long flights - there are many reasons that win was a good and important win.

Another is my disckead Bunster colleagues cant over take us for another week...

Lafai and Nene both did excellent work for our first and third tries. A lot of setup, particularly the first one with Nene's amazing kick and Lafais amazing pass
They really were fantastic in those plays. And the footwork Nene showed when Lafai put him away earlier was exceptional. Shame the pass was off, but both of their form is trending up. Lafai is really worrying defences when he’s got got some space to work with.

How great was it to see the passion in Graham at the end & obviously the respect from his team mates. For those saying we didn’t deserve to win, they were the better side blah blah blah. Well over the years we have been on the other side so I’m not complaining. A couple of points if I may.
Their first try was forward.
Hayne scored after a VERY ORDINARY penalty.
The bunker overrule was strange but maybe Luc will learn in future to get up celebrating.
Anyway Fu*k I hate parra
Absolutely correct, that pass from Mannah to French for the try was forward. I can't believe the commentators didn't pick it up.

Watched at the pub for 70 & walked out red faced and quite peeved. Check score with 3 to go & rush to put on Grandstand and Moore is calling us home.
I should have a bit more faith, but we lose those games 99% of the time since back to 2013.
Stoked but still shocked watching the highlights at how that ended..
This side is gutsy and extremely capable on its day. Just need the halves to switch on more than they do, felt they bludged it mostly tonight, fatigue aside.
Dufty was enormous & Host/Leilua gave a good account of themselves.
Can't wait for the Melbourne one but FMD they need to be much, much better.

Totally wrapped with that win. I thought we were gone with 20 minutes to go. Parra's first try was from a forward pass. It is probably the only break Mannah will make all year too. Parra's third try was also due to a dubious penalty.

We don't play well from behind. We are good front runners.

Dufty was a match winner tonight and clear best St George player tonight. I think his confidence will continue to grow. The kick return that he split Parra open and made it back to around their 20 meter mark was good to watch. I want to see more of him making breaks in open play.

Host looked to handle first grade well tonight and Lucky also did too.

I am not taking too much notice of Parra's position on the ladder. Tonight they had their best backline in. They started the season off as 4th favourites for the comp. There are no easy games. I am very happy with the 2 points.

Dragons get out of jail against game Eels

TOUGH NIGHT: Dragons forward Jack de Belin. Picture: Adam McLean

THE Dragons have produced plenty of memorable performances this season. This this wasn't one of them, but it was enough to edge out Parramatta 20-18 with two tries in the final six minutes to get out of jail.

Four days after copping the brunt of criticism for Queensland's loss in Origin II Ben Hunt endured a mixed night, but managed to lay on Euan Aitken's 74th minute try with well-weighted grubber.

Gareth Widdop was also hit and miss backing up from the Denver Test, but produced two touches of pure class for both of Matt Dufty's try, including the grubber that laid on the match-winner under the sticks with four minutes to play.

It was an otherwise mixed night for the rest of the Dragons rep contingent with Jack de Belin left clutching at his knee and elbow at various stages of the first half while Paul Vaughan was placed on report for an attempted trip on David Gower five minutes into the second half.

They, along with the rested Tyson Frizell, will now have 13 days off ahead of game three which will leave coach Paul McGregor without his Origin contingent for next week's away clash with Melbourne.

It denied Parramatta just their fourth win of the season, and was a bitter pill to swallow for coach Brad Arthur after his side largely out-enthused and out-hustled the competition leaders only to have victory snatched from them at the death.

The Eels led 12-2 at the 37-minute mark on the back of tries to Bevan French and Nathan Brown, only for the Dragons to peg the margin back with a spectacular try to Dufty four minutes before halftime.

Widdop provided the bat back of an in-field kick from Nene Macdonald for Tim Lafai who found Matt Dufty for the four-pointer. It was the one bright spot in an otherwise pedestrian opening stanza for the Dragons, but it was enough to cut the halftime margin back to four through Widdop's conversion.

Jarryd Hayne barged across off a deft ball from Gutherson, who converted for a 18-8 lead with still more than 30 minutes to play. It looked like it would be enough before Aitken and Widdop crossed in the final six minutes to snatch an unlikely victory.

Report, Video | St George Illawarra Dragons steal the points as Parramatta Eels go down 20-18
  • Dragon's Den

Late show: Dragons fullback Matt Dufty swoops to win the game for St George Illawarra. Picture: Adam McLean

  • For more than 70 minutes it appeared that it was Parramatta who were top of the table and St George Illawarra the cellar dwellers.

But if the sign of a top team is finding a way to win when not at their best, then the Dragons will take much out of their last-gasp 20-18 win over the Eels on Thursday night.

St George Illawarra had plenty going against them. With a number of players backing up after the NRL’s stand alone representative weekend the Dragons looked flat. Coach Paul McGregor opted to rest Tyson Frizell while Leeson Ah Mau was ruled out after returning late from international duty with New Zealand in the US.

On a cold, wet and windy night in Wollongong, the Dragons looked a shadow of the team who had stormed to the NRL’s summit after 15 rounds.

But two tries in the final seven minutes saw St George Illawarra break the Eels’ hearts and continue their march towards the minor premiership, breaking a six-match losing streak against Parramatta in the process.

St George Illawarra opened the scoring against the run of play through a Gareth Widdop penalty goal after Parramatta had dominated early field position.

The Eels took the lead on 25 minutes when Tim Mannah jinked past an over-committed James Graham 25 metres out from his own line. Mannah stormed down field before finding Bevan French in support who raced away to score under the posts.

That's not something you see every day! #NRLDragonsEels 8-12 with 3 minutes until the break.#TelstraPremiership#NRLpic.twitter.com/tq5rifgx0t

Parramatta were in again eight minutes later when Nathan Brown crossed for his first try of the season. A poor read in defence from Ben Hunt on his try line allowed Corey Norman to find Brown with a classy short pass.

St George Illawarra needed to respond before half-time and did so with one of the tries of the season.

A Paul Vaughan offload saw Widdop find Tim Lafai, with the centre sending Nene Macdonald down the touch line. The giant winger kicked back in field, with Widdop batting back the loose ball for Lafai who found Matt Dufty in support on the inside allowing the speedy fullback to streak away and score.

But just as it looked as though the Dragons were back in the game, a flat start to the second half allowed Parramatta to reestablish a 10-point lead.

    It's not over yet!#NRLDragonsEels 14-18 with 6 minutes remaining. #TelstraPremiership#NRLpic.twitter.com/JansRUGdXy

Jarryd Hayne did brilliantly to touch down seven minutes after the break, showing great strength to hold off Kurt Mann and Vaughan to wrestle his way to the line.

The Dragons went close to reducing the deficit 12 minutes from full-time when Luciano Leilua barged over down the short side on the last tackle. On-field referee Ben Cummins ruled a try only for senior review official Ashley Klein to overrule the decision, with Norman somehow holding up Leilua and sliding him into touch.

St George Illawarra refused to quit, with Hunt rolling a tidy grubber kick into the in-goal area for Euan Aitken to touch down just short of the dead ball line on the back of a Dufty break to give the Dragons hope.

It was a brave decision from Hunt to kick early in the tackle account. It was almost an identical scenario to that late in State of Origin II, when the Queensland No.7 rolled the ball dead in goal. This time he executed the play perfectly to set up a grandstand finish.

It's not over until it's over!

Dufty gets a double and the @NRL_Dragons take the lead with 2 minutes remaining.#NRLDragonsEels 20-18. #TelstraPremiership#NRLpic.twitter.com/czL4HBQL07

And with three minutes remaining, a Tariq Sims bust gave the Dragons field position. A scramble on the last play saw the ball end up with Widdop, who showed incredible vision to roll a short kick in behind the Eels’ line for Dufty to race through and score under the posts.

The Dragons will now put their feet up before travelling to Melbourne to face the Storm next Friday night.

They will need to be greatly improved against Melbourne. But they remain top of the NRL table for at least another week as the season reaches its climax.

    The Saints continue to march.

    Leader Scoreboard

St George Illawarra Dragons 20 (Matt Dufty two, Euan Aitken tries. Gareth Widdop four goals)

    defeated

Parramatta Eels 18 (Bevan French, Nathan Brown, Jarryd Hayne tries. Clint Gutherson three goals)

    at WIN Stadium, Wollongong

Leader man of the match: Matt Dufty (Dragons)

Dragons’ next three: Storm (away), Tigers (home – Kogarah), Cowboys (away)

MATCH REPORT

Dragons stage great escape to beat Eels

St George Illawarra halfback Ben Hunt overcame his State of Origin demons to inspire a great escape by the NRL competition leaders against last-placed Parramatta at WIN Stadium on Thursday night.

The Dragons scored two tries in three minutes to snatch a 20-18 win after it had appeared that Origin and the representative round would take its toll on a team which has been at the top of the Telstra Premiership ladder since the opening round.

Like most of his teammates, Hunt was flat and the Queensland halfback's kicking game was below his usual standards for large parts of the game. But he produced a try for centre Euan Aitken that kick-started the team just six minutes before fulltime.

With Aitken pouncing on the perfectly weighted grubber to put the Dragons back in the game trailing 18-14, fullback Matt Dufty then secured the win when he dived on a kick from captain Gareth Widdop in the 76th minute.

Hunt and Widdop were among seven St George Illawarra players backing up from the representative weekend, with forwards Paul Vaughan, Jack de Belin and James Graham also playing their second game in five days, while Tyson Frizell and Leeson Ah Mau were rested.

NSW Origin forward Paul Vaughan will have a nervous wait to see how the match review committee views his tripping of Eels forward David Gower.

Vaughan was placed on report and a grade one charge would be a $1,500 fine but grade two would mean two matches. The Blues team for Origin III at Suncorp Stadium on July 11 will be named next week.

The Eels dominated the opening exchanges but failed to capitalise after inexcusable errors by forwards Nathan Brown and Daniel Alvaro, who both lost possession attempting to play the ball metres from the try line.

The first time the Dragons got near the same position they came away with the first points of the game after captain Gareth Widdop kicked a 14th minute field goal.

Parramatta had another missed opportunity when winger Bevan French knocked on attempting to intercept a pass from Widdop to centre Tim Lafai midway through the first half, while hooker Cameron King had to dodge three teammates to kick out of dummy half.

Widdop also failed to finish an early try-scoring opportunity, when he put down a pass from Nene Macdonald with the line wide open. But the Dragons kick-chase game kept the Eels under pressure and it appeared only a matter of time before the home team scored.

Instead it was Parramatta who got the first try of the match in the 24th minute after veteran prop Tim Mannah beat Jeremy Latimore and pushed off Jack de Belin to make a long range break before drawing Dufty to send French racing away off a pass that appeared forward.

Brown crossed six minutes later after running into a hole created by five-eighth Corey Norman to put the Eels ahead 12-2.

However, Dufty put St George Illawarra back into the game by finishing a spectacular try three minutes before halftime after Lafai made a break on his own 40 metre line and linked with Macdonald, who kicked infield.

Widdop outleapt Eels fullback Clint Gutherson to tap the ball back to Lafai, who passed to Dufty and the Dragons fullback raced over the try line to score.

If St George Illawarra fans, who had braved the wet and cold conditions in Wollongong, had expected their team to kick into gear in the second term they would have been disappointed as mistakes crept in the Dragons game.

A Jarryd Hayne try in the 48th minute extended Parrmatta's lead to 18-8 and a huge upset was suddenly on the cards.

Interchange forward Luciano Leilua appeared to have got the Dragons back in the game 12 minutes before fulltime when he forced his way over the Eels line. But video referee Ashley Klein ruled that he had failed to ground the ball - due to Jarryd Hayne's hand underneath - and disallowed the try.

However, the Dragons couldn't be denied when Aitkin pounced on the Hunt grubber and Dufty scored his second for the game and ninth for the season.

News & Notes: St George Illawarra had six players backing up from representative games last weekend.... forwards Tyson Frizell and Leeson Ah Mauwas rested... Bevan French has now scored six tries in his past four games against the Dragons... Prop James Graham played his 150th NRL game.

Sure they played like crap, we all saw that, but we also saw them pull a win out of the fire when everyone was certain they’d lose.
That’s rare for a Dragons team lately and it should be applauded.

I’m yet to see a description of the game on the competition table, just 2 points.
Few years ago when Adam Scott won a major and didn’t play well,. His mentor, Greg Norman told him. “You some pretty, you some ugly, but you won”. That’s what we did tonight. Well done dragons
