I would like ford to replace Allgood so we potentially have someone that can play wide at a pinch on the bench but it seems as though allgood will be rewarded for his years of cc service with a first grade jersey. He can bring nothing to the team otherwise he would have made the big time many weeks ago So why not give a kid a go its the only way to see if they have potential -- and they do need more than 1 game at first grade so maybe Timm should have been thrown in ahead of allgood . or for that matter ford If luc doesnt stand up and have a big one he must go back to cc we cant carry him anymore ( but what do I know compared to supercoach )

Ahead of the Dragons' match up against the Melbourne Storm, relive some the two clubs' classic matches.

St George Illawarra Dragons 34 defeated Melbourne Storm 14
Round 9. Sunday, May 6, 2018
Jubilee Oval, Kogarah

The Dragons blew the Storm off the park in this 20-point thrashing, in a game propelled by Gareth Widdop's perfect goal kicking record.

Along with converting the four tries scored, Widdop nailed a further five penalty goals to it nine two-pointers from nine attempts, much to the delight of the Kogarah faithful.

The first half saw an energetic opening from the Dragons. They went up 10-0 in the 15th minute courtesy of two penalty goals and a strong Euan Aitken try off a nicely delayed Ben Hunt short ball.

The final period saw Aitken bag his second, before two late tries to Josh Addo-Carr reduced the deficit, though the result was never in doubt.

The match also saw the debut of hooker Reece Robson while Jeremy Latimore found himself the talk of punters around the country after making contact with Cameron Smith's crown jewels.

St George Illawarra Dragons 30 drew with Melbourne Storm 30
Round 14. Saturday, June 15, 2002
WIN Stadium, Wollongong

80 minutes wasn't enough to separate the two combatants in this unique match.

Both teams went toe-to-toe throughout the match, exchanging blows and never letting the other out of their reach. When the half-time siren sounded, it was the Storm who held a narrow 18-14 lead.

The Dragons out scored the Storm six tries to five, but goal kicking came into play with Mark Riddell (1/2) and Aaron Gorrell (2/4) failing to give the Dragons the edge.

Matt Orford starred for the Storm scoring two tries and converting 5/6 before the referee called time on the match with the scores locked. Golden point never existed back then so the sides would be forced to share the spoils.

Melbourne Storm 20 defeated St George Illawarra Dragons 18
Grand Final. Sunday, September 26, 1999
Stadium Australia

A classic grand final of the modern era, the Melbourne Storm produced a famous comeback filled with guts, persistence and knock-outs.

The Dragons had the edge over the Storm all year, trumping the newly minted side on both meetings during the 1999 season. The first half followed the script many expected with the Dragons claiming a 14-0 lead at half-time via tries to Nathan Blacklock and Craig Fitzgibbon.

In front of a monster 107,999 crowd, the Dragons scored first in the second half thanks to now coach Paul McGregor. However, a try to Ben Roarty in the 57th minute reduced the gap to four points and put the Storm on the attack.

With four minutes remaining, Brett Kimmorley put a cross-field kick up for Craig Smith who collected the ball – and the arm of Dragons winger Jamie Ainscough. Smith would be knocked out in the process of scoring as a result.

After much deliberation the referees deemed the incident to be a penalty try, levelling the scores at 18-all. Matt Geyer kicked the match-winning conversion from in front of the posts.

Five Things: Round 16 v Storm

The St George Illawarra Dragons come up against the competition-leading Melbourne Storm on Thursday night at WIN Stadium, Wollongong. With both teams heavily weakened from State of Origin, the outcome of the match is far from certain.

The missing 11

The State of Origin decider is just around the corner with New South Wales striving to retain the title from an equally desperate Queensland team. However the commitment of five Dragons to the game means they will be sorely missed at the Dragons. Tyson Frizell, Paul Vaughan, Tariq Sims, Ben Hunt and Corey Norman were all named in their respective State of Origin sides and will miss the Dragons clash. Although Sims will now miss both games due to suspension. The Storm are without Josh Addo-Carr, Will Chambers, Cameron Munster, Christian Welch, Dale Finucane and Felise Kaufusi.

Chopped and changed

With the Origin contingent mentioned above missing from the team, the Dragons will rely on its depth. Jai Field and Darren Nicholls headline these changes; the Canterbury Cup Dragons halves have been given the chance to showcase their partnership in the NRL. The pair have guided the CC Dragons to the top two spots on the ladder and will look to continue that partnership in first grade.

Jeremy Latimore and Korbin Sims form a new look front row, while Blake Lawrie and Luciano Leilua shift to the back row. The bench also features plenty of new faces that include Josh Kerr. Recent signing Patrick Kaufusi and journeyman Mitch Allgood will make their club debuts for the club.

Nicholls' second chance

A seasoned veteran of the rugby league lower grades, Darren Nicholls will get his second opportunity in the NRL against the same team he debuted against last year. Nicholls faced the Storm in Round 17, 2018 in a high-scoring 82-point thriller.

Nicholls was initially a Wests Tigers Under-20s player way back in 2008 before playing two years in France. He returned to Australia to play for Wyong before he linked with the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2013.

Joining the Broncos in 2014, he linked up again with the Rabbitohs the season following before re-joining Brisbane in 2016. Nicholls would be a Panther in 2017 where he captained the team to NRL State Championship success.

Nicholls signed a two-year deal with the Dragons last year, with the Red V handing the then 29-year-old his long-anticipated NRL debut.

In what was an emotional debut, Nicholls was captured tearing up and embracing his family after the match. For the second time around in his 11-year senior rugby league career, Nicholls will do everything he can to get secure his maiden NRL victory.

Storm in the ‘Gong

There aren’t too many areas the Melbourne Storm don’t dominate. Leading the NRL in both attack and defence, on top of boasting the most tries scored and goals converted is enough to worry most teams.

The Storm haven't been able to find their feet at WIN Stadium however, winning just five of 11 matches. With plenty to play for, the Dragons will be determined to maintain this advantage over the Storm on Thursday.

Walters debuts

While the Dragons are fielding rookies in the halves, so too are the Melbourne Storm. Billy Walters, son of Queensland Origin coach Kevin Walters, will make his NRL debut at the age of 25.

Stemming from a rich rugby league pedigree, the impact Walters has on his first NRL game will be an interesting watch.

I am going to watch this game without any expectation. The result doesn’t concern me, but heart says Saints by 12, brain says Storm by a lot.
Lucky better play 100% better then last game, Duffy is Duffy.
One last thing, 7:50 at Win on a Thursday night, stupid, stupid.

I have already warned my 11 yr old son to prepare for a thrashing and not to take it to heart; no doubt he will get another ribbing at school on Friday.

Looking forward to this game. A chance to see what Nicholls and Allgood will do. Opportunity for Kaufusi. Latimore there to put pressure on Cameron Smith.

Storm are deserved favourites but Dragons are not without hope.

This...get them to do a Tariq on Cam Smith and take him out of the game. Lats and Allgood whoever will only miss a couple. This is really our only hope

100% agree on Timm. Allgood hasn't played an NRL game since 2014 and has no future in our team. It would have been good to at least see how Timm handled the step up, but I guess that would require some foresight, courage and planning from our coach.

Allgood hasn’t played FG since 2014 wow
This is such a Mary decision
We can add this to that “ dynamic” centre Maranta who hadn’t played FG for 1000 days

Is Widdop going to finally put on a jumper and play for us this weekend. He is obviously fooling everyone and posing as Matt Allgood. Hope so ;)

Agree.
It's mind boggling that Allgood, who hasn't played 1st grade for 5 yrs, is selected ahead of Timm for this game.
Even though some consider Timm "average", Allgood must be considered a poor at the very least.

Timm is the CC competition leader in:
All runs. Allgood not in top 50
Run metres. Allgood not in top 50
PCM. Allgood not in top 50

Timm is also 3rd for total tackles made, with Allgood not in top 50.

Yes, Timm has a few things to work on, but on what basis is Allgood a superior choice for this game other than experience 5yrs ago? Another Maranta reasoning.

Both Timm and Allgood are off contract this year. It doesn't take much imagination to see who they will re-sign or wether one would want to re-sign

Those stats are incredible !!!
It defies logic that Mary does not know that or he chooses to ignore it

If I was Timms I would not be happy

If Timm doesn’t stay I will be filthy. Is there an option for an extension? I hope Nicholls has a big game I like the way he builds pressure with his kicking game.

The info re Allgood & Nicholls combined with the selection of Maranta and the continuing saga of Latimore just shows how far we have fallen and how easy it is to get a Big Rev V jumper.
We have had many pie eaters play for the club but normally it is a team full of them rather than a basically good squad with a few pie eaters squeezed in on a constant basis.
At least with a team full of pie eaters the expectation was always low and the consequences of a good win didn't raise them.

Good post DS. Again what defies logic is Hornby & Young not shoving these statistics under his nose and push the case for a guy on the way up , not the way down? If & when ( I hope ) we change coaches it has to be these 2 leeches as well. Both now have been on the clubs parole for nearly 20 years and in coaching what evidence is there of their contribution ?

Allow him the day off and then get McGregor to send him a sick note for the teacher.
He's good at making excuses for losses.
