Round 18: Team List V Warriors @ Commbank

Of course it does. He likes to have cover for the backs. When Matto is back, Marata will start from the bench and be that cover.

So you might not agree to a back on the bench, but plenty do it, so he's not Robinson Crusoe.

You don't like it that #17 does not get used ? But why take someone off, if your 13 on the paddock have gas ?
I’d have Cartwright as that utility that can cover backs and forwards and an impact player.

As for using the whole 17, he’s the only coach I know that only uses 16 regularly. Other coaches seem to use their bench rotations better.

Is that a perception or a fact ?

If that was the case then there would be results were we have been run down or rolled over in the last 20 mins.

Which game is a perfect example of us losing and having an unused back on the bench that cost us the match ? Is there one ?
Possibly... but it could also be telling at other times in the game, where the gassed forwards have been left on too long due to only using 2.5 forwards from the bench e.g. around the 25min mark of the first half, 10mins either side of half time.

Forwards being gassed doesn't just show up through scores in the final 20mins of a match - it's down to how the coach uses (could otherwise use) the bench throughout the match.

I have to say for someone who has served our club so well Nathan Brown is being treated very poorly. Not picking him despite being one of the best 17 players in the team is akin to bullying. I don’t see how we’re any shot at the title if Brown isn’t in the side considering how much of a drop off in forward quality there is after the starting 13.
I don't get all the Nathan Brown hate either. BA probably has him confused with an ex Warriors coach.

Yes it is totally subjective, as we don't have access to the telemetry data that the club does. You would hope that they read it and act accordingly however I do remember one game this year where it was plain to see that lane was absolutely buggered but stayed out for another 10 minutes before he was subbed.
And BA has gone on record to say that his starting 13 could all play the 80 if needed.
Given the time he gives the subs, it seems he doesn't trust his 14-17 too much, with the exception of Marata when he is there
I wouldnt trust the 14-17 that we have on the bench this weekend.

You’d be Carty’s besty then.

We've lost 6

Sharks on the bell.
Tigers on the bell.
Cowboys by a cricket score.
Roosters in a tight match.
Dogs by a cricket score.
Bunnies by a cricket score.

That's a flawed argument. Having tired forwards doesn't necessarily equate to being run down in the last 20 minutes. It could be (as in Sharks, Tigers, Roosters) that we were just too tired to put in the extra effort needed to win - or tiredness led to mistakes which prevented us from winning. Could also be that the games we've won, we could have won by more if we weren't so tired.

Agree. If we are down by a few and can't make any inroads as far as scoring Bryce would scare opposition coming on. Makatoa or JA would not. There would be plenty of games Bryce wouldn't be needed but games when you need some magic he could provide it.
10 to go and down by 4 and struggling to crack the defense who would you throw on. Big Makatoa, JA, Opacic or Bryce?

I'm feeling like BA has tried Bryce off the bench and decided he doesn't cut it for what he thinks we need?

If only our #17 benchie could give dummy half service and middle defence (to cover Mahoney when he needs a spell) AND cover mid-game backline/spine injuries, then we'd be sweet!

It sounds like we’re all guessing.

the problem last week was that who then covers Marata in the forwards? ..... he did bring Nrown in which helped, but otherwise it was Maka and Rodwell only
Yeah that's the point. If we didn't have Opacic on the bench we could have had an extra bopper. When Marata is in the side we don't need to carry a back on the bench

Is playing Paulo tomorrow smart? BA said that Paulo basically demanded it in the pre-season that he isn’t rested after origin matches and BA said to counter that they have had games where they’ve chosen not to flog him (with our fantastic bench rotation now doubt).

I’d rest him and play Brown. We won’t even compete without Paulo against the top teams
