Round 19 vs Souths

If Saints manage to jag a win tonight, the heat will be off Mary for a while. For the first time in my life, I want to see Saints get rolled...and for a big score as well....what a sad and terrible thing to think and say :(

And because they are the rabbits, right on schedule, they will fek up the “Sack Mary” program and find a way to lose.

Mary is praying that they won’t kick in play or sledge hunt about soo.

About that resting:

“ if hunt played and got injured, I would be in bad trouble. Better to freshen him up”

Nice one Mary, the entire effing season was on the line. There was no tomorrow. Millions of dollars wasted so Hunts feelings weren’t hurt.

You freshened him up all right, got him recharged and ready, firecracker ready......for mad Monday.

Mary, there are good times to rest players and bad times to rest players. This was a bad time. Do you have questions about this? Does it make any sense?!

Worst coaching decision since 1908, embarrassing also.

Mary might have to take up the meth and sniff petrol to get his coaching judgment back.

Right now, I am really looking forward to this game. Best team on paper we've had since the early rounds.

The media beat up received this past week should be enough motivation for the playing group.

I hope the players really want this game
for themselves and their supporters.

Dragons specials tonight.

Duffy only in 17 as cover for Widdop if he goes down.
We would be better off with Ford on the bench. If Widdop gets injured then:
Norman to 6
Lomax to 1
Aitken to 5
Ford to 3
McGregor is making it up as he stumbles along.
Coming out after the event and rationalizing Hunt's omission last week under the guise of "player welfare" just shows what an imposter he is.
If he was really that concerned about player welfare, he would have used the bench better over the last 4 5 seasons and not flogged our forwards to exhaustion playing his famous bush footy "Power Game".
What irks me more than anything else this year - after you cut through all BS and the excuses - is our defence.
Conceding an average of 24 points a game is an indefensible fact.
Even if half your team were injured, there is no excuse for that statistic for a club like St. George.
That is akin to hoisting the white flag.
If Johnston and the Board would deal with facts instead of excuses and fluff, they would sack this ring in and turn the page.

There's a lot riding on this game tonight, in more ways than one.
I'd say that game results no longer matter. What matters is that we do all we can to sort out the roster for 2020 and beyond. SGI seem to be very short-sighted on selections; we need to select and stick with players who are the future of our club.

Five things: Round 19 v Rabbitohs

Ahead of our must-win clash against the South Sydney Rabbitohs on Friday night, here are five things to looks out for.

Remember the name

From the St George Dragons' SG Ball team to the NRL development player squad in less than a year, Jason Saab continues his meteoric rise in rugby league and will make his NRL debut for the Dragons.

At just 18-years-old and standing at 195cm tall, the talented winger has played for the NSW Under-18s and Australian Schoolboys in the past. But it has been his standout performances in the Canterbury Cup this season which jolted his name into contention.

Since scoring two tries on debut in Round 7, Saab has gone on to collect six tries, eight line-breaks, two try assists, 19 tackle breaks and averaged 151 running metres in his eight appearances.

Saab's debut in the NRL is definitely something to keep a close eye on.

Gareth's inspirational return

Dragons captain Gareth Widdop returns to the side after making a swift recovery from shoulder surgery.

Widdop injured his shoulder in the Round 3 victory against the Brisbane Broncos this year. The 30-year-old initially wasn't expected back until the final rounds of the season, but worked harder than ever on the sideline to fast track his recovery.

Dragons Head of Athletic Performance Nathan Pickworth told dragons.com.au that Widdop's upper body strength and fitness has actually increased compared to the start of the season.

This highlighting his determination to wear the Red V once more before leaving for the Super League.

Widdop’s return to the side also pushes Corey Norman to fullback while Darren Nicholls falls out of the team.

Now or never

Seven rounds remain before the top eight is decided and the 2019 finals get underway.

Such is the competitiveness of this season; the Dragons are currently only two wins outside the top eight but also two wins off the bottom of the ladder. It’s possible for the Dragons to storm home and ride a wave of momentum into the finals, but it has to start against the Rabbitohs.

Dragons support Beanies for Brain Cancer Round

Points galore

The Rabbitohs have claimed the better record over the Dragons in recent years with five wins from the last seven encounters, but the Dragons have scored more points against South Sydney than any other team.

The most points St George Illawarra have ever scored in a single match was against the Rabbitohs in 2002 when the Dragons scored 11 tries and won 58-16. While overall since 1999, the Dragons have scored 1,026 points against the Rabbitohs, with the next closest being the Newcastle Knights with 901.

With a revamped back-line and a star playmaker back, keep in mind the Dragons' point-scoring record against the Bunnies.

Last time we were there

You only need to cast your mind back to Round 13 to find when the Dragons last graced the field of ANZ Stadium.

The Dragons trounced the Bulldogs 36-12 in a confident display featuring a Ben Hunt masterclass. Hunt finished off a brilliant team try and also threw two line-break assists and one try assist in the victory.

Throwback Thursday: Round 19 v Rabbitohs

The Dragons travel to ANZ Stadium to play traditional rivals the South Sydney Rabbitohs on Friday night. Here are some classic matches in recent years between the two sides.

St George Illawarra Dragons 22 defeated South Sydney Rabbitohs 18
Round 19. Monday, July 22, 2013
ANZ Stadium

There wasn't anything to split the two sides at the conclusion of regular time, leaving it up to Brett Morris to slice over in golden point and win an exciting game for the Dragons.

The first 40 minutes were a clear indication that both sides were equally matched with a Rabbitohs try the only points recorded in the opening half. The Steve Price coached Dragons came into the second half with the wind in their sails and bounced back into the contest with three tries.

The Rabbitohs were able to level the scores 18-all when the full-time siren sounded.

Extra time saw the two sides traded blows desperately searching for the match winner. Morris took centre stage and picked up his second for the day, winning the match for the Dragons in the process.

St George Illawarra Dragons 16 defeated South Sydney Rabbitohs 0
Round 6. Monday, April 18, 2011
ANZ Stadium

The Dragons kept the Rabbitohs scoreless for the first and only time between the two sides in this tough and gritty victory.

Despite boasting the strike power of 2011 top try-scorer Nathan Merritt, the Rabbitohs couldn’t break the Dragons defence in front of 22,770 people.

However it also took over 40 minutes for the Dragons to break the deadlock with the only points of the first half coming in the form of a Jamie Soward penalty goal.

Tries to Darius Boyd and Mark Gasnier in the second half shot the Dragons further into the lead with Soward adding the extras on both occasions to complete a brave victory.

Jayden Sullivan promoted to full-time squad

St George Illawarra Dragons 42 defeated South Sydney Rabbitohs 10
Round 9. Saturday, May 7, 2005
WIN Stadium, Wollongong

The Dragons scored eight tries in this one-sided affair against the Rabbitohs in Wollongong.

There was little South Sydney could do to stop the rampage as Matt Cooper and Nick Youngquest crossed over for doubles.

The scoreboard showed 22-6 at the break with the Dragons in full control of the match. The second half continued the same as the first, with the on-fire Dragons inflating the score line.

Three different goal kickers took aim at the posts, with Michael Ennis kicking three goals from five attempts, Mark Gasnier hitting two from three goals and Ben Hornby missing his only attempt.

Mary stands firm over Hunt's contentious rest

A lack of match fitness after four months on the sideline is behind Dragons captain Gareth Widdop's return at five-eighth alongside a refreshed Ben Hunt and the decision to switch Corey Norman to fullback for Friday night’s match against South Sydney.

Widdop started the season at fullback, with Norman partnering Hunt in the halves, but after 18 weeks on the sideline recovering from shoulder surgery the English star is set to finish his NRL career at five-eighth before joining Warrington next season.

Dragons coach Paul McGregor said Norman had offered to switch to fullback to accommodate Widdop’s return in a new look back three with Zac Lomax returning from a broken thumb on the left wing and Jason Saab making his NRL debut on the right flank.

"The [running] loads you do have at fullback are really high and Normy wanted to go back there to be honest," McGregor said.

"He was keen and Gareth wanted to play six and with the timing of the year it's important you get players comfortable in positions. You might see us mix it up a bit.

"Gareth's our captain and he's had six really strong years here. It shows really good leadership, selflessness and determination for him to want to go back on the field and finish the year."

Why McGregor changed his back three

McGregor said he was looking forward to Hunt’s return after a disappointing performance against Canberra when backing up from the State of Origin series decider five days earlier.

Hunt made more than double the number of tackles at hooker for Queensland than he normally does playing halfback for St George Illawarra and he also found it difficult switching between the two positions on a regular basis during the Origin period.

The decision to rest Hunt from last Friday night’s 40-14 loss to Penrith has been criticised but McGregor said he preferred to have his star playmaker miss the game if he was fit and focused upon his return, and he took ownership of the decision.

"A lot's been said about it over the last week, it was a conversation between me and Ben and I made the decision," McGregor.

"The loads that we looked at that he took playing Origin, along with backing up five days later, for the welfare of the player and betterment of the team to finish the season well it was time for Ben not to play.

"If I put Ben on the field and he was injured through fatigue and we didn't have him this week, or for the rest of the year, how would that have looked?

"The decision was made and we need to move on. Ben's now had a 12-day break between games, he's refreshed and ready to go."

While there has been a lot of focus on McGregor’s decision to rest Hunt after the physical and mental toll of playing three Origin matches for Queensland at hooker, it has been on edges where the Dragons have struggled recently.

Fijian winger Mikaele Ravalawa has played 16 NRL matches since debuting at the start of the season, while Jonus Pearson’s seven appearances is more than he had played in either of his three years with Brisbane before joining St George Illawarra.

Rabbitohs v Dragons - Round 19

Penrith left centre Brent Naden and right winger Brian To’o each scored two tries, while it was felt that Ravalawa, Pearson and fullback Matt Dufty didn’t do enough to help the Dragons get out of their own end at the start of sets.

"Mika has played 16 games in his debut season and it is pretty hard to do every week so he is not playing at all this weekend, he is just working hard at training and doing a bit of recovery there," McGregor said.

"Jonus has had a couple of games that weren’t up to the performance needed so he is going back to reserve grade to work on his game and with Gareth coming back in Duft moves to the interchange and Duft has done some good things but there are some parts of his game that need to improve as well.

"Zac had to come into the team. I think Zac is a very good player of the future whether that is at centre or fullback. He has a liking to play fullback, he has mentioned that numerous amount of times and playing on the wing those first few carries are similar to playing fullback."

How Saab's emergence enable Dragons to snare Norman
Author

Jason Saab grew up playing in a cardinal and myrtle South Sydney-style jersey and his father is a member of The Burrow but the 18-year-old winger hopes Friday night’s debut against the Rabbitohs will be the beginning of a long career with St George Illawarra.

Saab, who played juniors for Merrylands Rams, is considered a future star and Dragons coach Paul McGregor has been waiting patiently all season for him to finally become available for NRL selection this week.

So highly regarded is Saab at St George Illawarra that the club declined the opportunity to sign an established winger at the end of last season in the knowledge that he was coming through the ranks.

The decision enabled the Dragons to bring Corey Norman to the club a season earlier after securing him to replace Gareth Widdop and he is set to play alongside the 195cm Saab for years to come as the rookie winger has been signed until 2022.

St George Illawarra director of rugby league pathways Ian Millward said the club hoped Saab would follow in the footsteps of Jason Nightingale and enjoy a lengthy career with the Dragons.

Rabbitohs v Dragons - Round 19

“We’ve never signed anyone as young on such a long contract but for us it was a no-brainer,” Millward said. “Speed-wise he is really good, he jumps excellently in the air, he is low maintenance off the field and he comes from a good family.

“We knew the club would be looking for taller, bigger wingers so we decided to put him on a four-year contract.”

Halfback Ben Hunt, second-rower Tariq Sims, prop Blake Lawrie and 17-year-old SG Ball playmaker Jayden Sullivan are currently the only other players committed to the club for as long, while prop Paul Vaughan has an option for the 2022 season.

Remarkably, no other club had shown interest in Saab until he was selected for NSW Under 18s last season and he had never been identified by Parramatta for a junior representative team.

Saab came to St George as a 16-year-old and what triggered the interest of Dragons officials wasn’t his performances in games but the results of testing for his acceleration, leap and strength.

“He was right up there with some of the really good players who have come through our ranks,” Millward said. “Then, in his second year of Under 18s, he just got better and better.”

The Eels and other clubs became interested just as St George Illawarra were preparing a deal for Saab but he told officials he didn’t want to play anywhere else.

Why McGregor changed his back three

“He said, ‘The Dragons gave me an opportunity so I want to stay here’,” Millward said. “His dad is a mad Rabbitohs fan. He has come to some meetings with me with his Rabbitohs jumper on and he sits in The Burrow with his mates so it is quite ironic Jason’s first game is against Souths.”

The Dragons decision to sign Saab on a long-term contract was vindicated when he starred at last year’s Australian Secondary Schools championships on the Gold Coast, along with Cronulla centre Bronson Xerri, and was chosen for an end-of-season tour to England.

Jason Saab tasting success as a junior with Merrylands Rams.
After commencing pre-season training in January, the Dragons agreed Saab should start in Under 20s for six weeks before advancing to the Mathew Head-coached Canterbury Cup team.

As one of six development players, Saab could not play NRL before June 30 and McGregor waited until after his commitments with the NSW under 20s team to select him.

“We are having an early look at an exciting talent for the future,” McGregor said. “He has been putting pressure on the players consistently throughout the year in reserve grade with some really good performances but we weren’t allowed to use him earlier.

“He was just playing too well to leave out and we want to give him a taste of first grade now. He can get nice and high, when he gets into open space he is quite quick and defensively he has a good understanding of what he needs to do.”

Meanwhile, Mikaele Ravalawa, injured winger Jordan Pereira and forward Lachlan Timms joined NSW Women’s captain Kezie Apps for a surprise appearance at training for players in the “Score Dragons” community program to announce they had received a St George Bank funding grant.

Now in its sixth season, the “Score Dragons” is a joint initiative between St George Illawarra and The Disability Trust to include players with disabilities in a local Illawarra competition and earned the club the 2015 NRL Community program of the year award.

I hope we flog them and turn our season around the same as Penrith have done.
Love your optimism but we can't make it from here even if we win tonight.
Not even a guarantee if we won all our games to finals so a win just saves Marys ass, like it always does.
They don't wanna play for him anyway, judging from last 2 weeks.
