Damien Cook recognises sole opportunity to outshine Cameron McInnes
Damien Cook will have just one opportunity to put his nose in front of the race for the hotly-contested NSW starting hooker role as South Sydney take on St George Illawarra this Thursday night.
With the Dally M Hooker of the Year set to go
head-to-head against Cameron McInnes in the No.9 jersey, the race for representative honours will start afresh at Jubilee Oval.
Before last year, there had never been such a tight race for the hooker spot made vacant by Nathan Peats' rib injury and concerning form. The pair quickly became the dominant names considered for Brad Fittler's rejuventated side.
While 25-year-old
McInnes quietly turned into one of the NRL's most damaging dummy-halves, the South Sydney star went on to claim both NSW and Australian representative honours.
But the Dally M Hooker of the Year will have just one chance to outshine the dangerous Dragon before Fittler names his State of Origin side for game one.
Speaking to the
Big Sports Breakfast on Wednesday morning, Cook admitted that his biggest challenge to retain the Blues jersey awaits in just the second round of the season.
"I love coming up against (Cam), he's a tough competitor," Cook told the program.
"He puts his body on the line and he always looks very competitive in everything that he does.
"He's a very good hooker of the game and he's keeping me on my toes.
"Obviously the NSW jersey we competed for last year and I was lucky enough to play it and I'd love to do so again. But he's definitely the one who's going to be a reason to why I won't get that chance again.
"So, I'm looking forward to putting in a good performance against him."
Although the pair have approximately three months to prove their worth for a State of Origin cap, it's unlikely that another hooker will rise up to challenge the in-form dummy-halves.
While Cook went from being an uncertain starting No.9 to the proud owner of NSW and Australian jerseys and 2018 Dally M hooker of the Year honours; McInnes wound up some of the most impressive numbers of the season.
The Dragons hooker topped the charts for the most receipts with 2, 794 passes and also made the second highest amount of tackles across the season with 1,147 hits at 91.1 per cent efficiency.
Although McInnes slid just shy of Dally M honours, he was notably the only other New South Welshmen in the running alongside Cook.
South Sydney will take on St George Illawarra at Jubilee Oval on Thursday, March 21 at 7.55pm.
