It defies belief. Surely there is some under the table arrangement going on here. Maybe Saints will get a young Storm discard in the offseason.

Stat attack: Round 21 v Titans
Author
Dragons.com.au dragons.com.au

Tue 6 Aug 2019, 02:37 PM

The Dragons are preparing for a battered and bruised Titans outfit determined to bounce back from their last start 52-point defeat.

As a result of the thumping, the Titans now have the worst ranked defence in the competition having conceded 489 points. Although the Dragons haven't fared much better.

In attack, the Dragons put some distance between themselves and the Gold Coast, boasting the 12th best attack while the Titans claim the 15th-best.

Over 20 matches between the two sides, the Dragons have produced 13 wins while the Titans have won seven. However, the Titans have a solid record at Kogarah winning three of five visits.

In discipline there is nothing to split the two sides, both making 205 errors across the season (8th in the league). But defensive errors could hurt the Titans who have missed the most tackles of any team (557).

Danger man
Ashley Taylor

A lot has been said about the form of Ashley Taylor this season but his lethal attacking skills in previous years still poses a threat to the Dragons.

In 10 appearances this year, Taylor has produced six try assists, four line-break assists and forced three repeat sets.

Off field matters for Taylor has seen him slowly acclimatise back into footy for Intrust Super Cup outfit Tweed Heads.

In two appearances for the Seagulls, Taylor has scored a try and also produced two try assists, four line-break assists and kicked goals at 100 per cent accuracy.

If Taylor can find his form of previous years and capitalise on his strong reserve grade performances then his influence will dramatically help the Titans.

The odd couple: Reynolds and James Graham

Key match-up

Cameron McInnes v Nathan Peats

Two defensive workhorses go head-to-head in this clash of the dummy-halves. While other players in their respective sides shoulder the attacking responsibilities, both McInnes and Peats lead the charge in defence.

McInnes currently tops the NRL for most tackles made (931) at an amazing efficiency of 93.6 per cent (just 26 missed). On top of his defensive work, McInnes also has four try assists and three tries.

Peats missed a large chunk of the year through injury and has only appeared in nine matches this season. In that time he made 377 tackles including an impressive 60-tackle effort last week.

Paul Vaughan v Jarrod Wallace

When Paul Vaughan runs at Jarrod Wallace on Saturday, the collision will be enough to make the stands at Kogarah shake.

Vaughan has established himself as one of the game's best front-rowers and someone who refuses to take a backward step. Averaging over 13 runs a game, 138 metres and 34.1 tackles this season, Vaughan will be hell bent on getting a long-awaited win.

Wallace has been around since 2012 amassing 131 matches in his eight-season career. Wallace relies on his work-ethic and hard-running which has seen him produce 12 runs a game on average and make 437 tackles.

It's been the season from hell for Dragons coach Paul McGregor.

He lost Jack de Belin at the start of the season, Gareth Widdop went down in round three, while James Graham, Tyson Frizell, Corey Norman, Korbin Sims and others were all sidelined at various stages with injuries.

Once they fell into a slump the Dragons never dug themselves out. If they'd just scraped home for a few more wins they'd still be fighting for a finals berth but that ship has well and truly sailed.

The Titans have lurched from bad to worse over the past few weeks and need to take more pride in their performance as a team.

Key match-up
Throughout the Dragons' dire season, inspirational hooker Cameron McInnes has been one player who has never given up. He's pitted against rugged rake Nathan Peats, who is also a tackling machine.

For the Dragons to win
They've tightened up defensively in recent weeks but have hit the wall offensively. Playmakers Norman, Hunt and Widdop have to do a better job of actually making plays, Tariq Sims and Tyson Frizell need to live up to their reputations, while Tim Lafai has to step up and prove he deserves to keep his spot.

For the Titans to win
If last week's hammering from the Roosters doesn't stir some pride and passion in the Titans then it's hard to imagine what will. They have five games remaining in what has been a wretched season and should at least try to finish as strongly as possible for the sake of their fans.

Brett Kimmorley says
Both teams need to show something looking towards 2020. The entire coaching staff of both clubs are probably coaching for their future just as the players are. Gareth Widdop has been a good servant to the Dragons and they will be looking to send him off well. In saying that, I can’t find any reason as to why either side will play well. Dragons by 2

Stat Attack
Dragons captain Gareth Widdop certainly enjoys facing the Titans. In his past two games against Gold Coast, the English five-eighth has produced six try assists, six line break assists, three line breaks, a try and 16 goals.

And another thing ...
Paul Vaughan is one tough hombre. The Dragons prop made one of the more memorable defensive plays of 2019 with his one-handed tackle on Parra's Clint Gutherson last Sunday. Vaughan had just dislocated his finger when Gutherson broke into the clear and a try beckoned if Vaughan hadn't grabbed a handful of his jersey. The finger is back in place and Vaughan is expected to play on Saturday.

Well really thought we would all be surprised and see Timms get a run in the 17 but once again lets keep Lats as his farewell tour rumbles along . At least young ford will get 5 minutes on the field so supercoach can say he has blooded yet another local !!! amazing that our 2 centres of unexcellence are once again numbers 3 and 4 ..... And Blake lawrie cornerstone of the pack cant make the 17 ( injury maybe ) Norman is not a fullback give him number 14 and give Lomax a run there !!!
Once again the supercoach and team selections ... obviously an assisstant must be advising him re picking -- can only get better next year when a new asssisstant can get thrown under the bus !!

It all depends which Titans team turns up to play and what our own intentions are.
Our whole backline is a big worry.
Norman is a fill in any way you look at it.
Rava could be brilliant but he could also make lots of errors and cost us dearly.
Young Saab looks to have the jitters and our centre pairing continues to have issues.
If our forwards can get on top of their pack, we should win.
If not, the Titans are big chance to cause a upset.

Young Saab looks to have the jitters and our centre pairing continues to have issues.
If our forwards can get on top of their pack, we should win.
If not, the Titans are big chance to cause a upset.
Nice analagy but you sound like a journo encouraging people to get to an exciting game
Go easy on Saab..he generally has the pace of a winger we need..confidence will come...with a coach
We have em covered this week

So Lomax was dropped last week.
How the f**k can he not be in the team FFS.
Seriously the bloke is a clown, apologies to WCD.
No he twinged his hammy in the captains run. For some reason they did not rule him out until right up until kick off. He was hundreds to play after Saturday.
How do i know....spoke to Jess Sergis at Corrimal on Sat arvo

Pre-purchase your tickets guys. Going to be a huge crowd.
I just tried to get tickets but all sold out! In fact all flights on Virgin, Jetstar and Qantas out of Sydney to Goldcoast full.
Every Hotel near the stadium no vacancies!
Can't believe that I can't get there.
Ahh well, Go Dragons! Do us fans proud!

Your last chance is to get a free ticket from the coach. But alas! We don't have one.
