St George Illawarra’s fans and members have turned on coach Paul McGregor.

During Sunday’s Round 20 clash with Parramatta at Kogarah, a number of signs could be seen in the crowd on the hill, calling for McGregor to be sacked.

The signs read, ‘Fail Mary’ and ‘Step Down McGregor’.

The Red V were tipped to give the NRL premiership a shake in 2019 but have so far failed to reach the heights expected.

They won’t play a part in the finals series. They’ve played just three finals games since 2011.

McGregor took the reins of the club mid-season in 2014 when his predecessor, Steve Price, failed in the job.


Since then the team has finished 11th, 8th, 11th, 9th, and last year 7th. In 2018 they made it to the second week of finals.

McGregor was handed a contract extension in April which doesn’t expire until the end of the 2021 season.



But it appears a section of the club’s fanbase is keen to show the coach the door much sooner than that.

The frustrating loss ensured the Dragons equalled the club’s record for least wins in a season through 19 rounds set in 2013 and killed off whatever small hope they had of playing in the finals.

“When you’re not winning games of footy, everyone wants to know why and the reasons behind it,” McGregor said.

“Everyone wants to come at you and attack you.”

This should be a great match up of the worst coaches in the NRL.
Mal has no idea how to coach and Mary is only a slight improvement.

I take no comfort from our team continuing to lose and can only hope that with each loss, brings McGregor a step closer to being replaced.

That is why l want a result, this season.
I would like a new beginning for next season.

No one want our board to continue on with McGregor and then sack after 6 or 8 games next season. That ruins next seasons run to the finals. We should start fresh next year.

Our only hope is that we keep losing this season. I hate saying that but its the only way.

Even if they sack him 6 games into the 2020 season , the damage of him controlling our 4 month pre season will have lasting effects into the year. Thats why he should be sent packing now and also and interim coach to give the young guys a go. The media don't report another flaw in Mary : his abominable team selections and favoritism.

No dilemma... I wont upset CC chances. Same old team, same old game plan.
Because you know if I win every game from here on with our best squad firing... it will give me and the team a positive mind set into pre season and the start of next year that things are still are on track at this great club of ours which I am and the players (as you are) so passionate about.
And to top it all off 24 competition points.. you know what i will say next.
We will probably finish 9-10th and only 2 points out of the 8.
There will be 6-7 coaches who wished they were in that position being so close and proves to all a really successful year after facing all the above average distractions.
Thanks for listening.....DS...see you on Saturday where Dragons Footy will smash the titans as i know my men will show pride in that jersey. OPINOF. (Our past is not our future)
