Tanginoa and Ualesi were only on one year contracts, and almost certainly not in the top 25. Terepo re-signed on a multi-year contract and given how much first grade he plays (and how early in the season) would have to be top 25. I think he's a pretty good defender. His tackles per minute are high and missed tackles are low. That seems like a very Brad Arthur attribute for a forward.

His name was also mentioned in the BA interview held the morning after the Hayne defection. BA rattled off a number of core players that needed to be re-signed including Peni.

Yes. However, form wise in the early part Tanginoa and Ualesi would have been on par or slightly ahead of Terepo. Had Watmough been fit Terepo, IMO , would have been the player to miss out on the Top 17. Injuries to the aforementioned players has cemented his position rather than his place in the top 25.

Ualesi has played one NRL game, three years ago (under Stuart). Tanginoa was let go, while Arthur was coach, when he was still under contract.

Meanwhile, Terepo has played over 50 NRL games since Arthur became coach.

He has become a leader in the Mate Ma'a Tonga squad.

Kelepi almost certainly would have played NRL this year if he hadn't hurt himself. I believe Terepo is ahead of him on the depth charts but Kelepi would be ahead of Rory O'Brien and potentially jostling in-line with David Gower under a horses-for-courses policy.

I mean you have the likes of Jarrod Wallace, Tim Browne, Jeremy Latimore, Ava Seumanufagai, Tim Grant, David Shillington, Scott Bolton, James Gavet, Luke Bateman, Clay Priest, Joseph Paulo and Chris Heighington running around as regulars in both Top 8 contender teams and overall title contenders and they mostly fall within the range of player that Terepo is. Sure a few are better but most are about the same and some are worse.

Not sure why the retention of Peni has your nose so far out of joint. Terepo is the sort of player you need to fill-in around your core forwards. His propensity to drop the footy is frustrating at times but it also has improved in 2016 and fans tend to get caught up in past years when bitching about it.

He is far from perfect and we could do better than Peni but odds are you have to pay a chunk more for the difference in talent and consistency.

f**king oath we could do better than that plodder. Not only does he have the ball handling skills of a lesbian, he offers nothing in attack. He is an undersized prop who averages less than 1 tackle bust a game and doesn't offload. He gets smashed every tackle and is more often than not put on his back. If this guy is the core of our future team we are in more trouble than i thought. We need 2 big, powerful forwards who punch holes in the opposition defence, particularly if we are intend on keeping both Mannah and ALvaro

Great post. Our whinging fans seem to think other clubs don't have fringe first graders in their squads. Or because our best forward isn't as good as Andrew Fifita that it's the fault of our least talented top 25 forwards.

Who says he's the core? He's a player with the qualities Arthur wants in a middle forward (speed and work rate) at a price that lets us spend more on stars.

Small and prone to errors?
He's not small, he's just not big. I'm sure his lack of size is related to why he is able to work well in our defensive structure. Plus he is quick.

As for error proneness, he makes about one error every two games. Hardly a game changer.

That argument had merit when we were forking out plenty of coin for a Foran/Hayne. As you have said in the past, we are now in a position to be distributing the cap more effectively throughout the roster. Peni is exactly the type of player we should be upgrading from

I don't think so. We're not going to improve by spending more on fringe first graders. Or by replacing our good depth with the cheapest depth we can find. With the extra cap space we have available we need to use it to time a genuine shot at a premiership.

What? We are if we replace them with genuine first graders

But genuine first graders would cost more than we're paying Terepo. Probably a lot more, and they would require us to involve them more in our gameplan in order to get our money's worth.

Obviously 'involvement' is a zero sum equation. There are limited minutes in a game, and only so many touches and runs to distribute amongst your attackers.
