Because in rugby league a refs calls influences a game much more than a lot of other sports.

Nah, not really. Soccer, where there may only be one goal scored all match, an incorrect offside or foul call is huge. Baseball, the plate umpire is king. Rugby, the ref has huge control over all aspects of the game. etc. League fans are way too obsessed with refs and it cheapens the game. The match threads are full of slagging of the refs, on here the same handful of posters are always complaining that the refs have it out for us, the pre-match threads are full of posters pre-complaining about the refs. It's a bit of a joke, really.

I don't know about those other sports - to me they're all as boring as batshit. But agree that generally the refs are given way too much credit for the outcome of matches.

There's way more rules in League though. You could find a penalty in every other set if you wanted to. Controversies in soccer usually come down to whether there was or was not contact.

possession sways very easily in soccer too, so it's not the biggest deal if you get fouled incorrectly for a tackle or something. if it's in the box or close to the box though then it's a different story. point is, referee calls in league are far more impactful than other sports

Again, I disagree. You are biased because you watch it and you've grown up in the culture of blaming referees for everything. Follow literally any other team ball sport, and you will find a subset of fans always crying about the refs. Just with the NRL, that subset is much larger and is egged on by the commentators.

I agree that ref bashing in the nrl has been popularised by commentators and the media, and it's bad. however what I'm trying to say is that getting penalised in league seems a lot more damaging than other sports because of the advantage the other team gets (having another full set close to your line, building pressure)

Not only that but not all penalties are of equal impact. When you get a penalty on the second tackle 5 metres out from their line, it gives you one extra tackle, that's it, and the opposition gets to reset their defence. It is of no benefit at all. You get one near halfway on the 5th tackle, the benefit is much greater. This is what happened last week. We got a lot of low-benefit penalties and NZ got a lot of high benefit ones, even though the count ended 9-all. The sin bin is meant to compensate for this anomaly, but it wasn't used even though at least 5 or 6 of our 9 penalties were on their line. For this reason and many others as well, penalty counts do not give an accurate indication of who got the rub of the green.

(A) you seem to be of the thinking that in every game, both sides should have an even share of penalties at the same points in time in the same areas of the field. This is such a flawed concept of the game, I don't know where to begin. Refs would have to actually manipulate the game a lot more than you claim they do now for this to happen. In a word: nonsense.

(B) You are always crying about the refs after almost every single game.

(C) "Winning teams in 2018 have been the least penalised sides in their games on just 41.91% of the time, which means conceding more penalties than your opponent actually leads to more success than losses."

"With all the focus on ball handling, completions, conceding penalties and handling errors as being important factors in deciding games, what it all comes down to is go forward. Making metres carrying the ball and from kicks has proven to be more vital than any other aspect of the game."

(Why the f**k can't I even give the name of the site I got this from? Stupid bloody forum.)

In other words, NRL fans are some of the biggest moaners about refs in the sporting world.
