Keen to Sink Teeth into Tigers

Rabbitohs back-rower Ben Lowe and his teammates are keen to sink their teeth into the Tigers this Friday night at ANZ Stadium.
After going down by just two points to 2013 Grand Finalists, the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles, Lowe is looking forward to Friday’s round three clash to fine-tune his side’s performance.
“We’ve got a week of training to put together before we get to Friday night,” said Lowe.
“We’ll be doing our review of the game last week against the Sea Eagles and looking to fine-tune a few little things and making sure we’re in good stead for Friday night.”
While disappointed by the round two result, the Rabbitoh veteran cited a resolve in his team that will see the team start round three with renewed vigour.
“That’s one thing with Souths – we have a bad performance and we don’t normally put two together,” said Lowe.
“We’ll bounce back from it very well I think. The boys are disappointed with the way things went on Friday night.
“We’ll be looking to make sure we’re getting it right this weekend. I’m just looking to get out there off the bench and do my best for the team,” said Lowe.
While the match is not a Rabbitohs home-game, reciprocal rights means that South Sydney Premium and Plus Members receive free entry to the match, in addition to free rail travel to Homebush with their ticket. For Lowe, it translates to the hope that more of the Rabbitohs faithful will be on hand to support his team as they do battle with the Tigers.
“Our Members mean a lot to us coming to our games,” said Lowe.
“If we can get the crowd behind us, it goes a long way in helping us get that win. Momentum’s a big thing and when the crowd’s behind you, it helps with that.”

It'll be interesting to see how Reddy goes, especially against his former club.

Good test for the boys.

If we play like we did against Easts, we'll trash them.

If we play like we did against Manly, things could get ugly.

Souths 1-12

Danger game. We need to stick to our patterns. If we let the Tigers draw us into a game of touch, they'll do us. Our big forwards are our asset here and we can dominate this game up the middle. If we get drawn into a game of touch, our asset will become our weakness as our forwards will run out of gas. The tigers little blokes will then proceed to slice us up.

Burgess boys and Bully up the guts, needing to be tackled in numbers coupled with the likes of Inglis and Merritt looking to capitolise on quick play the balls and offloads should be the order of the day.

So you haven't watched a tigers game this year, nice to see

No doubts the souths forwards are better then the tigers, however we don't have a tiny pack anymore. I'd say we have the biggest bench in the whole comp.

Maguire wary of fast-start Tigers

Despite a reasonable 1-1 start to the 2014 season South Sydney coach Michael Maguire is adamant his side needs to improve over the coming weeks if they are to entrench themselves in the top four on the competition ladder.
And he admitted to being wary of this Friday's opponent the Wests Tigers who he noted had proven exceptionally fast starters in each of their games to date.
Maguire stressed that his troops needed to build on their Round 1 blitzing of last year's premiers the Sydney Roosters and move past their 14-12 loss to the Sea Eagles in Gosford last Friday night.
"I think every game's a tough game in the NRL. If you're slightly off – with just some of the results you see across the games already – you can get burnt," Maguire told NRL.com on Wednesday.

"For us it's just about finding what we did in Round 1 consistently and I was really pleased with that Round 1 performance. Unfortunately we didn't do that against Manly but we just got to keep working towards that.
"Full credit to Manly, they came out and performed. We learnt a lot from that game and comparing that to our first round we had a fair few lessons."
With the Rabbitohs coming up against the Wests Tigers this week, Maguire had nothing but praise for his opponents off the back of the Tigers' 42-12 win over the Titans last weekend.
"I think [the Tigers] are actually a really improved team – I think the way they played on the weekend they start very, very fast. Two weeks in a row they've now scored two or three tries within 10 minutes so we need to be right on our own game to start with," Maguire said.
"Our defence needs to be spot-on this week. They do throw a lot of passes around and a lot of plays at you. Even coming out of yardage they will shift the ball and they get into shape very early so you need to be aware of what's going on."
As for the shift of captain John Sutton to the back row, Maguire said he was happy with the work in progress.
"It's going to take a bit of time in getting the understanding of how you play in the middle – I always have the ability to be able to put him back in the halves if need be so we can utilise that as well," he said.
With Beau Champion dropping back to the NSW Cup, Maguire is excited for veteran Joel Reddy who will play his first game for the Rabbitohs this weekend against his former club.
"'Beauy' himself admitted probably that it wasn't one of his best games [against Manly]. He's spent a lot of time unfortunately last year and through the pre-season with injuries and it's just about game time now and if he goes back and performs he'll get another opportunity," Maguire said.

Hearing Inglis didn't train. Ankle injury?

Good to see Maguire has been watching us play. He's right. This is not the same Tigers team. Round 1 was teething problems. I hope Maguire is able to communicate that to his players because with Souths facing the 2013 GF teams back to back you'd imagine they'd have had one eye on this game since the preseason as a gimme. The Tigers haven't actually been this strong 1-17 since 2011 because of injuries/poor team selections and guys like Gavet and Taupau will be looking for your big guns out there. Don't blink.

Friday night at ANZ Stadium may not be a home-game for the Rabbitohs, but it may as well be according to Head Coach Michael Maguire.
With Members enjoying free rail travel, reciprocal rights, and with the Club edging ever-closer to the 2014 target of 32,000 Members, the Rabbitohs mentor is certain that ANZ Stadium will again be awash with red and green when the side takes on the Wests Tigers this Friday night.
“The truth is, we’re lucky enough to get amazing support wherever we go, but ANZ Stadium is our home ground and we treat it as such,” said Maguire.
“Probably the only thing different for us on Friday is using the other change-room – We just go down the other end and set ourselves up there, but we definitely feel as though it is our home game. We feel at home there and we feel extra drive when we step out onto the field at Homebush in front of all our Members. To us it’s important because we get all our Members out to our games.”
Having gone down to the Sea Eagles in round two in Gosford, Maguire cited that playing the Tigers this Friday in front of a heavily Rabbitohs fan-laden crowd, is an opportunity to tweak his team’s performance and get the game-plan back on track.
“We weren’t happy with our performance last week,” admitted Magurie.
“No doubt our Members felt that too, so it’s up to us to go out there and perform as a team.
“Every team in the NRL on their day has the ability to get a win and we just want to make sure we’re the best prepared that we can be, do all the little things right, get our plays right and hopefully get our Members out there excited.”
In a matter of days, Maguire and his coaching staff de-constructed the Rabbitohs’ round two performance – pin-pointing areas that need improvement for this week’s match in a process that happens weekly.
“We analyse everything that we do at the organisation very closely,” said Madge.
“We’ve been pretty thorough in our reviews of the Manly game and we recognise that we went away from the things we’ve been practicing. Acknowledging that and getting all those things right this week is our highest priority.
insert2.jpg

“Every week is an important week and this is certainly no different. Obviously our defence was very good against the Roosters, but it lacked against Manly, and that can be said for a few aspects of our performance. Friday is an opportunity to rectify that.”
The Rabbitohs and Tigers have played in some memorable matches in recent years, with the latest of their encounters boasting the four Burgess brothers playing together for the very first time in round 25 of the 2013 season – breaking a 103 year old record in the process.
With the selection of former Tigers Lote Tuqiri and Joel Reddy in Michael Maguire’s side for this week, the match will have some added feeling as the two Rabbitohs take on their former club for the very first time since arriving at Redfern.
“I think it definitely adds something extra for those boys,” said Maguire.
“Any time you play against your mates you go out there and you’re giving a little bit extra every time you get a hold of someone.
“Lote and Joel are very much a part of our fabric now at Souths. Joel gets his first opportunity this week in the centres and he’s worked very hard to get that.”
Reddy will partner brother-in-law Bryson Goodwin in the Rabbitohs’ centres this week for the first time – a selection that Maguire feels adds an extra dimension to the family feel at the Rabbitohs.
“Both Bryson and Joel’s family’s will be very proud I’m sure, and it adds to that feel we have at this Club,” said Madge.
“As a team we get a kick out of seeing that sort of connection happen – we saw that last year against the Tigers with the Burgess boys playing all together for the first time.
“We enjoy the fact that we have those close relationships among our playing group, and it really makes us feel even more connected as a team.”
The South Sydney mentor urged Members and supporters to take advantage of this week’s reciprocal rights as well as free rail transport to throw your support behind the boys.
“We’ve said it before – having our Members there to support us goes a long way to getting the win, so we can’t wait to see what our Members have in store for us. We’ll be looking to produce for them.”

TIGERS V RABBITOHS
The Tigers are expected to be 1–17 with last year’s top tryscorer Tim Simona returning from off-season shoulder surgery and Liam Fulton (concussion) expected to play. The Rabbitohs have named Joel Reddy to make his debut against his former club.

UPDATE 12.30pm AEDT: Chris McQueen and Dylan Walker (both ankle) are expected to be ruled out for the Rabbitohs. John Sutton will play five-eighth in place of Walker, with Kyle Turner and Nathaniel Neale added to the bench. Greg Inglis hasn’t trained this week due to an ankle injury, but will play.
