They aren’t deadwood, every squad needs players like them, the key is not to pay them top 13 money, which I doubt we are considering who we have purchased / resigned over the last 12 months......

look at the storm they have a Max king and Tom Eisenhuth in their top 19 this week.....etc etc etc etc
ANYONE WHO ISNT STARTING IS DEADWOOD!!!!!!

Which I kinda agree with in the grand scheme of winning a GF. But that doesn’t mean they are without their uses

Anyone who isn't a fat origin player is deadwood.

Josh Papalii is the only player in the NRL worth any money

Oh blow it out your a-hole Pou.

The Rooters had a sabbatical following Pearce and JMH issues plus others.

They haven't missed a beat since they got their shit together. They just keep signing the best young talent without having a nursery to worry about. They just signed the Walker kid, another standout junior that everyone else was interested in. Amazing how when you don't have to worry about looking after your own young talent and spending around a million dollars a year looking after it, how you can just cherry pick at will.

Then you add that you have a billionaire\bankers board and the opportunities that that can provide and the best coach everybody wants to be coached by, how can you not be top 4 every year and in Grand Finals almost every year.

This is why the Roosters have never been for a system where each club is given an NSW area to look after as a nursery. Why would they want to. They are just laughing at all the development clubs that spend all there money, time and effort looking after and caring about their backyard nurseries. Yeah sure you can get lucky and have a few great kids come through all at once and have a great little period of success, but in the long run, poaching the best talent Australia wide is where its at.

And yes Pou, I know every club can do the same and does get kids from everywhere, but we and all the other development clubs primarily focus on our own juniors and look to supplement the junior roster with outside talent. Whereas like I said, the Roosters don't have to worry about funding their own nursery, which frees them to go wild on the best young talent and out bid most times other clubs for the most talented of all the juniors.

As much as it would pain me, I think that we should tell V'landys, that we don't want to fund our juniors anymore and unless something is done about 1. poaching our juniors when they are about to be ready for NRL and 2. teams like the Roosters are forced to take an area in NSW to look after and plough millions into developing. It is a huge disadvantage to us and massive advantage to the Roosters the way the setup is now.

This has been proposed a few times before, but gotten no traction due to weak leadership at the top and fearing Politis, but now that we have V'landys in charge, intimidation isn't going to be a factor and something positive might get done. I know Penrith, Canberra and other development clubs would be on board as well since they have previously been the ones that have put up a stink about it.
Well written Pou and spot on. You can also add Souths as a team without juniors, they're looked after by Souths Juniors. Yes teams like Parra, Penrith, etc spend millions and get no compensation for developing juniors that other teams 'steal'. I've said a few times that we'd probably be better cherry picking juniors from other teams rather than trying to develop our own. It'd certainly cost us much less, and in post-COVID times, this may become the norm. On a value for talent basis we've certainly wasted millions for very little return so far.

Aren't we now doing exactly what the Roosters are doing? We have f**k all local juniors in our top 17. And we are going great guns. I don't give a shit what junior club they played for. As long as they are loving playing for the blue and gold right now.

yep, in saying that 9 players (Paulo, Mahoney, Matterson, Drown, Sivo, Peni, OK, MK and Stone) from our top 17 this week either debuted or played 20’s with us. That’s what developing players is all about in the NRL, not how many juniors you have.

And another 3 weren’t exactly established NRL players on the fringe of rep selection (Nrown, Gutho and Lane) when they joined us.

Of our top 17 the following 7 players played in our junior rep teams:

Drown (NZ)
Moses
Paulo
Mahoney (Qld)
Matterson
Stone (Wests)
Terepo

About half poached from elsewhere, so we benefit from both methods of 'development'.

We can be happy with the jnrs we've kept compared to let go. It's not perfect but hey look at the Tigers debacle. You can name a team of stars of whom they've let walk out.

The salary cap stops teams being able to keep all their best players, whether local juniors or otherwise.

False

Mahoney,Jnr Paulo,DBrown,Matterson,Terepo,Kafusi,Stone played juniors for the club. I dont care if they come from another Jnr club. They played jnrs at Parra in their under 20s comp. That is 7 of our top 17.
While Nikauore and Sivo didn't play juniors they where budget signings who the Eels developed or atleast took a chance on.

You could argue that Gutherson and even N.Brown where low budget signings at the time.

It's not false, though?

Joseph Manu, Jake Friend, Boyd Cordner, Victor Radley, Sam Verrills, Isaac Liu, and Nat Butcher all played NYC or SG Ball for the Roosters. That's 7 of their top 17 this week, plus Mitch Aubusson and Lachlan Lam in the 21.

Lindsay Collins, Daniel Tupou, and Siosiua Taukeiaho would count as budget signings they took a chance on.

So kind of exactly like the Roosters.

I'd say the Roosters' 'development' is similar to ours:

Manu
Friend
Cordner
Radley
Verrills
Liu
Butcher
Collins

All played for the Roosters rep teams, though only Radley is a local. On top of that Tupou made his debut with the club, and would've been cheap. Flanagan had played f**k all first grade and wouldn't have cost much either. He left because he had Townsend, Johnson and Moylan in front of him. Taukeiaho and JWH had both played very little first grade when the Roosters poached them as well.

These guys were established first graders when joining the Chooks:

Tedesco
Morris
Morris
Keary
Crichton

That's comparable to our cohort:

Ferguson
Jennings
Blake
Moses (a returning junior)
RCG
Evans
