NRL | Knights coach Nathan Brown denies the club didn't go hard enough to retain Dane Gagai
Nathan Brown regards former Knight Dane Gagai as one of his side’s biggest threats at McDonald Jones Stadium on Friday night.
But the Knights coach denies the club didn’t go hard enough to re-sign him last season before he jumped ship to the Rabbitohs, suggesting Gagai left because the Knights’ lack of success had worn him down.
While the Kangaroos winger has maintained since he left Newcastle he joined South Sydney because he sensed he was no longer a priority signing at the Knights, Brown believes he was just fed up with losing.
“He was at the stage of his career where he just wanted to win some games,” Brown told the
Newcastle Herald.
“He was probably the last player still here who had gone through the toughest times at the Knights. He went through all the Tinkler stuff and the Alex McKinnon injury and the aftermath of all that.
“Then it was the three wooden spoon seasons. It just wore him down but more importantly at the time, he probably couldn’t see it changing here in the short term.”
Brown says he clearly remembers sitting down with Gagai only a matter of days before he made the decision to joins Souths for a heart-to-heart.
“He was asking me who are we going to sign and at the time, I was having to tell him no-one because at that stage, no-one was coming,” he said.
“All I could tell him was Matt Scott’s not coming and Jack Bird’s going to Brisbane and as we sit here, we haven’t got anyone and I can’t promise you anything.
“Then he asked about how long it was going to take the younger guys to develop and I couldn’t give him a definitive answer other than to say some would develop quicker than others.
“I wasn’t going to lie to him and make promises I couldn’t necessarily keep.”
Brown says he has enormous respect for Gagai and his ability is still hopeful he may return to the Knights at some stage in the future.
“Look at the end of the day, we made a very good offer for Gags but the offer from Souths was obviously very strong and the opportunity to play with Greg Inglis was obviously a real big attraction for him as well,” Brown said.
“But deep down in my heart, I believe Gags would have accepted our offer and would still be here if Jack Bird had committed at the time or he’d known about Mitchell Pearce and a few of our other recruits that we eventually attracted.
“He certainly gave it everything while he was here and I’ve got no doubts will be really welcomed by the home fans on Friday night.
“I still believe one day, you never know, he may come come back.”
